I don't usually leave one-star reviews, but my experience on February 28 at Mamolo's Fine Pastry inside Gelson's Market was very disappointing. We visit this bakery often for special occasions, but this time the service was unacceptable. The employee, Yvette, was extremely rude and kept interrupting me while I was trying to explain what message I wanted written on the cake. She told me not to "waste her time" and refused to let me finish speaking. This completely ruined what should have been a happy experience. As a regular customer who pays good money, I felt disrespected and unwelcome. Because of this interaction, I will not be returning. I hope the owner addresses this issue so other customers don't have a similar experience. read more

The only thing keeping this Gelsons above 1 stars is their bakery (and even then I am very disappointed that they switched from Victor Bene's). I am absolutely astounded that this Gelsons would have something on the shelf 10 days expired. $7.99 milk bought on 2/22/26- I didn't even think to check the expiration date, because honestly I would assume something costing that much at a high end grocery store would not be expired. Was about to have some the day after I bought it and saw the expiration date- unfortunately I have lost the receipt so cannot return it. The service has been going down hill for years- with the cashiers having side conversations, not giving focus to the customers...I've been checking out while the cashier and bagger discuss their negative opinion about another customer while I'm standing right there. This week I witnessed one of the most disgusting abuses of authority by the Gelson's Tarzana Manager Julio Garcia before 10:00am. My friends and I come on Tuesday mornings to have a delicious pastry and beverage from at the coffee bar (wonderful and friendly staff). For the last few Tuesdays, there has been a homeless woman sitting, by herself, drinking her coffee and eating her goodie. She does not bother anyone. This past Tuesday, however, the manager decided to tell her to leave. But he did so in a loud, cruel and angry voice, without treating this woman with respect or dignity. I know for a fact she was eating a pastry like other Gelson's customers, because I bought it for her. The manager made such a commotion that he disturbed my friends and was so adamant about making her leave that she did not have time to gather her belongings, leaving her bra under a table. This shameful behavior by the manager was uncalled for. He could have quietly asked her to leave or relocated her outside but instead made an inappropriate exhibition without treating the woman with kindness and compassion. If this is how the Gelson's Tarzana Manager treats a customer, I can't imagine how he treats the employees. read more

The shopping experience at Gelson's has always been top notch. The deli meats and cheeses are fresh and of the highest quality. This location is especially clean and well stocked. Courteous and efficient staff are always available to assist us. There are very pricey items, but mostly quite affordable. read more

The store is well kept and well stocked. But the prices are too high. For example, the Hormel bacon is double the price compared to Target for the same product! I went there the other day to order something from the meat section. Ruben was rude in person and over the phone. Come on! I ordered online from the Wolfgang Puck Cafe inside Gelson's on Reseda Blvd. It was a large Margherita Pizza. However, after I got home we saw it was a scraggly flat circle of dough with barely any topping. The pizza was nothing like what is advertised on the Gelson's Wolfgang Puck website. It was more like a burnt cheese pancake, shriveled and dry. And instead of toppings it was super salty. We could not even eat it. $pizza + $ tax + $ tip = $25 in the garbage can. read more

