While the owner was courteous and professional, I later realized that the total charge of $1,300 was significantly higher than what is typically charged for this type of move. The move involved less than a one-bedroom's worth of items, including a queen mattress and box spring, bed frame, recliner chair, jewelry box, small TV, and three boxes. I called about 8 places, was mostly given "estimates that might change" and ambiguity on everything including how many people would show up, sometimes with mandatory hotel costs included because they were driving it 3 hours. I have worked with many moving companies over the years, mostly for long distance or cross country moves. Thankfully, my belongings have been relatively well taken care of and I have not had many disasters. For this move, I was looking for a company that would do a good job with a quick in-city move. I called multiple places and ended up settling on Gate Parkway Movers. Knowing that I had substantially less to move this time than on prior moves, I was looking for decent hourly rates. Many places had rates of $120-$125/hr for the first 1-2 hours and $75-$105 for each additional hour with two movers. This company has a two hour minimum of $350 with 3 movers. Jay, the owner of this company, was kind enough to stop by my place to provide an estimate. He advised that a flat rate would be better than an hourly rate. While I have certainly seen my share of movers taking their time to pack up, load, and unload the truck, I was still hesitant initially to agree to the flat rate as I'd heard that the fee with this company could change if more boxes were present on moving day than what was discussed at the time of the estimate. However, I went with it at his recommendation. On the day of the move, three movers arrived on time. They were very efficient with disassembling items, packing, and moving. Unlike other companies I'd had in the past, they did not wrap the furniture with shrink wrap or moving pads to protect it. I'm not sure why but perhaps it was due to the proximity of the move. Upon arrival at the new place, they did a very nice job getting the boxes out quickly. They did have some difficulty with larger items such as an oversized chair and couches and they forced them through the door creating minor damage to both the couches and the door frame. But in all fairness, Jay had expressed prior concern about the size of the couches. At the end of the day, there were minor issues with the furniture not being wrapped, left items that they returned to retrieve, and forgotten times to meet for estimates. They saved our move!!! We have a 28ft trailer that is being shipped from Jacksonville to Dallas today and luckily they were able to come out within an hour of us calling them this morning. Jay and his crew just completed a same house move for us and did an excellent job. We described what was needed and sent pictures and Jay sent us a quote which was quite reasonable. We had several pieces of heavy furniture that came down from the third floor and one piece that went up to the third floor. We had an armoire that was challenging due to its size and a low ceiling. They took apart one bed and put it back together better than the last movers. Jay took great care to make sure there was no damage and was meticulous about how our things were handled.
