We like this restaurant a lot and they recently just changed their menu! This was the right choice for this restaurant. Much better options. Also, our server Sarah did an incredible job and went over and beyond for us! Highly recommend asking for her! read more

The cheeseburger was perfect - The bun was fresh and properly toasted - The veggies were crisp. Nice that the leaf lettuce was not placed directly on the hot patty - The tomato was okay; not yet tomato season, so I assume that this was greenhouse grown - The beef was seared on a flattop, perfectly seasoned and had excellent beefy flavor. The loaded baked potato was also excellent. Kasey was our server. She was appropriately attentive, without being obsequious. Will I return? Yes. read more

Came here for a rehearsal dinner... had the bone in porch chop which was a little over cooked but had great flavor and the chop sauce that came on top was mouthwatering. The sweet pot fries are definitely some of the best I've had. The fried green tomatoes were scrumptious with the house made ranch. Also had the cheese curds which were also amazing!! Would definitely come back if in the area again!! read more

This is a review of their claim of being handicap accessible with an elevator. I have to be down in September for a high school reunion. I remember growing up this place was closed and when it reopened so I wanted to finally stay there. So I booked a Queen room with a bathtub on Expedia letting them know that I sometimes need a wheelchair like they explained on their listing because of clearing the hallway may be needed. The next day I got a message saying that their elevator has to be operated by staff and isn't available all the time. Guests are expected to use the stairs. They also had to put me on the 4th floor and I can't do stairs because of my heart. I called them the next day but the hotel was closed until 11 am! When I reached someone after 11, I was told they work in grill and they will have the hotel manager call me back. Never did. ADA requirements clearly have said for decades that if you work on a public building, it must be handicap accessible. I am glad I didn't book for the next day or I could have been in trouble. They need to be truthful and clear. But they were not. read more

Atmosphere was very welcoming and the service was great! My chicken sandwich was prepared perfectly. Would definitely recommend!

I was in Wilmington, Ohio for a tour performance, and after our sound check, the college took us to dinner at the General Denver--a beautiful restaurant attached to the hotel where we were staying. The hotel and restaurant both had a rustic, classic feel with a lot of wood accents, giving it a homely and welcoming vibe. One cool feature of the hotel is the old crank elevator they still use! We were greeted by a kind and enthusiastic hostess and seated quickly. Since we were on a time crunch, it became clear the restaurant usually caters to guests who like to take their time. After receiving our drinks, we had to flag down the waitress to place our orders, as she had disappeared for quite a while. As a big fan of steak, especially ribeye, I couldn't resist ordering it when I saw it on the menu. I ordered the ribeye medium-well, along with a baked potato and broccoli, and paired it with an old-fashioned. The sides were great--the broccoli was perfectly seasoned and buttery, and the baked potato was spot-on. Unfortunately, I found the steak itself to be very tough. I was warned by a friend dining with us, who had tried it before, but I wanted to form my own opinion. While I managed to finish most of it, I have to admit the interior was quite chewy, though the more tender outer parts were good. That being said, I do live in Chicago, where I regularly make my own steaks, so I may be a bit biased. Judging based on the area, though, if you're looking for a nice date spot, a good drink, and a decent meal, General Denver might just be what you're looking for. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5. read more

My wife and I travel often so many of my YELP reviews are for places quite far from our home state, Ohio. A friend who knows that I like to find good little restaurants, many off them beaten path, told me about the restaurant at the General Denver Hotel in Wilmington, OH. We decided to take the short drive from Cincinnati to Wilmington to check it out. This is the kind of place I would consider a HIDDEN GEM. I love that the restaurant is located in an old hotel, in small town. We sat in the bar area ( I think there must be a larger room also). Our waitress was terrific. We weren't finished with our original diet Pepsis when she delivered new drinks. Now the food. It was delicious. We ordered Clam Chowder and we each had a Lamb Burger with home made Saratoga Chips. The Lamb Burgers were out of this world. This is a great little getaway so we will be back! read more

We've been by this place dozens of times on our way to other places and always thought it would be worth a try. It's very good! It's an older style restaurant with lots of dark wood classically finished. The outside area is huge and about 1/2 of it is covered. I had the Main Street salad. Smoked Turkey, Romain lettuce, blue cheese, red onion, crispy bacon crumbles, and I had honey mustard dressing on the side. Fresh, delicious salad! My son had Caesar salad with Mollys stuffed chicken. The salad was just ok, nothing wrong but nothing special either. The chicken was very well put together and tasted great, albeit a bit small. (That's ok by us.) We both said we would like to stop by and try other things. read more