They want the clienteles to see what they have in store for them. Products are not difficult to find as the aisles are labeled accordingly. My family and I have been loyal Gelson's customers since the Tarzana branch first opened its doors in the sixties. It's changed over time and is not what it once was. But proximity and some great staff, especially the managers and in the meat dept. kept me coming back. Due to health issues, I haven't been able to shop in person most of the time in the last three years, relying instead on Instacart, which I did on October 26th. The next day, I discovered a strange smell overwhelming my refrigerator and traced the odor to the lox the shopper bought at this store. It smelled so bad and so strong that, even after I'd wrapped it in plastic, I could still smell it. I immediately called to talk with the manager, not only to see about a refund or exchange, but to alert him to a possible problem with a product. The man I spoke with (whose name I got, but didn't write down) was very nice and polite and seemed genuinely concerned, and he told me to bring the receipt back to the store for a refund. He knew I'd used Instacart when he instructed me to come back to the store. I told him I probably wouldn't be able to get there until the next day and he said that wouldn't be a problem. Well, it turned out, it WAS. When I entered the store, receipt and lox in hand and went to the manager's desk, I found two of the managers talking with another customer. I was ignored for several minutes without so much as a nod until said customer walked away. At this point, one of the managers, a man named Robert, finally turned in my direction. He never asked what I wanted, just waited for me to talk. When I showed him the fish and receipt and explained the issue, he interrupted me to tell me it wasn't Gelson's problem; I'd need to call Instacart. When I explained that I'd called and been told to come to the store, he asked, "By who?" and when I couldn't recall the name, he immediately started treating me like I was lying. I was kind of stunned, really. Finding myself interrupted, mansplained to, and treated as a liar - over a package of fish, no less! - was bizarre. Robert was immovable about any refund, but finally said I could get a replacement. Had he said this at the start I'd have been fine with it. By this point, however, I was becoming annoyed, especially by his weirdly arrogant and unfriendly attitude, and I told him as much, pointing out how long my family had shopped there and how I'd never come across such behavior before. He didn't seem to care. He did walk me over to the meat department, though, and told the butcher what I needed. The butcher was nice enough to open an entirely new package of lox for me. But before he wrapped it up, I asked to smell it to be sure it was okay. To my unpleasant surprise, it was not. It had the same overpowering rancid fish smell that the lox I'd returned had. The butcher was now at a loss and told me to go back to the manager to ask for a refund ...again. With dread, I wandered back to the manager's station and, again, before I could finish speaking, was interrupted to be told I had to call Instacart. "So I schlepped down here for no reason?" I asked. Robert just shrugged unconcerned and then told me he spoke to the other managers and no one said they'd spoken to me. Again, suggesting I was lying. I found his attitude insulting and as I started saying so, he yet again, interrupted me. This time to mockingly say, "Yeah, yeah, you've been shopping here forever, right, you told me, I know. Uh-huh, whatever. You need to call Instacart." I was so shocked that I flat out told him he was acting like an @ssh0le. And that maybe my days of shopping here "forever" had come to an end. To this he said, "Great! Go! Leave! Waddle on out of here!" I should point out that my health reasons that I alluded to above include an arthritic back and knee. I walk with a pronounced limp. Being told (at top volume) to "waddle on out of here" must have seemed really amusing to Robert. And the fact that he carried on following me to the exit, yelling insults and telling me how glad he was that I'd be an EX-customer just added an element of vulgar spectacle to the whole debacle. I contacted Gelson's corporate office to complain and got a call back from a fellow who sounded deeply concerned and apologetic and asked me multiple times what he could do to make the situation right. The only thing I asked for was to never have to see this Robert person in their store again. He said something about "We can work with that" and then offered me a coupon. It's been over two weeks, I've written again to see what's been done and been met with silence. Browsing though reviews here I see that this is not new for Robert. He's been called out by name for similar nastiness going back to 2022. Clearly, Gelson's doesn't care. Keeping a vile, antisocial manager is apparently more important than keeping a long-time customer. So be it, Gelson's. I'm done. And I needn't tell you what you can do with your coupon. read more

THEY NEED SELF CHECK OUT LINES.... i just needed to scan the receipts to pay for takeout. took 20mins during a Thursday at 11:20am & then tried charging me for a bag to carry my take out food from wolf gang... the cashier asked if i wanted a bag, i said for what? i usually get a bag when i used to get takeout food from wolf gang, she told me to talk to her manager. i told her tell your manager when i don't get a bag im gonna come grab one to carry my takeout. i am NOT going grocery shopping i ended up getting takeout w/ out a bag this time, and had to grab my own bag. After a long time I finally decided to stop by this Gelsons I usually shop at the one in Studio City, Very clean, great selection of products, organized aisles and the worst customer service you could possibly imagine from a semi-high end grocery store. I didn't get the name of a older man he seemed to be dressed as a manger in black slacks and a dark blue dress shirt tucked in but I hope I never run into that man ever again . As I was existing the store with my hundred of dollars of groceries he was standing outside the store smoking his vape or cigarette blowing it in my face as I left. Someone please have a talk and let him know that being polite and helping customers is part of your job description and smoking directly outside the store blowing smoke into the faces of customers is not in your job description. if I got his name I would call corporate with this complaint. Wanted to like this grocery store. It's clean and less sketchy than Ralph's. Received negative experience multiple times by staff. Tonight I Was turned away at the front by a security guard because I arrived within 5 minutes of closing time. I came to grab 3 quick items . In my mind if the doors are open, you are open as a business. If you close earlier than that, then close the doors. He was a dick about it too. I just decided that I wanted a pastry There were two women behind the counter and younger one and a shorter older woman and it was about 8:45pm 15? minutes before closing time I approach the counter and I made visual contact with a short a woman who I asked for pleasantly for a pineapple, upside down cake. She quickly asked how many and then under the breast quickly said he's at all as she was walking away, and didn't give me a chance to respond to her As she pineapple upside down cake, I asked her for a mini eclair as well and her response was that's why I asked you. I let her go about her little attitude, tantrum, packaging, my pastries, and quite frankly took her time box to my pastries. Set them aside as I asked her to give them to me and I'm happy to pay at the register. She points a finger up in the air and then assist another customer as I stood there waiting for her After she took a few minutes assisting this other woman that she couldn't even finish assisting she returns her attention back to me and goes to the register. I clearly said to her I'll be paying at the register at the front of the store because I don't appreciate your attitude Took a couple of minutes to get the print out and my pastries I completely understand we all have long days. I completely understand that when you were going to customer service industry sometimes you have bad days because you have bad customers but I was not a bad customer and I did not deserve her attitude Now if she had bothered asking me how my day was, I could've told I've only slept two hours but I am completely not OK being rude to anyone because I'm tired as she was. We have been loyal shoppers at Gelsons for years but today we went shopping and my wife bought a 16oz package of Oscar Meyer thick cut bacon.When she got home and checked her bill and saw she was charged 15.99. I asked her to call Vons for a price check for the exact same item and we were shocked to hear that it was 6.99 for the exact same thing.. what is wrong with them in charging .56% more. I absolutely love Gelsons as a healthy supermarket. I love that they carry WolfGang Pucks Pizza and Sandwiches. The other day I stopped by for some good pizza but it was awful. I have had the pizza from the Westlake location, which tastes much better. The pizza here looked liked it had been sitting there for weeks. They heated up the pizza and it was still cold and very disgusting. I will definitely not come back here for the pizza. read more

