A large, crowded room in downtown, limited street parking and nearby parking. Inside it is a little dim, and counters and crowded shelves surround a central area with lots of tables to game on. The bathrooms are atrocious! Feces, urine, hair all over BOTH toilets. Quite often there's no soap. I don't think anyone cleans these bathrooms. I mentioned to the person working there and they just shrugged their shoulders and didn't say anything. Worse than any gas station bathroom I've ever seen! read more

We went here last Saturday for a benefit concert. It's definitely not a space that was made for live music, but the staff was courteous and kind. The front of the shop was stocked well with lots of games to choose from. The middle room between the shop and music appears to be where people come to play games or tournaments. This is also where they have a bar. My biggest recommendation would be to either get a second bartender when hosting events or streamline service by cutting the craft cocktails from the menu. 20 to 30 minutes in line when the place is t packed is a trifle ridiculous. read more

This is a great place to meet up with people to play any number of games. On top of that, they have a full bar with some nice local brews. It's been years since I've played Magic or role-playing games -- the last time I played D&D, Forgotten Realms was brand new. But I see people having a good time, and that is what matters. I come on Saturdays have a beer or two and chat with the bartender/shopkeep. Super nice guy. If I knew a few folks who were interested, I would get a game of Axis & Allies or Arkham Horror going. read more

A fantastic place for gamers of all skills and styles. Clean and spacious. Lots of gaming play area for D&D but also more low key games. They host a ton of gaming nights and also serve beer and liquor. You can bring your own food in, which makes for the perfect gaming night! Bartender who worked friday night put a tip on my card for himself with out me knowing and gave me no receipt. In an era where every bookstore now carries RPG materials and online shops hawk PDFs, the local gaming store may well be under threat. They need something special to stand apart, and their community aspect plays an important role in their continued success. As a tabletop and board gamer (Cards Against Humanity, woo!), I cheered when Gate Keeper stepped into a vacancy right on 12 Mile Road. I've been somewhat derelict in my duties to frequent the place as much as I would like but let me say they're a colourful and welcome addition. The low-key, friendly ambiance welcomes families and neophyte gamers as much as seasoned veterans with more than a few publishing credits under their belt. No one has ever remotely acted hostile or pushy about their favourite line. The easygoing atmosphere invites casual exploration or deep, thoughtful conversations about particular card combinations for Magic or stellar feats performed in the last Pathfinder session. If this is all Greek to you, never fear. The staff know not everyone has waded into the deep end of the RPG world and will happily provide knowledge catered to your particular skill level without turning it into an uncomfortable presentation. I've witnessed this multiple times when families with younger kids or tweens came in during one of Berkley's many social events and found an eager reception from employees happy to explain what those cool minifigs are for. The parents walked away with a kid (or themselves) carrying a bag with a new game and fresh ideas to play. I cherish that sort of freewheeling creativity anywhere, but especially for a genre so often described as inward-looking despite the popularity of Stranger Things, MMOs, and the like. Beyond that, Gate Keeper is clean, bright, and fresh. Stock isn't falling off shelves or piled up in inscrutably thick boxes last touched when the Lusitania sailed. The accessibility factor comes with open shelves and well-arranged books and materials divided by gaming line, publisher, and other simple, identifiable conventions. No one minds if you peek through the latest D&D 5E supplement or some glossy, fetching supplement of a line you may never have heard of. As ever, staff are approachable but hardly breathing down your neck. They know their stuff and don't carry material or content they are unfamiliar with. The store hosts regular game nights in a nice back area that's far from a cafeteria, stocked with chairs and all the storage one could need. I prefer to host tabletop or games in my own home, but for those who are unable to do so, the venue is tiptop. Best of all, it /feels/ like home without the distractions or downsides, like dishwashers or that ominously saggy couch you inherited thirdhand from cousin Ted. Their prices are fair, the venue bright, and the community spirit sings. Now if I could just find a Mage the Awakening group... read more

Great store with ever growing variety of stuffs. Each time I visit, the inventory grows. The owner is a mild mannered guy who enjoys what he does and is very friendly. I've witnessed the owner chatting it up with customers of all ages and answering every kind of question. He never send to get irritated, and if he does, he never showed it. I applaud that, especially when dealing with younger customers who look up to you. I mention this because although I love the store, Guild of Blades, the staff over there are some of the most unfriendly, unwelcoming stiffs, I've ever come across in this type of hobby. After discovering Gatekeeper, I don't go to Guild of Blades anymore. To the knob who was clearly butt hurt, because his magic cards were sold out, and was offended by the presence of a cat (listen to yourself, brah)... Clearly Gatekeeper is better off without you at any gaming nights. I can imagine you getting on everyone's nerves and ruining a good time. Possibly losing a few teeth along the way. The adoption of the cat is noble and should be applauded, get over yourself, fancy pants. Anyway, I tell it like it is wherever I go, and you can trust me when I say you will be happy to visit this gaming store. Came in here to play some commander showed up a little early to get a feel for the place because I've never been here, I was shopping around looking at a few cards I looked up the value of a card the guy instantly got defensive about it even tho I had the card pulled up on my phone with the tcg price which they told me they follow. After that I was a little taken back but it was understandable so I let it slide, I then asked to see a land card and the guy (a heavy set individual with blue hair) was clearly frustrated with me even tho I literally was just asking to see a card. He said what card, I said the one in the red sleeve (the only card in the case that had a red sleeve) and he was like which one! I was like dude the red land card right there and then he started raising his voice at me. What the actual heck world are we living in in which I can come to support your store and you yell at me because your store is so sloppy you don't have the first clue what the hell is going on. The magic the gathering community has been a blessing to my life but that interaction was pure cancer and it is safe to say I will NEVER be back. read more

This is a great place to find and play games. Long story short, the shop caters to gamers and strives to make sure you enjoy your experience in their store and gaming area. The atmosphere is comfortable and the pricing/selection of games for sale is good, but what makes this place really stand out is the owner, Tim. This guy is a dedicated gamer and pretty much just a super nice fella (yeah i said fella, so what). He took the time to teach my friend how to play the X-Wing miniature game, and now I'm hooked, too. I'm normally not the type to write glowing reviews, but this place is so friendly, they deserve it. read more

Smells like a cat box. Website says FNM 8:30 standard constructed. No one there to play standard. Take the FNM event time off your website then. Last time I was here to buy a booster box of the newest set and they didn't have one left. If you like the smell of cat piss this is your game store. Many other good options in this area for gaming. I would advise going to them. Unless you just need to smell a cat box while you game. Tonight was my last visit. read more
