GDC hired me to do a Title 24 HERS inspection on a property they remodeled in San Diego back in August. I performed the services and was told to email them an invoice. 30 days went by with no payment! I spoke with John the project supervisor and he advised they would send me a check in the mail. Another week, no payment. Spoke with John again and had to re-submit an invoice and was told a check would be sent. Another week goes by and no payment. I called the office and spoke with Sky the office manager. She advised that she would look into it and call me back...she never did. I called back again and she stated she would look into it again and call me back...she never did. I have called multiple times, leaving messages with the office manager, general manager and even the owner with no response from anyone. The services were performed back in August and I still have not received payment. Be careful when hiring this company! If they skipped out on payment for me, they'll do the same to you. read more

Over the years we've worked with several San Diego contractors and contractors in La Jolla for our home and office construction projects. GDC Construction owned by Pancho Dewhurst by far has been the most transparent and their team truly cares about the quality and timeliness of their work. Our most recent project with GDC Construction was a La Jolla tenant improvement, approximately 2,000 sq. ft. office build out that was completed at the end of 2018. Even in this busy construction market the GDC team was properly staffed and able to meet our tight deadline. Martin, their top carpenter and others did outstanding work. The project was awarded to GDC Construction, and Pancho Dewhurst and his crew when right to work on this small project. The work was expertly layout and progressed rapidly. The construction of the new site drainage, hardscape and flat work was completed on schedule. The terrace site walls was a challenge that GDC with Tony Feirrer who has over 40 years of supervisory experience , was completed with ease. From the first meeting you could tell this was going to be outstanding project. My house was remodeled 10 yrs ago. We have worked with GDC many times over several years, and have never been anything but impressed with their professionalism and workmanship. The projects run on time, subcontractors are kept in line, and everything that happens is documented and communicated. We have been through many homes in the area, and with some contractors surprises can pop up mid-project, new charges suddenly appear, but the team at GDC has never made us feel blind-sided or shorted. The pride that everyone on the work site takes in their craft and the responsiveness of each member of the GDC crew has been above and beyond the call of duty, and never left us less than impressed. Pancho, Amy, Tony, and Peter have always been more than helpful and shown an amazing work ethic, doing everything it takes to get the project done and done well. GDC Construction was amazing to work with. They recently completed my extensive remodel in San Diego. I was very impressed with our Superintendent Tony. He was very knowledgeable and always took the extra time to explain the process to us. The owner Pancho Dewhurst was also great to work with. He provided us with a weekly agenda and always kept us up to date on the decisions that we needed to make along the process. A couple of subcontractors did not show up on time but other than that the process went very smooth and we were very satisfied with the quality. After spending quite a bit of time researching and vetting my options, we were very pleased with our choice in GDC Construction. My three main criteria for choosing them in my job were that the workers were on time/efficient, they kept within the budget, and that they had flawless quality of work. They surpassed all expectations. Karl was an outstanding Foreman and the subcontractors were always polite and professional. Our project was a 5000sqft ground up custom home in San Diego with a lot of complications with the steep slope and soil conditions. It's important to let the community know that GDC Construction is not who they market themselves to be. Poor management, sloppy accounting and an irresponsible owner says it all. Our relationship began with great enthusiasm but ended when Pancho Dewhurst did not deliver on his promises and misrepresented important financial facts. A General Contractor is someone who you want to be able to trust. Pancho Dewhurst was both dishonest in his dealings with us and his behavior was very upsetting. With so many qualified and honest contractors in town, why bother with a company that you can't trust? We changed contractors and have been relieved to move on. read more

What a dishonest and awful company. Pancho runs one of the biggest scams in San Diego. He doesn't deliver and something tells me the grouch running the books is doing shady things. Tony came every day, but did nothing but watched the others work as he was "supervising". My cat supervises too and for a lot cheaper. Pancho told us he would check in to see the progress. THAT WAS A LIE! He came NEVER and demanded we come to his office to pay him. He needs to be investigated by the BBB because the operation is very unethical. PLEASE DO NOT EVER USE THIS CONTRACTOR!!!!! read more