My partner and I visited here on a Friday evening for dinner. We thought we would need a reservation, but we were wrong. The place was not super packed, but it was nice to know that we would seated promptly upon arrival. There's two areas, an inside restaurant and an outside bar area with more tables. We were sat at the outdoor tables, which I was not a fan of but it was not a deal breaker for the experience. But given the occasion I would've preferred to have been sat at a more proper table (it was Valentine's Day). Drinks took a while to come to us, and at first they got my order wrong. They comped it in the end, so all was well. For my dish I got a simple salad, and then the pork chop with sweet potato fries. The salad was very fresh and hit the spot before my meal. The pork chop was fantastic and cheap for its quality. My partner also really enjoyed his steak for the price. All in all, this place is good for any occasion: meeting friends for drinks, a casual dinner out, or a celebration dinner. There were people of all attire there and enjoying themselves. We will be back for more. read more

Came to town, just for the night and found this place on Yelp. Make sure to get reservations. Restaurant on the main street of downtown, inside and outside seating, . Food; 12oz Ribeye, which was pretty good. Cooked to order. The sides were fresh and crisp. Server; My bill says her name was Jesika, but don't think that was it. But our server was the best. read more

Haven't eaten here in awhile so we gave it a go. The cauliflower wings were just IQF breaded cauliflower with a side of generic hot sauce. Fried green tomatoes were very brown. Not a lot of the tang associated with green tomatoes. I got the standard Cajun Bleu Cheese burger (medium) and the husband got the Bourbon BBQ Chicken sandwich. Burger was med-well and had absolutely no seasoning at all. Nothing Cajun about it, not even salt. Chicken was very dry and overcooked. Fries were the same ones I buy at Kroger and throw in the air fryer. For a $72 bill pre-tip, with nothing made in house, it will take a new menu/kitchen crew to get us back in there. Gave it a 2 star only because of the historic nature of the building. read more

awful. Terrible service. Overcooked food. And hour wait for one drink. No thanks. No I'm sorry! Just a terrible night

As a local company we try to support our local community. We had international guest visiting and thought a nice dinner at the local historical General Denver would be nice. Unfortunately, the experience was not. The waitress was great on checking in with us and providing drinks, receiving our dinners took over an hour and out of 12 dinners, they were either over cooked, under cooked, or cold. On top of that they had someone else other than our waitress try to bring out the meals and had everyone's order mixed up. Beautiful facility however the service does not meet expectations. read more

They were able to do a reservation for a table of 15, which was awesome. However, the server we had seemed over it as soon as we sat down. When I had just gotten there and taken a seat, I was asked what I wanted to drink, but I had not looked at the menu yet, so I said water to start. Unfortunately, the server had not come around for drinks again until someone else in our party noted that we didn't have drink orders in. I ordered the 6 oz ribeye and added shrimp. I really enjoyed my entree. I thought it was quite good. There were a lot of sides to choose from too, so that helps. I'd consider coming back here. The drinks and food were good and they were able to accommodate a large group. read more

It took approx 45 min to get our entrees for 3 people. One of them came out hot and fresh, the salmon came out near room temp, and the club came out completely room temp and the bread then was hard. The fries that came with our items were also room temp. Our waitress didn't visit our table that often to refill our drinks, we had to wave her down most of the time. The flavor of the food seemed really good but the quality otherwise was lack luster. Willing to give it one more try. read more

I will never go to this restaurant again, we had a bad experience, it was taken care of by the manager after multiple calls. Staff member was rude who answered the phone but that was just one of the issues. Will not go back, extremely disappointing. read more

I had heard great things about this restaurant and they have an extensive menu. My cocktail recommended by the server was Black Cherry Bourbon and outstanding!! After that things kind of fell apart. I ordered a filet mignon with a baked potato and Caesar salad as sides. I ordered the baked potato plain as I don't eat sour cream and was informed that they served only margarine, not butter. My steak was served first...quickly followed by my salad that tasted like it had been sitting under a warmer for a bit. Not sure what the filet was, but it was full of gristle and overseasoned with garlic and maybe margarine??? Fortunately, the manager was gracious enough to remove the entree from my bill... read more

Excellent food and service! The homemade potato chips called "Saratoga Chips" are delicious--get them instead of fries and try dipping them into the BBQ sauce they bring with them. Had a mushroom and Swiss burger. Husband has the fish and chips. The fish was huge-covered most of the plate. Came with fries and slaw. We arrived at 5pm on Friday and just managed to get a table in the bar area near the lobby, but the place quickly filled up! The bar made a good drink called the Denver Cosmopolitan, served a little slushy in a martini glass. Everything was delicious and I highly recommend you have dinner here! read more

When it comes to the general Denver burger it was ordered medium. It was more juice and grease than anything. A good greasy burger is loved more than anything but this was just too much along with all the meat juice coming out. The homemade Saratoga chips were absolutely wonderful. The special of tilapia was very fishy and I am one that absolutely enjoys eating tilapia. The cucumber and pico cream sauce on top of it was absolutely delicious and I would most definitely eat that again. the fries also very good, a little too much cracked black pepper on it for me but some people like that. The asparagus was definitely on point and delicious. We also had the spinach artichoke dip with the homemade chips and we really enjoyed that. Over all it was a nice restaurant and we had a nice time. Our waitress was so sweet and wasn't over bearing. Making sure that our drinks were always full and checking in on how we were doing. The atmosphere in this establishment during lunch was laid back and very friendly. We decided to sit in the tavern area which was very nice. read more

