There's no signage to indicate they sell sandwiches, but reviews on Google said just ask the lady for "the sandwich" which is what I did. I got 2, one for my husband and one for myself. The sandwich comes with whatever meats they have at hand, whatever cheese they have at hand, lettuce, pickles, mustard and mayo. I asked the lady to hold the mayo and she did. The Sandwich is $6.50, which is a pretty good deal nowadays. The cheese was a delicious smoked Swiss and the meats were a salami and 2-3 different types of ham. It was delicious! The bread was a bit harder and chewier than my preference, but it was still good. They had some exotic Fanta and Schweppes drinks that I had never seen before. They also had lots of packaged (shelf-stable) cookies and candies from Eastern Europe. Service was friendly and efficient. I got away with Chorizo, some lean ground beef and some beautiful olive oil. Is this place cheap? No! But, I pay for quality without batting an eye. Especially foodie stuff. Next round was a Tuesday aft. Ahhh. Better. I could see everything, not so packed. It was just after a long weekend so some things were sold out but I grabbed more lean beef, a chicken parm portion, a beef Jamaican patty and a stuffed potato. All were good! The chicken portion from the fresh cabinet was $11.50! More than my lb of ground beef! But it was a filling piece and fed me x 2. I love this place.

But it's the meat, and Lavergne's meat probably makes them the best butcher shop in Ottawa (at least that I've visited). I've been going for over 10 years and they never disappoint, with reasonable prices to boot. In particular, their sausages, pepperettes and BACON are fantastic, as are their various other cuts of fresh meat. Their store-made pork schnitzels are a favourite at home and much better than Metro (which has good meat), and Farm Boy (which dropped "normal" pork schnitzels many years ago in favour of that lime-cilantro aberration). Oh, and don't forget to try their cretons! Anyhoo, Lavergnes is a local treasure and I hope they're around for decades to come.

You're not required to pick a number to get service, but it does get busy in here. The shop has a cement floor, with display cases laid out in front of you as you walk in.
