There is something seriously wrong going on in this office and I strongly advise against this office for any dermatological care. I started going to Gateway in 2010 as they were the only dermatology office near me and was diagnosed with dishydrotic eczema. They provided some topical medications and told me to stop washing my hands so often (by the way I am a veterinary nurse). I went back several times, went through many rounds of topical and oral medications, and was finally prescribed light box therapy as a last ditch effort it seemed. Light box saved my hands, my life, my job! I started following a dermatology podcast and learned how to manage my eczema on my own and only went in for light box when I couldn't do so due to a particularly bad flare up. I had the most severe flare up in summer 2019. I called for an appointment and was given one 6 weeks later. I told them I had open, bleeding sores! My condition deteriorated quickly and I wound up at an urgent care facility which sent me to the ER for an abscess that cultured positive for MRSA. The ER prescribed oral antibiotics and told me to follow up with my dermatologist for my hands as they are sure that's how the MRSA entered my system. I do wear gloves and protective gear but our patients are wriggling, kicking, biting, licking, its very difficult to keep a good barrier between yourself and the patient. I called Gateway and explained what the ER doctor said and they put me on a cancelation list, five days later I was hospitalized in the ICU with tendosynovitis in my right hand secondary to MRSA. Just for context of severity, they asked me if I wanted to see a priest and have my last rights read to me in case I didn't make it. Clearly the ER staff saved my life because here I am, with both hands (luckily!). I started having a pretty severe flare up early this week and called Gateway for light box therapy, at this point in my disease I am pretty competent in knowing when I need help and when I can manage on my own. Apparently I had a bill from sometime in 2019 that I was unaware of and had gone to collections (super embarrassing!) so I was unable to make an appointment until the bill was paid (of course). I called the collections company and paid my bill, they said their system would be updated within the hour and I should be able to call and make an appointment after that. I called Gateway a couple hours later and was told I was still in collections and was referred to the billing department. The billing department informed me that their system updates monthly and I can call in a month to make an appointment to be seen. I explained I was having what I viewed as a dermatology emergency and they said if that was the case I should go to urgent care and there was nothing they could do. I called back about 15 minutes later and asked for a letter stating what they had told me, which is my legal right to have medical advice given to me in writing. If I go to urgent care I wanted them to see in writing that I will not be able to follow up with my dermatologist for at least one month and it was recommended that I see them instead. They refused the letter and told me that they would document my chart with the conversation and that if I wanted to pick up a copy of my records that I could do so, for a fee. I agreed. When I picked my records up later that afternoon they were incomplete and inaccurate. They also refused to give me the communications from earlier that day, and told me that they are not part of my medical record. I am not a lawyer nor do I have any legal background but from my own quick research, they are incorrect. I sat in their office for 1.5 hours as they gave me the runaround (probably hoping I would give up and leave). I strongly discourage anybody seeking serious dermatological care, receive it from this group. read more
