This elegant statue of Sir William Nott (1782-1845) was sculpted by Carmarthen born Edward Davis (1813-78) and erected in 1851. It has Grade II Listed status and stands on a silver granite pedestal . Apparently it was made using bronze from a captured cannon from the Battle of Maharajpur and giifted by the East India Company.
Nott, arguably Carmarthen's most famous soldier, was actually born near Neath and is chiefly known for his work in the Afghan campaign in the 19th century. After his military career in India and Afghanistan he retired to Carmarthen.
The statue stands near Carmarthen Castle in what is now called Nott Square at the top of one of the pedestrianised streets. read more