6/13/23 This used to be one of my fave places to eat. The outdoor area is really nice and a great place for a drink (as well as the indoor front bar. Prices are fair for the location. Service used to be fantastic and meals were hot on arrival, but I've been disappointed the last 3x eating there. Steak over cooked, other meal was not hot when it arrived late, and a never-changing so-so menu. It seems that the "happy" has been zapped out of the place. Maybe I'll give it another try the next time I'm in the area but for the summer it's a no-go. read more

Had high hopes for this place as my parents use to go there years ago. Me and my other half drooled over the menu for months and went in pretty much knowing what we wanted. Started out with the crab cake appetizer. It was luke warm but not horrible. If you have a party of more than 2 ppl...this will not suffice. Comes with 2 crab cakes about a half size of your palm. Not worth 14.00. But okay. We split the fried green tomato BLT sandwich and the lamb burger. Nothing to write home about. The lamb burger may have tasted better without the fried green tomato but regardless, mediocre at best. I took a bite of each sandwich and shoved my plate to my boyfriend. He's a foodie and ate it all but he wasn't impressed either. Came with Saratoga chips and we upgraded to the tavern fries. The chips and fries were awesome! That's about all I can say. Our male waiter was wonderful and kind. Tipped him decent for his service. All in all, my 55.00 coulda been used more wisely. Not saying I'd never go back, maybe we just didn't order the best of the menu. Portions were ehhh....my boyfriend ate both of our meals (not a big dude) and went outta there wanting desert. read more

Amazing that the restaurant is able to remain opened? Still, either they're short staffed or they just can't keep up with basic demands of prior to the pandemic popularity? What a shame. We've loved coming here because of the SOQHA WEC horse shows. However, the food was still decent but gaining in expense like many. We felt somewhat ignored. Also, I don't mind giving a nice gratuity, but I've got to have the service first. read more

We will not return. read more

We used to love this place and would come weekly if not several times a week. Now we wait forever for food, have burnt food (so badly you can even cut into it), and the management does not care to fix the issue. It unfortunately reflects on servers, which I do not think is fair as they aren't cooking. We were regulars for 2 years and unfortunately now will not be back as the last 3 times we have waited an hour or more from the time we sat until receiving food, had cold fries and /or severely burnt food. We aren't usually very picky as we have family who owns their own business and are pretty understanding. This is such a bummer to us as one of the only sit down places near us. read more

What a gem!! We stopped for dinner as we were passing through town and realized it's not just a wonderful restaurant, but historic hotel. After a tour from Cassandra, we learned the hotel was built in 1928 and is just beautiful! It has the oldest elevator in Ohio, (see pics), beautiful rooms, a warm and welcoming lobby, and an excellent restaurant. The restaurant's menu provided lots of options (I had a salmon dinner that was tender and flavorful, and my husband had a fried chicken dinner with green beans and Yukon gold potatoes -- the chicken was moist and flavorful!). our server Sheryl, was warm, funny, knowledgeable about the food, feature drinks and menu, and had a great sense of humor! Loved her We will plan a weekend in Wilmington, stay at General Denver hotel and restaurant, catch live entertainment on General's back bar and outdoor patio and plan to attend a movie or performance at the Murphy Theatre. A must visit!! read more

Since I enjoy historical establishments, my son, and I stopped in here after visiting Tincap cider. Walked in and was very impressed with the decor. A little bit of modern mixed in with the historical aspect of the building. We went straight to the bar area. Noticed a large patio outside, but we decided to stay and sit at the bar. Large bourbon selection, as well as other cocktails. We tried a few craft beers. They carry a nice variety of local craft brewery selections. We had the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer. It was average. I would like to come back here and try a Main course at some point, but we were just there to have a few drinks. The vibe itself is very relaxing. Nice atmosphere. The bartender was nice and very knowledgeable on the beer and cocktail selections. Parking is pretty limited. We parked across the street in a small parking lot so you may have trouble finding parking on the weekends. We will definitely give this another try when in Wilmington. read more

The General Denver Hotel (GD) is a great location to sit back and relax. The GD restaurant provides great food at a very reasonable price. I always look forward to eating at the GD when I come in from out of town. The food is wonderful, and I always leave pleased with this aspect of the GD experience. However, the service is very slow. The kitchen could use one more cook on their team. This time around, I was surprised at the lack of hospitality from the front of the house staff. Communication from the head hostess was short and came off as rude. It felt as though she was unwilling to accommodate any matter for a more enjoyable experience. This restaurant would've gotten a five star review had it not been for the front of the house staff. read more
