Been going for years, Too bad no more Monrovia address, but same old great product and service! Will continue to "Get My Grinder On!"

If I could rate 1,000,000 stars, I would. I lived in Monrovia and never tried their shop. They moved to Duarte, I moved to Duarte so now I had to. I tried their pastrami sandwich first. As a die hard, "if I want a sandwich, I'll make it at home" aficionado, I was skeptical. However, after the first bite I was taken aback. How can a sandwich be this good? This might be witchcraft. Then my MIL decides to try the BOGO deal and asks me what I want. I told her grab me a turkey one...still skeptical. (Mind you, they messed up her order but the crew made sure to fix it and she said they went above and beyond). I bite into the turkey sando and there's only one way to describe it. You know that episode of SpongeBob where he makes the krabby patty and tucks in the pickles under the cheese so softly? That's what it's like to bite into a sandwich from Genes Grinders! Whoever is making them is spongebob. You can taste the quality and love. The meat, veggies and bread taste soooo fresh and delicious. I have recommended this place to everyone. I cannot wait to try another flavor (I see you tuna) next! This sandwich will change your life. Thank me later. read more

I've been coming here for at least 10 years now. Every time I come in the service is great. Their sandwiches are amazing, and their daily specials are even better. The ambiance always feels homey and friendly. Love the vibe of this spot. Seems like a local favorite. Seen trash men, cops, road workers, nurses, and in general the whole community stop in. I went with a small salami with mayo and it was choice. Plenty of meat and the bread was great. I heard a lot of people ordering well done fries so I feel like I gotta try them next time. Plenty of parking and street parking. There's a nice little patio with a service window if you don't feel like going inside. Gene's Grinders has been in business for many years and I can see why. Their sandwiches, cold and hot, are delicious. They offer two sizes for their sandwiches, but the difference is like night and day. Just go with the large; you can thank me later. This establishment is tucked just off Old Town Monrovia on Myrtle Ave. You are able to go inside, order and dine, or order from the outside. I only interacted with one staff member and she was pleasant. Inside was clean, with some tables, chairs, and memorabilia. I ordered their large meatball sandwich and it did not disappoint. The sauce and meatballs were savory and bread was soft and chewy. Overall, a positive experience and will continue eat here. read more

Great sandwiches made with quality ingredients! So far my husband and I have tried the pastrami, roast beef and turkey, Gene's special, and roast beef dip--everything was delicious and solid! We enjoyed the pastrami sandwich the most, the pastrami was sliced very thin and had good flavor. Apparently their chicken sandwich is also very popular, but it's only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays according to their menu. We'll have to come back and try that someday. Service is always friendly and quick! They also provide free peperoncini and banana peppers to go with your sandwiches. The restaurant itself isn't big, but they do have a few tables in the outdoor patio. read more

It took me a while to discover Gene's Grinders, because they're a few blocks away from the now bustling Old Town Monrovia, and like many others that walk on Myrtle, we usually pop in to an eatery during a stroll. Thanks to social media marketing and the power of a tempting photo, it led me here. First visit, I placed an order for 2 sandwiches on my phone while en route to cut down on the waiting time. I completed the order right when we pulled up to the parking lot (yea, took me a while) and when I walked in 2 minutes later, my sandwiches were ready. What?? "Are you sure those are mine?" I asked. They were and I left plenty happy. I always order online and it's usually ready within minutes. You can customize how you like it, or choose add-ons. Now I've never been there during peak lunch hours so can't speak for those wait times. The sandwiches are delicious. They may not have bursting flavors like a few other places but Gene does it right in their own way. They're huge, tastes fresh and prepared with a lot of thought. Example: See my photo of the roast beef. The veggies are in the middle, between layers of beef. They never make contact with the bread so even after a 1/2 hour, the bread is still soft and not soggy. The meatball sandwich has just the right amount of sauce so it's not dry, yet the bread is still intact even after being wrapped tightly in double paper. These little details make eating their sandwiches much more enjoyable then others where I end up with soggy buns falling apart making a big mess. The size is misleading to me. I ordered 12" sandwiches and these seem bigger. One sandwich can easily be 2 meals for me. I've had their meatballs a few times, the roast beef and the cold cut sandwiches, and they all satisfy me without making feel weighed down full of grease. Check out Gene's for some great sandwiches, great service from great people. They do have a few tables inside to sit, or take it to go and have a picnic at the Library Park a few minutes away. read more

I came here on a Saturday around 3pm. I didn't know what to expect as it was my first time here. I ordered 2 large sandwiches (1 meatball and 1 Gene's Cold Sandwich Special). Both sandwiches came inside a bag that seemed to weigh 10 lbs. I was impressed by the portions and the quality after starting my first bites of the meatball sandwich. After eating just one half, i was already full. I realized i had enough for days to come. The cold sandwich was amazing as well. The customer service was top notch. The employees were really nice and friendly. This has now become my favorite sandwhich/grinder place. My only gripe would be that they close at 4pm. This means i could only come here in weekends due to working in Anaheim. This place would make so much more if it were open until 8pm or so. I suppose they have their reasons for not staying open until that time. I will definitely be returning and cannot wait to try the other grinders. read more

I was finally able to try Gene's Grinders today, 12/27/2025, the sandwich shop everyone's been talking about. I saw numerous posts on Facebook about their BOGO promo. After receiving an email yesterday I made my way over to Gene's before the deal "melts away" as the email stated. After careful selection of the 2 sandwiches my family wanted to try, I drove over to Gene's to place my order. To my surprise, I was told the promo had ended 4 days ago. The gentleman at the counter asked to see the email and he agreed it did not state an end date for the promo. He said he would tell the "guy" of this error. Unfortunately he did not offer us anything to compensate us for this mistake. I understand he may not be authorized to do anything but it just left us with a less than stellar impression of this establishment. A very poor first impression. I even overheard the customer after me inquire about the promo as well. And he wasn't very happy about his denial too. I must say, however, we did enjoy our sandwich, a hot pastrami grinder, But not entirely sure whether or not we will return. This is the second time ordering sandwiches here and while the portions are very generous they simply do not use enough sauce and cheese. Ordered the meatball and Italian sausage sandwiches but both lacked sauce and were very dry. Historically, when I have ordered this sandwich at other places you can bite into it and have cheese and sauce oozing around it. For me, the balance between meat and sauce and cheese is off. read more

HOLY SMOKES, their subs here are HUGE! Big enough for you to split it into 2 meals, or you can share with someone! Service is great, the staff is very friendly here! Quick service and a nice outdoor dining area. I tried the Pastrami grinder: I added extra pickles and onions! It was a really delicious sub! I would say it was slightly dry but dry as in it needed like a sauce or dip, but not like the pastrami was like overcooked or dried out dry. I tried Gene's Grinders in Monrovia for the first time on 07/24/2024 for pick-up at Lunchtime. I ordered one of the Pastrami Dip's (Small) and one of the Meatball Special's (Small). I actually at the Pastrami Dip. It was absolutely delicious. Full of flavor, full of meat and toppings. The price is competitive with other sandwich shops and probably actually better, because they actually put a lot into each sandwich. The bread is super fresh as well. I also had a tiny bite of the Meatball Special and that was awesome as well. I will definitely return again to Gene's. read more

my son had the kielbasa and I had the pastrami. If you've ever ate at the hat World famous pastrami and thought that was good you are definitely missing out. Wow! I've finally tried this place after knowing about it for more than a decade. I tried the large pastrami and it was delicious. Loaded with meat , and not too salty.