My family completed a large remodel on our home in La Jolla a few years back with GDC. We had shopped around for months interviewing different contractors in the area and GDC was by far the most professional.  Pancho and his team attended to our questions promptly, the overall customer service was what we were looking for, and their dedication to detail and quality was very impressive.  The project ended up being completed on time even though there were a few unexpected delays with old plumbing that needed replacing.  Peter, the superintendent, communicated with us right away anytime there was a concern or update, and he and Pancho gave us all our options before moving forward so we could stick within the proposed budget.  We really appreciated this!  We've done one other remodel before on our previous home, and we did not have this same experience, so we were very grateful for the communication and transparency about what was happening with our La Jolla home.  From previous experience, remodeling a home can be very stressful, but the experience with GDC was really smooth and positive.  I'd definitely do it again! We love our home and highly recommend GDC Construction. read more

Bill Higgins was our project manager who was excellent, very professional and extremely willing to work with us when changes were necessary. I have put off writing this review for two years, just to make sure that everything with our home remodel was settled, and that I didn't react with the wild-eyed craziness I had by the end of the project. We had a fixed price contract to enlarge our home in LJ, as we had worked with GDC on a smaller project which had gone way over budget; since the workmanship was excellent, we decided to go ahead with the second project. All was wonderful while we had a knowledgeable and competent supervisor on the job; when he refused the owner's direction to "make more money off the {our last name} job", he was fired. Until then, we were on time, reasonably on budget, and had actually enjoyed the project. After firing the supervisor, the owner, whose name I am avoiding using, became more involved on-site and went through all the change orders again, coming up with $140,000 which he said we owed him, but which we most certainly did not. When we refused to pay it, he abandoned our job. Although the job was nearly finished, and the house was habitable, it caused a most incredible and overwhelming inconvenience, additional cost to hire others to finish the jobs, and the greatest stress, and it took us several months to recover from the experience. If you are thinking of hiring GDC, get everything in writing, watch your bills very closely and question everything, and be aware that there WILL be overruns as well as over charges. The better route is to NOT hire GDC, and save yourself an unpleasant and stressful experience. Update, 3-12-17 Well, we are coming up on five years since the completion of our remodel (Mem'l Day) and are still having problems associated with the work done back then. We have had locksmiths out 5 times to try and fix the locks on the doors - one of them was put in up side down - and yesterday a doorknob fell off a (different) door. The dishwasher was installed incorrectly and that repairman has been here 6 times ("But this dishwasher *never* has problems!") I still have very clear memories of the owner screaming at me at a meeting in his office, and coming to the job site and finding fault with everything that everyone was doing, just walking through and criticizing them very very rudely, in addition to rewriting the change orders and increasing the charges, without justification, of all the change orders that had already been paid. He has contacted me in the interim, through our lawyers (yes, it got to that point), to ask what he needs to do to have me take down this review. I named a price, and haven't heard back. It's really a shame, too, because his wife was our architect and she is a lovely person. read more

THE WORST EXPERIENCE WE HAVE EVER EVER HAD WITH ANY PROFESSIONALS. Its is the biggest financial mistake we have ever made. We hired GDC to do a full remodel of our home and the owner/son was way over his head...couldn't manage the job, nor could his project manager....we fired them WAY too late BUT thank goodness while the walls were open .....we had to redo framing and pipes...AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL experience....I have waited a long time to write this...to calm down. If we had gone with the contractor we ended up using (who was incredible and came in 5% UNDER his estimate) we would have been within budget and on time. Our home is beautiful and thanks to the other contractor (CBS construction) is perfectly done. He helps maintain it and stands behind everything he does. He was on the job everyday and the workmanship was 5 star. The GDC experiences was a sad and sorry one i will never forgot. Pancho, their fearless leader, does NOT know what he is doing! He was over his head ... totally out of his league. GDC also charges for staff....everything is PLUS PLUS. Overages constant....timing awful. My suggestion is STAY AWAY from GDC...rating ZERO As years have gone by I find myself more disgusted by these crocks. I find it amazing they are still around. read more
