I was in the area for work and stopped by to grab some takeout for my husband and I. I got the Ajebutter Beef Combo ($19.99) and the Ajebutter Chicken Combo ($19.99). Both combos came with coleslaw, rice and plantains. I chose Jollof rice. The beef combo had 2 large tender cubes of beef. The chicken combo had 3 drumsticks. My husband and I shared the combos. The beef was lean and tender. I really enjoyed it. I liked the fried chicken too. Both meats were full of flavour. They were sitting in a puddle of oil though. The Jollof rice was spicy and delicious, but a bit too oily for my liking. The plantains were soft and sweet. The coleslaw was tangy and vinegary. I liked that it wasn't cream based. I usually don't like coleslaw, but I liked this one. Service was pleasant and fairly quick. The restaurant has lots of seating. It's brightly lit and clean. Looks to be newly built/ renovated. They have a couch and Scrabble tile-like decorations on the wall. The interior is funky and cool-looking. Glad to have discovered this Nigerian restaurant. I'm not in this part of town much anymore, but would gladly return in the future. Looking forward to trying their other items. There is free parking in front of the restaurant in a small shared parking lot with neighbouring businesses. (63)

When I…read morearrived a half hour later (when they said it would be ready), my food still wasn't ready. I had to wait another 20 minutes. I would say that the service is quite slow, though polite. I've never had egusi and I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the pounded yam with the stew. However. The meats they put in the egusi were really dry and over cooked. There were a few chunks of beef which was sooo dry and hard, and also a piece of tripe. The tripe looked a bit questionable, and I didn't really feel comfortable trying it because it looked a little raw in the middle? We weren't sure but the middle texture looked off. For the goat platter, I didn't really enjoy that as much. The goat was also dry and definitely overcooked. The jollof rice tasted like smoke. I like a smokey flavour sometimes but it seems like they added artificial smoke flavour or something. It was very overpowering and it was the only flavour of the rice. It wasn't really spicy or anything. Also, I ordered a large platter but the portion wasn't that large. It was an ok amount I guess. I will definitely try more egusi stew in the future but I'm not sure that I'll be back here. For the price, I found the food a little bit underwhelming.

The platter came with 3 pieces of chicken (a drumstick, a thigh, and a wing with a bit of breast meat attached), jollof rice, plantains, some lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and onions, a tiny container of coleslaw, and some extra spices to sprinkle on your meal if you want it spicier/hotter. The spice level was good. It had a definite kick to it. It wasn't super hot (but could be made so with the extra spices), but if you don't like spicy food, I probably wouldn't recommend this dish, lol. My husband and I loved the flavour and hotness of the chicken and the jollof rice. Flavour party in our mouths, lol. I found the rice a bit on the oily side, but it was still really good. The plantains were soft and sweet. The lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and onions were fresh and crisp. The coleslaw was mayo based and unremarkable, but ok. The combo platter came with a drink and I chose a can of Sprite. I ordered at the restaurant and service was efficient. I waited less than 15 minutes for my food. The dining room is pretty and quite large. They have their menu printed on large signs in front of the bar. They had no takeout menus so I just used the signs in front of the bar. If you dine-in they have regular menus. The restaurant is on the ground floor of a four-storey building. There's a parking behind the building (the entrance is off Bayswater). Street parking is also available.

