2 stars for ambiance and nice staff. Regarding the food my husband stated not sure where the 2nd star would come from. Spent $92 for 2 people. We ordered cheese curds, red snapper and New York strip. No alcohol. So the curds were ok weird texture. The snapper was way over seasoned, half cooked and had a fair share of bones. The New York strip was inedible. It had gristle running lengthwise through the center with the fat on the side. It was such a narrow slice that my husband finally gave up trying to cut around it halfway through. The sides were not much better limp asparagus and overly salted fries that were put in the steak juices. lol mushrooms and onion side were canned mushrooms. Bummed bc menu looked great. We love trying new places and burgers might be good but we have other places to get those. Probably won't be back. read more

This place has been around forever and gotten a facelift. You can eat on the hotel restaurant side for a white tablecloth experience, or sit on the GD Bar side for a classic pub setting; either way you will get the same amazing food and drinks and friendliness! We always sit on the pub side at the bar. We had some delicious beers (Masters Local Dayton Coffee Porter and 3 Floyd's Zombie Killer). For dinner we got the Lamb Burger that is locally sourced lamb from Taylor farm, with the feta and peppers mixed into the meat, topped with a fried green tomato. I got the special which was Duck Amaretto; crispy duck breast cooked medium, with apricots, almonds, asparagus and mashed potatoes. It was very good! read more

It had a updated atmosphere but still had that old west saloon feel. The bar looked like it was right out of an old cowboy movie. Service was a bit slow, refills are my pet peeve, should not ask, just keep my glass full. The food was good not great. The fish looked like it was frozen but tasted fresh. My GF ordered her steak med well. It came out at the end temp of med rare. It was ok because that's how I eat it so we switched meals. I would have given 4 stars if service would have been better. Really enjoyed this historical restaurant. Food was great , service was outstanding and attentive. They have pub dining as well as a separate dining room and outdoor seating. We ate in the pub which was quaint with a lot of history. Opened in 1928 and had much of the original wood work. Bathrooms were clean and Covid precautions were very good. We came in from out of town and really liked it. You know us California folk can be a tad picky at times but we loved General Denver. The service was great and we really enjoyed our interaction with our waiter. The only bummer was that waiters share all the tables from what it seems like so you may have one really friendly person taking your order and than another person that's just okay bringing your food. So if one of your waiters sucks you'll still feel obligated to tip very well because you don't want to screw another person. Now let's talk food: The food was really good. As a vegetarian I opted to order the Caprese Grilled cheese and an order or pub fries. Apparently the pub fries come with bacon though (it was not advertised on the menu). Luckily, my cousin who is a regular saved me from what would have been a huge "meaty" disappointment! My husband ordered steak with the mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes appeared homemade and were amazing. My only complaint here was that he ordered his steak medium rare and it came out VERY rare. When we mentioned it to the waiter they simply threw the same steak back on the grill and didn't comp the mess up. Taste wise however, there are no complaints here. We really enjoyed the anti pasto late and the fried green tomatoes. The general vibe here is nice and comfy and I could definitely see myself come back here again should we be back in Ohio. I ordered the chickpea burger off the special menu. The waiter was very helpful and verified that the burger was vegan for me. The unique combination of chickpeas and guacamole on toast was so delicious! The consistency was more of a spread or salad than a burger but the flavor was still fantastic. I would definitely get this again. I also ordered the spinach salad without bacon. I love the vinaigrette on the salad, a little tangy, not too sweet. Management said because they are a small business they did not need to honor it. Federal law states they are required to honor a gift certificate for five (5) years even if certificate is paper. My wife and I try to seek out unusual (non-chain) places to stay while traveling, and we couldn't resist booking a room in this hotel after reading about it's history. The hotel (built in 1928) has an amazing presence in this small town, and looks inviting from the outside. It's even cooler inside - an old fashioned register where your reservation is written in ink, a stuffed moose head over the check-in desk and an original elevator to reach the upper floors, manned by the hotel staff... There is a busy little pub off of the main entrance, but more about that later. We were greeted like we were friends and ushered to a second floor room by our host. There was a very comfortable lounge area on the second floor balcony, with seating and tables. It is stocked with current magazines, coffee and snacks. The room was small but comfortable, and was decorated with retro furniture. The bath had luxury towels and products. There was a television in the room, but no phone (who cares-we all bring our own now). The pub/restaurant features dinners with local farm products, steak, fish and great burgers. My wife and I had fantastic lamb burgers with local lamb, feta, roasted red peppers,arugula, remoulade, fresh mozzarella an fried green tomatoes. Every dish that came out of the kitchen looked great. Every member of the staff that we met was friendly, professional and attentive. And we were treated to a cooked-to-order breakfast in the morning. I would highly receommend the General Denver as THE place to stay and eat at if you end up anywhere near Wilmington, Ohio. read more

