We hadn't planned on going here as we had intended to try Melissa O' Hare's food truck offerings that were the same offerings a week ago on our first sojourn. She had parked up within a glamping style place with a stunning view of Camlough lake. It was a dull cool overcast grey day. We speculated that Melissa wouldn't be too busy. Wrong as the line was huge. We guessed we'd queue at least an hour but we aren't prepared to queue five minutes especially in this climate of 9 winter months, two autumn months and maybe one summer month. So we ended up here. All four of us loved our food here. I had delicious fish tacos (£16 with a choice of side). The fish was cod in a light batter with fresh lime, coriander, fresh chilli. My first choice of scampi wasn't available. I opted for a chunky chips side to share around as I didn't want them. While 5 star grub it's too expensive for what it is but was the only dish overpriced. I noted from the menu that a fillet steak with fixings is now £40. The desserts (all £6.5) were scrumptious and fair priced - I had raspberry ruffle baked Alaska and a flat white (£3). Cosy place. The staff are wonderful too. Hope we return soon.

We were there a few nights ago to celebrate our youngest son's birthday. This restaurant is a…read morefavourite of ours. We had booked and arrived as booked. We didn't say it was a birthday. We waited to be seated but there wasn't anyone to seat us. We waited far too long and when the waitress - the older of the only two waitresses serving/ arrived. The greeting was flat and almost felt like she was being put out. She arrived just in time as the barman was about to seat us. I've eaten here hundreds of times over the years. I ordered oysters as a starter only for the waitress to return a few moments later to confirm they had none. Well that's a first. Carlingford Oyster company is a few miles away. So my order became seafood chowder and fillet steak medium. My side dish tobacco onions. My son also ordered the chowder which for the half lifetime I've been eating it here has been superb but not this time. We each knew it wasn't as rich and deep flavoured as before and we were really disappointed. This is one of their finest dishes and we really hope this is a one off. If it happens again we'll send it back and have it off the bill. The price charged means it must be ace every time. I asked for white pepper for my chowder the availability of which was uncertain and when it arrived the younger waitress said I was lucky. If white pepper isn't always available just close. It's not as important as salt is to cooking but it's great for seasoning. I often choose it over black pepper almost always. My fillet was requested medium and it came with a pepper sauce that didn't pour but moved sludge like in lumps in short it was gloop; if it had cream it wasn't discernible nor had it evidence of butter. It tasted factory made. One of the corner stones of the success of Fitzpatrick's was cooking based on classic French cooking (Escoffier) and sauces. It elevates their chowder and onion soups and makes sauces moreish - this pepper sauce is far away from this and it's not and nowhere near good enough. If Danny was still there this sauce wouldn't be and no chef would have had the nerve to put it before him. My fillet was well done, medium to well and medium as I proceeded through it. I'm not precious about it and it was tasty good quality meat which I enjoyed. I only draw a line at bloody meat. My son always opts for rare. The tobacco onions were superbly flavoured stand out 5 stars. I asked for English mustard for my steak but it never arrived and the two overworked waitresses were nowhere to be seen. As desserts weren't offered due to their invisibility I got up to pay. There were five or six guests in the doorway waiting to be seated just as we were earlier that evening and no waitress around. The barman took our payment and I didn't tip which I didn't like but I was not happy. I told the barman some of the issues lousy pepper sauce, non delivery of mustard and poor tasting chowder: he said he'd pass it on. Next time I will return food that's not up to the standard I'm used to at the prices charged.

I…read morereally wanted to try traditional Irish fare so I was a little disappointed when I saw nachos on the menu but I decided to give it a try anyways. They have a lot of different menu items so I decided to ask the server for local food items. She advised that the mussels, calamari, haddock and ribs were local so we opted for a large bowl of mussels and regular size plates of haddock and ribs. They had a lot of interesting choices from all around the world but I like to taste the local ingredients when in traveling. We got the mussels in the white wine cream sauce and I was very happy with that choice because they were so fresh and almost sweet. My dinner companion was not happy that this mussel was tiny. It didn't bother me. The Haddock boujons were perfectly cooked and crispy. They came on top of a little mashed potatoes with mushy peas. For the final plate we got the ribs. They were heavenly, I almost want to say the best I've ever had. The reason. Why is because the meat was tender like butter. The flavor was delicious but it wasn't heavy or heavily smoked like the libs in the USA. They were like air. Not sure if that makes sense but it's the best way I can describe it. For dessert we got the Bailey's cheesecake. It was so smooth that it was like a mousse. Soooo good. The house wine was an insanely good Sauvignon Blanc. The service was great. They were very attendant. The ambience is casual which I liked. The only negative mark o can give is that the beer on draught is German. I was dying for a pint if Irish beer and had to settle for a bottle. I would recommend this restaurant. Everything we had was good

Vegetarian café with great food and ambiance (4.5/5 Green Stars)…read more We stopped here en route to Carlingford on a friend's recommendation and all three of us were very happy we did. The place is lovely - the café is filled with light and plants and the surroundings are beautiful. Mum is a picky eater but she relished the mushroom quiche and finished the entire piece even though it was huge! (Seriously - about three times the size of portions elsewhere.) My brother loved his herbed rice bowl and I liked the organic porridge with fruit and the pistachio plum cake. The only kink was that several items arrived much later than the food - the coffees, bread, and honey for my porridge (I had already finished my porridge by then). The store is filled with great stuff - fresh fruit and veg, and a good selection of some of the most ethical products. Weirdly, the Strandfield website contains no info other than an address, so you have to rely on reviews to get info in advance. The lunch menu is mostly comprised of sourdough pizza, salads (including a quinoa bowl and herbed rice bowl), and sandwiches - see menu photo. There are also lots of bakery items, including freshly baked scones, cakes and wheaten bread (which was really good - I bought one to take home). I'm giving Strandfield café 4.5 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, for these reasons: · I didn't actually notice at the time but the menu is 100% vegetarian! · Strandfield uses free range eggs from their own farm. · My porridge was made with organic oats · Flowers and plants in the café come from Stranfield's own nursery · The grocer sources local and organic fruits and vegetables along free range eggs, and organic health foods · The store stocks a really good selection of ethical goods - I could do most of my shopping here if I lived here. · Strandfield would benefit from providing more info (on the website or menu) on ingredient sourcing.
