I picked up a pretty sweet tee and some cologne. It is a little pricey, but after checking online at what other stores offered, it's a fair price for quality items. Every item in the store had a unique look to it and fit the vintage inspired theme of the store. The staff was really friendly, the guy who ran the store took my email when I couldn't find the size of a tee shirt I wanted, and he offered to send me an e-mail when it was available, and ship it to me if I would like. He genuinely seemed interested in making sure I had a good experience at his store, and was not pushy at all. Overall it was a great store filled with Asheville charm.

The owner asked me to try on a similar dress on the floor as it would be difficult to take off the manikin (but that she would take it off for purchase). I tried it on the one on the floor but again, let her know that I did not like the pattern of this one and wanted to purchase the one on display. She said she would take it off the manikin and hold it for me behind the counter. She bagged while I talked to my friend. I returned home to San Diego and opened the bag to find that she had not given me the one off the manikin as agreed. She knew we were from out-of-town and that I would not have purchased the dress she sent me home with. There are so many bohemian import stores in the area with good customer service, who would never try and pull something like this (even with a perceived tourist). So we stopped here on our way out to the national park. There were no hard sells, no baits and switches, just great customer service and knowledgeability. Kaleb asked if I was looking for anything specific. I explained to him the situation and he asked what shoes I wore at home and what I was looking to do while I was in NC (which are the perfect questions, in my opinion). I told him and he not only was aware of the brand but also the important factors of that particular "model". (I am severely "duck footed" and need a shoe so wide that it might as well be a clown shoe). He brought out a few shoes that also met those criteria. I was impressed by the options he brought out because clearly a lot of thought went into the selection. One was the brand/model I wear at home (but the only color they had in stock in my size was pure white). Another was an option that was more hiking-focused (since I had mentioned we would be walking through Pisgah). And another was similar to the brand/model I wore at home but a more neutral color (since an all-white shoe worn while hiking will quickly become not-white). I wound up going with the brand/model I wear at home (Altra Escalante) in white because the aesthetics aren't particularly important to me, and, I wanted something more all-purpose. But the fact that he had really considered what I would be using the shoes for and presented several great options was really impressive. And all in all, the entire experience from entering the store to checkout took less than 15 minutes. No long waits, no hard sells. And no markup either - same price as Amazon. So I was very happy that I was able to support a local store with such knowledgable and helpful staff

After meeting the owner Connie at our club, my husband and I thought we would pop into her store. Whilst browsing, we saw a small green purse on a display. Seeing that we are golf fans and the Masters was a week away we decided to purchase said purse. The tag on the purse stated $128. I took it to the register, paid and went about my merry way. This is where the story starts! Approximately a week later, I receive a phone call from the store manager (I assume they scoured through our directory at the club to track me down) stating the item had been mis-marked and should have been $528 not $128 and DEMANDED I make up the difference immediately with a credit card over the phone!!! With purse already in hand and on my way to Honkey Tonk row in Nashville, I wasn't going to let such a bizarre and outrageous demand alter my weekend and whilst I felt some understanding as we all understand mistakes happen but that the purse was only worth $128 to me and not the $528, and it was being used currently on my trip so we would have to come to a solution after vacation. This is where bizarre event number 2 evolves. I decided, being a business owner myself, and feeling empathy for the perceived plight of the sales associate, I said why don't we split the difference and I'll pay cost for the rest. I felt this was a fair proposition and not to mention I have already used the purse at this point on my trip. To my surprise they stated they wouldn't be discounting the purse at all and that I needed to return the purse, USED!!!!! Now mind you it wasn't gently used at this point, my girlfriends and I hopped around Nashville for 3 days celebrating a bachelorette party. I thought she must be kidding and ended the call as clearly my compromise of paying cost was outside her authority. Lo and behold, Ten minutes later I receive a phone call from the owner, Connie. She doubles down and tells me that I should pay full price PERIOD or return the item to the store!!! Flabbergasted to say the least and shocked as never in my life could I have imagined a store owner request USED, receipted merchandise back! She then CAME TO MY HOUSE and picked up the purse!!!!!!! Needless to say, if you see a green purse in Talloni for sale, it's used (with a little honkey tonk love) and whatever you do don't give them your information unless you want a visit from Connie. I'm not sure if a business can get negative stars, but this experience certainly warrants its own classification.

This is the BEST vintage store I have ever been in, and I do a LOT of vintage shopping, from NY to FL. I was completely knocked out by H of K because: 1) They have larger sized women's clothing! Several dresses that were probably size 10-12 which is super rare since most vintage is size 2-4. 2) They have men's clothes - a lot of them. Most vintage stores have a lot of women's items and hardly any men's, but H of K is about 40% menswear. 3) EVERYTHING is in immaculate condition. The prices reflect this, but nothing I thought was out of reach since you're buying one of a kind, well made clothing. To be clear, this is vintage, not thrift. Some of the items are up to 100 years old, so you can't expect it's going to be $5. 4) Woman working there was so nice! Not pretentious, not pushy, not overbearing, but welcoming--and very sweet when I asked if I could take pictures for my review. 5) There is NO junk or random crap - it's obvious that someone has a keen eye for beautiful things and thoughtfully puts them together in collections. When we visited, there were selections of kimonos, smoking jackets, leather capes (!), summer dresses, etc. What's amazing is that it would be 8-20 of each "genre" so you have a pick of colors and sizes... it's not just one random cape or top hat. There's also home items sprinkled throughout, but in a way that is intentional and curated (like the wool camp blankets in the men's section, vintage quilts near a small section of kids' clothes, selection of aluminum thermoses by the outerwear). 6) I collect vintage women's hats and the selection at H of K is exquisite. Very fine examples of 40's/50's hats in absolute mint condition, and fairly priced. I went a bit bonkers taking pictures of everything - this shop is an absolute dream, and I wish I lived closer so I could visit every weekend. House of Kismet is an incredibly rare combination of incredible items and friendliness.