If anything, the food got better here. This is more than a pub, it is a cross between grandma's kitchen and a power breakfast, lunch, or dinner spot. The Tuesday meatloaf special was perfect: includIng gravy & homemade potatos & green beans. They also have asparagus, broccoli & fried freen tomatoes on the menu. So was the gingerbread cake, which comes with ice cream or cool whip, which I like. Not to ignore more urban tastes, they have a diverse menu. Crowd is very friendly to all. Had a business trip in Wilmington, OH. Before and during the trip I received several recommendations to visit General Denver. My first meal was so enjoyable that I went back the next day! And if my schedule would have been open I would have gone back again! Wilmington is small community of about 13 - 15 thousand residents. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown. It is a beautiful old hotel (haunted, so I was told). On the first floor is the restaurant/bar with an outdoor terrace as well as a beautiful reception area. It was quick to see the wonderful sense of community within the restaurant. Almost everyone new someone else that evening and judging from the interaction with the wait staff, most all were regulars. (If I lived in or traveled frequently to Wilmington I would be a regular too!). As for the food ... delicious. I had the same meal at both visits: lamb burger with sweet potato fries. I went to the Denver hotel based on reviews. Thankfully I was alone so was seated right away at the bar but walked past many people waiting to be seated. Matt the bartender was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the lasagna special with a house salad with tomato vinaigrette. The flavor was sweet but balanced. Could have used a little kick for me but was good. The lasagna was a large portion. The meat was plentiful. The spices were warm but pleasant. We stayed at the General Denver over the weekend. The Hotel is very unique as all the rooms are different. We had a very nice quiet room with comfortable King bed. We had dinner at the Hotel restaurant and it was very good. My wife had the homemade bean and ham soup and said it was the best she has ever had!! I had the tilapia and it was also very good. We had breakfast each morning downstairs that was included in the room rate and everything we had was also very good. Everyone at the Hotel and restaurant were very friendly and eager to cater to your needs. Tracy the General Manager is GREAT!! Very cool old historic building. I've eaten here twice both for work lunch meetings. Definitely a good spot to have a work lunch meeting if you are in the Wilmington area. The first time I got the club sandwich it was really good. Just your standard club sandwich but the second time I got the homemade lasagna and a side salad with the homemade sweet tomato vinaigrette dressing. Wow both of those were very very tasty. Every time I go and I get excited to hear about the specials because everything looks so delicious. I definitely will be dining here more often. Well, this is about as good as it's gets in a small town in Ohio. The wine list is decent and they have a few rotating microbrews on tap. It's a great place to meet up with friends for a drink, although they close fairly early by city standards. The food is great! I've had brunch and dessert on separate occasions and both were fantastic. Their menu has all of the basics (steak, chicken, bacon and eggs, burgers, etc) depending on the time of day and almost everyone can find something to eat. The food isn't exactly inventive or over-the-top flavorful, which I prefer, but which I also recognize wouldn't be a great fit for the town. I can recommend stopping by if you happen to be in town, especially because your options are limited. We made dinner reservations the day before for 6 pm. They were very accomadating when I called about two hours before our dinner reservation to reschedule for 6:30 pm. The wait time on the food took about 30-35 minutes, which was a little long, but to be expected on a Friday. I ordered the cajun chicken pasta, which came with garlic bread and a house salad. My husband and mom ordered the fish fry with coleslaw and fries. My dad and sister ordered salads.
