When I declined, the office manager--not the dentist--insisted on explaining why it was necessary and responded with, "You need to let me finish," in a tone that wasn't warranted and extremely unprofessional. The dentist never returned to discuss the supposed issue or why this treatment was critical, which made it clear this was more about upselling than patient care. Based on our experience and the experience of so many others on here, their business practices are misleading, dishonest, and focused on profit rather than patient well-being.

I went to Newbury Smiles about three months ago for a routine cleaning. At that visit, I was told I…read morehad "deep pockets" in my gums, but no one mentioned cavities, an urgent treatment plan, or any significant issues. I was also never shown any X-rays, and I did not meet with the dentist -- only the hygienist. I returned in November for another cleaning, and immediately after the appointment I was suddenly told that I had three cavities between my teeth on both sides of my mouth and that treatment was "imperative." I was completely blindsided. When I said this was the first time anyone had mentioned cavities, the dentist insisted that I had been told months earlier -- which is simply not true. I clearly remember that conversation, and none of this was discussed. I wasn't shown X-rays at that time because they hadn't even been reviewed yet. The dentist only looked at my August X-rays in November and then accused me of "neglect." His exact words were: "Neglect adds up, and it comes in the form of tooth decay. You've done a good job, but now you have a lot of damage to repair." That comment alone was unprofessional, dismissive, and deeply unsettling. Then they slid a $2,500 treatment plan across the table as if this had all been previously agreed upon. I felt pressured, blindsided, and very uncomfortable with how the entire situation was handled. Something didn't sit right with me, so I went to a highly rated dentist in Westlake for a second opinion -- a practice with consistent five-star reviews. They were incredibly welcoming and thorough. They were shocked by how few X-rays Newbury Smiles had taken and reviewed. After examining me and reviewing new films, they told me: * My gums are healthy * My teeth are in great shape * I do not have cavities * I do not need fillings * I do not need any of the treatment Newbury Smiles recommended The contrast was night and day. In my honest opinion: Newbury Smiles is not operating in the best interest of patients. I left feeling pressured, misled, and spoken to disrespectfully. The dentist is a snake oil salesman and a hustler, and it seems like his staff isn't been an enamored with him either. I'm grateful I trusted my instincts and sought a second opinion. I was with this dental office for 4 years but no longer since my last appointment which turned out to be a disaster thanks to their office managers/receptionists handling billing & insurance paperwork. They weren't very clear when they told me they changed their relationship with my dental insurance and did not provide clarification on what that meant. This isn't the first time this has happened though, as i take it they aren't transparent with the customer for a reason to collect more fees from you. I should've seen the red flags since the office started asking me to pay up front for the cleaning services my second to last visit. This should NEVER happen. I don't even recall a time where I have to pay up front and then the insurance sends me a check. That's why I pay insurance when it comes out of my paycheck. So do push back if they ask you to do this. My experience from other dental offices have been great since they were very transparent and clear as to how they were going to bill my insurance for xyz service. And if it wasn't clear, they went above and beyond to give me an answer. However in this case, before the holidays, I ended up paying significantly more for a simple cleaning and x rays. I didn't expect to foot the bill this time (almost $500!!!). I didn't expect to pay this much since I was planning on using that money to buy gifts for my family but I digress.. I expected better from this office since they take pride in taking care of their patients.. But wait there's more! They also tried to bill me for a procedure that never happened, specifically a fluoride procedure that I remember saying no to. If I didn't call my insurance, this charge would've stayed on there unnoticed, which is unethical. Normally insurance has to go back and forth with their office to take off any additional fees or services that shouldn't have been charged. But because it was not explained to me that they were out of network, I had to foot the bill this time. I didn't expect for this to happen at all due to negligence from their office. I understand the attitude that may come from all this since it's tempting to think "not my insurance nor my money, so not my problem" but this was a new low for them. I don't know if I was the only federal employee in this office and I got cut out since it didn't benefit their office to do business with my insurance and I got caught in the middle of all that, but regardless this was a horrible experience. I can't say I recommend this office after things unfolded the way they did and the patient (me) got screwed over. That was the final straw for me. So I say all this for you (the customer) to be advised of the risk. If you are going with this insurance, demand that they be very clear as to how they will bill their insurance, and what was charged. Do better Newbury Park Dental Arts. You've lost my business.

She called and texted me with the appointment for the next morning. By her action it shows she cared about me. At the appointment she told me I had to go to an oral surgeon to get the tooth extracted. She called the oral surgeon office for me and said I needed to be seen. Long story short the surgeon said Dr. Markiewicz diagnose was correct and the tooth had to be extracted. Dr. Markiewicz is an extremely caring doctor. She has a bubbly and extremely nice personality. I found myself in desperate need of a new dentist about 1.5 years ago after feeling displeased with my old dentist. However, they were always clear and honest on what I needed to get done and helped me get to a place that I could feel comfortable to move forward. Once I overcame some of those deep rooted fears, I've honestly been so impressed with how painless and seamless all of my visits have been. Through this approach I've gotten all of the work done that I've needed/put off in the past and now my teeth are as good as ever.
