I have actually been so hesitant to write this only as every single time I go in I find something else amazing and delicious and so incredibly yummy that I didn't want to not have enough good things to share...and I like the friendly in and out experience of this place not being swarmed by the masses as it should be because they are SO DANG GOOD! When you walk in watch the step up from the curb (spoiler alert I have missed it up and out lol) - open the door to a bakery with old world style deliciousness at your fingertips waiting to delight the taste buds and tug on the heartstrings of family members gone with Hungarian, Finish and German style baked goods. The cheese Danish looks and tastes just like my sweet MILs krummelkugen, the crepes filled with fruited goodness as she would make them and the Boston Cream Pie the same as my Grandfather always chose for his Sunday dinner treat. The kolachi cookies are my go-to for a brunch, a friend drop over or a super bowl party (yes you need cookies for that) - the selection of fresh breads - pick your reason and roll it in carbs (raisin bread, Vienna bread, Indian bread) - the cakes oh my the cakes!!! Bakery style cakes, fresh pies and German cheesecakes oh my! Hubby and I will donate or drop off the baked goods, muffins and donuts for breakfast to our kids teachers, the school staff and local preschool for the holidays. I share my appreciation and love with food (did this account at all give that away hahaha) so for me every time I go in here I come out with a big smile, a box if not two, a bag, a wish list for next time and oh yeah crap watch that step lol. read more

A legendary bakery. Gartman Model Bakery is a local favorite. It has been in Painesville more than 120 years. Best place in town to get cakes and donuts. The prices are cheap for what you get, which is very good stuff. Everything is right out of the oven and so fresh. I chose to get donuts here for a meeting. They have a good variety. It's about $1.50 or so for a donut. The dozen is about $15 or so. It's a pretty reasonable price. The freshness is much better than at a grocery store. Also you can get a cake. They had a few on display and they looked nice. Other items include old school desserts like cannolis. There's lots of good choices for parties. It just is a small store but they have lots to choose from. Service is very friendly and helpful. The group liked the donuts so if we're around here again I'll go here to get them read more

The "biggie" chocolate chip cookie was horrid. Large, flat, quite hard and burst into shards upon bite. Almost no flavor. Very dry cookie that soaks up any moisture in your mouth. The old fashioned cake donut was entirely average. Sort of kinda crispy outer edges and kinda moist inside but nothing to waste your calories on. The chocolate glazed yeast donut was terrible. Super dry, no flavor, all around bad. The only upside was that it is all very cheap to buy. read more

Bakery has been around for over 100 years. Staff is nice and friendly. Prices are so affordable, that I usually leave them a generous type because I feel I'm ripping them off. Bakery items are all good. I have no complaints. read more

This was my first time visiting Gartman Model Bakery. I am always in search of locally owned bakeries. I visited on a Saturday, afternoon. Lots of tasty goodies in the cases. I opted for a huge danish, topped with raspberry and pineapple filling, and a package of butter cookies. The counter staff was super nice. The danish was DIVINE! Fresh, pillowy soft and lots of filling, drizzled with a wonderful glaze. The cookies were disappointing, they were stale and flavorless. They were sold by the pack. My total bill was $10+, so I'm guessing that the danish, was a couple of dollars, which means that I spent $7+ on cookies that were inedible. I would return, and stick to the individual baked goods, which if the danish is any indication, I would be pleased. Lesson learned. read more

This ain't your chain bakery, this is the real deal for your sweet tooth! I was like a kid in a bakery there. Many many choices of donuts, cannolis, cream puffs, cookies, cakes, and breads. They even make sandwiches. I was almost moved to tears while viewing the wide variety, much like some are when they hear a moving sonata or a poem. And, I might even trade Aunt Bee for those ladies in there! They were nice, and I'd say pretty darn good bakers, just from looking. I don't think I could sample as much as I wanted to. Prices are great, we got a cheesecake for less than $7. Would have liked to gotten a dozen and froze them for later. I'll definitely visit here again when we return to visit family! With the connected store fronts in just this little area, we had breakfast, got baked goods, and would have had a drink if the lounge was open! read more

Overly sweet. The bakery is very old and outdated (not in a cool retro way). I bought an eclair once, took one bit and couldn't swallow it for the sickly sweetness. My preferred bakery of choice is Panaderia De Leon. They have limited offerings but what they have is tasty and not crazy American-chemical sweet. I wish I could love Gartmans but so far it is not happening. read more

This is the second birthday cake I have purchased. It was soooo delicious! The cake was so moist! I went to Gartmans last year for a speciality cake. They were able to make a fender guitar cake. Sometimes for speciality cakes you suffer with a dry, unappetising cake. Not so , if it comes from this bakery! I will always get cakes here. The doughnuts are rad too! read more

Ordered a cake for a special birthday party while I was visiting family. I don't know how I missed this bakery in the past, but I will never miss it again. The cake was fabulous, and several guests commented it was the best carrot cake they ever tasted. Nothing like walking into a family owned bakery that just smells sweet the moment you open the door.