La Fromentine is an African restaurant that opened up where Roost & Grills used to be. I was super…read moredisappointed to see Roost & Grills close because the food was awesome and the owners were the nicest ever. As a consolation, I was glad to see another independent restaurant open up. La Fromentine has 2 locations, one in Gatineau across the river which has been around for a while, and this one in Old Ottawa South that opened up July 2020. So they open at 4pm each day. I arrived right at 4pm to place my takeout order. I ordered a half chicken meal with jollof rice and plantains ($11.99) and a lamb meal, also with jollof rice and plantains ($14.99). They said it would be ready around 5pm. I left my phone number and they said they would call me if it was ready before 5pm. So off I went to run some errands in the area. I got a call at 4:45pm from them telling me that the grill they use to cook the lamb was not working properly and if I wanted to change my order. Ok, I'll take 2 half chicken meals then. They said, ok, they'll be ready at 5:15pm. I'm easygoing and I understand that these things happen. I arrive at the restaurant at 5:10pm and they said just a few more minutes. I did not end up getting my food until 5:40pm but they did give me a free drink of my choice to make up for the wait (I got an orange juice, by the way, lol). I thought that was a kind gesture. The man serving me was really nice. But the wait was really long and I had not had lunch so I was getting a bit hangry, considering the restaurant smelled really good, haha. It was freezing cold outside and no one else was in the restaurant, so I just sat and waited in the restaurant and snapped some pictures of the interior for y'all ;) So when I went to pay I noticed they charged me $13.99 for each chicken meal even though the menu price was $11.99. Normally I would have said something, but it's the Pandemic, and I get it, restaurants have been suffering, so I let it slide. However, I do feel that if a place is going to raise their prices, it should be reflected on the menu (even it's just handwritten in). At any rate, $13.99 was still a reasonable price. The food itself was good, but I found the chicken was burnt. I tasted too much charcoal/carbon, lol. The flavouring of the chicken was mild and lacked the oomph of African grilled chicken I've had at other places. The jollof rice was just rice and spices, no vegetables, and it too was mild in spices and flavour for my taste buds. The plantains though we're delicious. So soft and sweet. Portion size was excellent. I was definitely stuffed afterwards. If I lived in the area and could just wait for the food at home and was not urgently hungry, I would return to try other items. The restaurant is small, with simple decor. Just street parking, which is free on weekends.

In fact, she just now described it as inedible (though she ate most of it, so that's not quite accurate). I hadn't eaten goat in years, found it quite tasty, and was impressed that I could eat meat without a sauce of any sort. The accompanying fries were very soggy and greasy, however. The plantain, while also greasy, was among the tastiest I've had. Overall, I don't think we will be ordering from La Fromentine again unless we happen to be jonesing for some goat flesh.

If so, I learned that the owner of those 2 places is the owner of the newly opened OB&O Afro-Caribbean Restaurant! I missed out on eating at Fumi's and Mugena's, so was glad to be able to try OB&O. The food is delicious!! My husband and I shared the Jerk Chicken Platter ($16.99) and the Beef Roti and Salad (which was actually coleslaw) ($11.99). The Jerk Chicken Platter came with a chicken leg (drumstick with thigh attached), 4 pieces of plantains, and lots of rice and beans. The chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender and so flavourful. It had a good amount of heat to it. So I wouldn't recommend it if you can't handle spice. It's not overly spicy, but definitely has some kick. I loved the chicken. The plantains were sweet and soft without being mushy. They were great. The rice was plentiful and spotted with red kidney beans. It also had a spicy kick to it. My only complaint is that it was a bit too oily for my tastes. However, it was still incredibly enjoyable. The Beef Roti was also delicious. The beef cubes, although not all that plentiful, were tender and lean. The potatoes and chickpeas were a good consistency, not too hard but not too mushy. Overall, very tasty, and not spicy at all. I was not a fan of the coleslaw, but I don't like coleslaw in general. It was a mayo-based coleslaw with cabbage, carrots and cucumbers. The latter is an ingredient I don't usually see in coleslaw, so props to them for that. It wasn't bad, I just don't like coleslaw. Overall, we both really enjoyed the food. I'm looking for to trying the African food there. We got takeout and the takeout boxes were styrofoam. I would have preferred cardboard boxes. I waited maybe 15-20 minutes for my food. They have some Jamaican patties in the warmer if you're looking for a quick grab and go snack. They are $2.99 each. The inside of the restaurant is very casual. The tables have plastic over them. OB&O is in the space that was formerly Mont Tacos. Street parking or parking in the strip mall lot, which is small.