Been going to Gelson's for many many years ( like 50 years as I used to sit in the basket in Encino Gelson's while my mom shopped :) ) , I go to many locations , but this one is close to my work, so I run there several times a week to get dinner on the way back home . I leave work maybe by 7:00 pm ish. Sometimes later . They recently changed their hours to close at 8pm & the salad bar closes at like 7-7:30 pm. This is so unaccommodating to working people . Update: Since I posted my last review I noticed an almost immediate and remarkable change - this update is to confirm that prime beef is now true to label; abundant marbling - so much beautiful marbling in the prime beef section like I have never seen before. I am delighted, very delighted, to say the least, about this development. But I'm also bitter - please see my previous review on this Gelson's issue.... I live in the area and will keep an eye on it. As it sits, this is to elevate Gelson's to the ONLY supermarket selling prime beef every day, as opposed to others including Wholefoods, offering such quality on rare occasion or not at all. Of note, Gelson's is also the ONLY market I'm aware of offering live Atlantic lobsters every day - try to find that anywhere else. So this is an upgrade from one to a full 5 Stars rating, both deserved in their own right! read more

The majority of Gelson's employees at the Tarzana location are courteous, efficient and provide excellent customer service. Unfortunately, a few of the deli department employees are extremely ill-mannered, unpleasant and inefficient. They do not pay attention to what the customer requests. They frequently pack up the wrong items (turkey instead of ham, thick slices of deli meats instead of thin, etc). The custom ordered sandwiches are usually disappointing and are not made according to my instructions. If I order a Black Forest ham and Swiss cheese sandwich I expect to receive a Black Forest ham and Swiss cheese sandwich! The sandwich I take home is often tasteless (boiled ham - not Black Forest, cheese. - not Swiss, no mayo,etc.). The rude employees and the frequent incorrect orders are unacceptable to me and I will no longer purchase any items from deli department in Tarzana. read more

This Gerson's always has what I want, but the Saturday after Thanksgiving, they closed at 7pm! It was no longer a holiday and all of the food bars were closed 30 mins before closing too. Shame.... Was really looking forward to their soup. read more

This Gelsons is so different compared to the other locations I've shopped at. For example, when I buy chicken in Tarzana, there is grizzle and tendons and just not butchered that well. When I buy it in Encino, the cuts are so much better and cleaner. They really need to make better cuts especially for $12.99 a pound for chicken! The bakery, in Encino, is a lot better, with more variety. I have seen moldy vegetables and expired food in Tarzana, but not Encino. Finally, the parking lot is scary in Tarzana with drugged-up homeless people wandering around. read more

Pretty gross prepared foods here. I rarely buy prepared foods from a grocery store deli, but was in a fix for dinner for the family. The seasoned sea bass I bought was basically rotten. It stank horribly when cooked, meaning it was super old fish. I hear cheap grocery stores take their old, nearly expired meats and season them to sell quickly. This fish should have been thrown out. It was also COVERED IN SALT to try to hide the smell and off taste. The precooked brussel sprouts were not prepped correctly, no one cut the VERY HARD stem off the sprouts, making them inedible. They also tasted like alcohol or something, like they had turned bad before cooking. This place is WAY overpriced for the LOW quality of nearly expired fish and prepped sides they sell. Also while I was there, I looked at some honeydew melons, but didn't buy one because nearly ALL of the 2 dozen melons out in the produce section were soft and rotten in spots, leaking juices and many were growing fruit fly maggots. Oh well it's cold and I don't feel like walking across to Vons. Lol! Store is clean, nicely laid out and employees friendly. There were several people I. One line but this nice guy took me over to check stand 9 and I was in an out. Plentiful parking and the ice cream I got was every bit as good as the full fat variety of Ben and Jerry's.
