I saw a local food influencer post about Gee's (pronounced "Jee's") Pastries and when I saw them on Burrow Shop, I had to buy some!
It's a super small, local business working out of a ghost kitchen, where I think the owner is also the one making the pies (patties) and there may be another staff member, but that's it!
They make ready-to-bake Nigerian-style meat pies and chicken pies that you buy frozen and bake from frozen. The dough is made from scratch and the ingredients are 100% domestically sourced. They already come egg-washed, so you literally just take them out of the freezer and bake.
I had never had Nigerian meat pies before so I bought a 10-pack of the original meat (beef) pies. For some reason I thought they'd be spicy but they weren't, just very flavourful and peppery. There was plenty of filling with beef and big chunks of potatoes and carrots. The crust was amazing! Super buttery and flaky. Craving them again as I write this.
My husband popped them all in the oven and I thought ugh why, we didn't need that many, but we definitely did haha not because a couple didn't make us full, but because they were just so good and we ate them throughout the day and the day after for brunch with salad and tea. Very comforting and satisfying!
The handling and baking instructions are also on their website for both a conventional oven and air fryer.
Will definitely be trying the chicken pies next time! Not sure why I thought it was shredded chicken but I believe it's ground.
If you order them online directly through their website, the pickup is at 291 Via San Marino Street in Nepean (Barrhaven), otherwise their website lists other locations across the city where you can buy them. read more
