The…read moreGlenmoriston was by far the best hotel - based on value, location, comfort, cleanliness, and friendliness of staff. The hotel is situated right on the bank of the River Ness. It's within easy walking distance of the Ness Islands in one direction, and the main part of town - shops and restaurants - in the other direction. I liked that it was a bit removed from "the bustle" of the city (if Inverness can ever be said to "bustle"), but close enough to get to without a car. Our room was in the "townhome" part of the hotel (not the main building, but the one across the parking lot), which was perfect. Our room was gigantic and super comfortable. My favorite thing was that the windows actually opened, which gave us a chance to enjoy the slight breeze and gave us a front-row seat to the church bells ringing down the way. The bed was huge and very comfortable. It was actually a little *too* comfortable; we ended up sleeping over 10 hours on our first night there! I woke up about five minutes before the front desk called to ask if we'd be needing housekeeping for the day. Oopsie! We didn't take advantage of room service or hit any of the property's restaurants/bars while we were there (we typically like to experience all a city has to offer when we travel, so while their menu looked inviting, we chose to try some of the places recommended by our taxi driver on the way into town, instead.) They did get bonus points for welcoming us to the hotel with two glasses of champagne - their way of congratulating us on our wedding anniversary. The shower looked modern, but it was kind of awkward to use, and it leaked all over the floor. They have a hair dryer (look in the desk if you can't find it elsewhere), as well as a mini putting green (stored in the closet; it's how you know you're in Scotland, I guess!) There's a TV we never used, and two comfy club chairs situated next to the windows. Check-in and check-out were fast, easy and friendly. They also went out of their way to protect us on that first day. Our taxi driver (super sweet girl named Michelle) was giving us all sorts of tips and advice on our way in, and after I mentioned my half-baked plan to rent bikes to ride out to Culloden, she dropped us off and headed towards a bike shop in town to get information on rentals. She came back to the hotel to tell us everything in person, and the front desk agent refused to tell her our room information, even though she (Michelle) kept insisting we were expecting her. This was the place that made us feel most comfortable, where we could relax after a long day of playing tourist, and where we'd definitely book again, if we're lucky enough to return to Inverness. If you're looking for a place to stay, give them a try!

The bathtub was huge and had grab bars, but also had high sides and was elevated a few inches off the floor. On the plus side, the lobby was grand with plush seating and a staircase that was the inspiration for the movie set of Titanic. A delicious continental breakfast full of options was served in the Wallace room. The hotel also has its own full service bar/restaurant just across the lobby. We also had wine and their house lager with our meal. Our meals arrived promptly and both were delicious. Service was prompt and professional. We spent one of our 4 nights in town at Hootananny...It's a lively spot with a full restaurant and bar and good whiskey recommendations from the bartender. On this night, it was a jam, as opposed to a frontal performance...these jams you'll find throughout Scotland are really not performances, but musicians who gather together in the front of the venue, sitting in a circle, typically with a group of them with their backs to the audience, who play for each other, for the sheer and obvious love of the collaborative music. They ran through all kinds of traditional Scottish tunes, occasionally with instruments put aside to let a couple of them sing a cappella. It was a beautiful experience to watch "performers" immersing themselves in each other's music, with us, the audience, grateful, if not incidental, receivers of it. They've got a decent whisky selection too, and, as I found throughout Scotland, every bartender seemed knowledgeable in what was offered and willing to have a conversation to help guide you to what you might want to drink that night. (I had a Bunnahabain dram.) If you've got a few nights in town, this is one of the main 3 venues you should check out...the other two we experienced were more direct performances, also good, but to experience a musician's jam circle like this, is truly a wonderful and unique experience to have when in town.
