We had been to store after store in search of the perfect ring and were loosing hope. Each store gave us the same answer "we don't have anything like that" and often times wouldn't even take the time to explain to us what really went into picking the perfect ring and diamond. Luckily one day we were walking around the Ventura Mall when we saw a smiling face standing behind a very clean kiosk. We decided to take a moment to see if just maybe our perfect ring was there. Alex and Chris took the time to ensure we fully understood the answers to all of our questions. We found a band we loved but it had a gem we were not to thrilled about... it was WAYYYY out of our budget. Normally if you tell a vendor something is out of your budget they try to hard sell you or make you feel bad and guilt you into a purchase, but Chris did the exact opposite. I honestly didn't think that we would buy any jewelry from a kiosk in the mall. I would always pass by this when I would be there. It just so happens that my husband and I wanted to sell our wedding jewelry in place of new ones for our vow renewal. We had no plans to buy. Just sell. I couldn't say no! My husband thought it was gorgeous on me. So, I decided to do a trade in and make payments! The other amazing thing was, shira offered to give my husband a rose gold tungsten ring! So we have a matching set. She felt bad that we were not educated by previous jewelers that sold us our previous wedding bands that we paid an arm and a leg for. This is a follow-up to my early-May review of Gems by Joseph and particularly Shira. It is often easy to give a 5-star rating for customer service right after the sale, which I did with Shira and Gems by Joseph only to see that enthusiasm fade when something comes up down the road. Since our purchase of a custom setting, the ring required some minor attention for adjustment and modification of the setting. This did not surprise us since this rebuild of my wife's ring was not an easy undertaking. No other jeweler wanted to take on the task; rather, they took the easier path and wanted us just to buy a new setting (and spend even more money). On each of those occasions when we took the setting back for adjustments, Shira couldn't have been more eager to satisfy us with her "yes we'll take care of that right away" attitude. Too often after a sale, a merchant shows a different attitude than when the sale was made, if there is something that needs attention. Not this jewelry store, their (and Shira's) commitment to making something just perfect continues after the sale. Shira even went out of her way on our last visit when she noticed my white gold wedding band (which we got at Ben Bridge years ago) looked dull - she cleaned it and dipped it in rhodium which brought it back to its new shine and brightness. That was a $100 charge a few years ago at Ben Bridge. At Gems by Joseph, Shira said it was "on her." No charge. This store demonstrates the best in customer service. read more

I bought a new wedding band here and I would say that the owner Joseph will try to hard sell you with a few deals. You can find jewelry online for less than half the price but when it comes down to it, you can look and see the quality that you are buying and not go through all the rigmarole of finding something that doesn't fit or something that looked different in the pictures. We bought my set of rings there a little over 5 years ago and couldn't have been happier. We are from Santa Barbara county, but now live in Orange county. We looked everywhere down here for a set of rings. I didn't want my fiancé to spend a lot of money, and I didn't want anything that would stick out too far. Every place we went to was ridiculous, $2000 for a poor quality 1ct solitaire, or $1000-$1500 for a half carat ring that was just as bad. I decided on looking for a half carat since all of the 1ct rings were way too tall. Every jeweler told us they wouldn't lower the stones because they won't get enough light. I was getting extremely disappointed every time we went out to look, until we stopped in Ventura on our way to visit family. We walked up to the shop and couldn't believe how large the selection was. I was sure they would all be out of our price range, but my fiancé asked to look at one that caught his eye. It was gorgeous and almost exactly what I wanted. The center diamond was set high, but the sales lady said that would be easy to lower. The center stone was larger and expensive, but she said if we could wait a few minutes, she would have someone bring over more diamonds to choose from. We did and we ended up getting a 1ct diamond with a couple tiny flaws for the same price as what a half carat stone in worse condition would have cost where we live. Even now, I get many compliments on my rings. It's an antique style with 18 small diamonds around the center diamond and on the sides of the ring and my wedding band is a small forked ring that hugs the other ring with another 10 diamonds lining the side. The ring is much heavier in gold than any of the other ring I tried on, but very comfortable. Our total cost was a little less than what a 1ct solitaire was where we live. Now, 5 years later, I had the ring cleaned, soldered together, and the white gold redone. I told the girl how much the ring was for the value of it before they took it, and after inspecting it she said she couldn't value it that low and raised the price over $3000. I'm sure we'll be back there again. I recommend them to everyone and always say they're worth the drive from wherever you are. read more
