Gartine is one of the most charming restaurants I've ever been inside. As soon as we stepped in the door, we were welcomed by the restaurant owners, who were extremely cheerful and hospitable, despite our arriving a little late for our reservation. We sat down at a cute little table, marveling at our surroundings. The inside of the restaurant is so charming. It is extremely small, but is by no means overcrowded. I would definitely recommend making a reservation, however, as there are only several tables (including one located in the small upstairs area with a balcony that overlooks the rest of the restaurant). I know I've already described a lot in detail, but just you wait, we haven't even ordered our food yet. So once we sat down at an adorable little table with stacked porcelain Dutch plates, complete with paintings of windmills and canals, in addition to teacups and a small candle, we pulled out the menu. There were four different options for high tea (I should probably mention, Gartine is not just any restaurant- it serves high tea. However, this is not the Queen of whatnot, British accent, stick-your-pinky-out-when-you're-holding-the-teacup kind of high tea - it's authentic Dutch high tea. And it's incredible). Anyway, wanting to "go big or go home", we ordered the "High Tea Luxe". Another piece of advice is to not eat much before you come to Gartine - it's probably good to be pretty hungry when you come in - this definitely isn't a dainty little snack. We definitely left having eaten all we could have. When we ordered, we had forgotten to choose our tea flavor, so our very nice waitress, who also happened to be a co-owner of the restaurant, recommended a couple of options to us. I went with a fruit and herbal tea, the exact name of which I cannot recall, and it was incredible. It was so soothing and refreshing. The first course that came with the "High Tea Luxe" was probably my personal favorite, although they were all unforgettable and unique - it was a soup made from chicory, saffron, and truffle. It was warm and perfect for the drizzly day that it was. Crowds of tourists may have been walking outside in rain ponchos with umbrellas, bright lights of retail shops may have been flashing across the cobblestone street, and it may have been pouring, but in Gartine all we had to do was relax, enjoy the intricately prepared food, and eagerly await the next dish once we were finished. The soup was a perfect example of the homeliness and security Gartine offered even in a busy city. I should also mention that Gartine prepares all of its food using fresh, organic ingredients from their garden just outside of the city of Amsterdam. Anyway, the next dish consisted of three different sandwiches - a savory cake complete with hummus and asparagus, a smoked salmon and lettuce sandwich on crunchy yet fluffy bread, and a sandwich with homemade cheese with nettle and homemade berry jam. Each was equally delicious, with unique combinations of sweet and savory. The bread for each sandwich was different, which emphasized the uniqueness and individualistic characteristics and ingredients of each one. The final dish consisted of lavender lemonade with a scoop of homemade blackberry sorbet submerged in the liquid, in addition to a series of various beautiful cakes. I was a little full at this point so didn't completely finish everything, but I can tell you that the lemonade was exceedingly rich and refreshing, and the cakes were each incredibly tasty. They were all different flavors, including white chocolate mint, lemon, dark chocolate, and coconut. I didn't have room for much, but my comrade did and could tell me that they were all obviously intricately prepared, rich, and flavorful. Based on looks, they could have belonged on the cover of the magazine. Once finished, we left the comfort of the magical world of Gartine and set out home in the rain, but the experience remained a fresh and prominent memory. Anyways, I highly recommend Gartine, if you couldn't tell. Thanks for tolerating my exceedingly long review - I promise I don't usually write this much, this one was just extremely deserving. read more
