What a great bacon cheeseburger. I was told to try this place many times and we finally made it. We decided to split it and I'm glad we did. It was a half pound of deliciousness. We added the fries that are thick cut. Though the place was very slow at the time we were glad it was well staffed and ready to please. Our waitress was prompt and stopped by to check on us several times. The outdoor design was awesome. With different seating options and a bonfire pit with corn hole nearby. My husband and I always split the special Gar Burger, they are amazingly delicious, and huge. Side portions are huge and meant to be shared (fries or tots) as well. Bacon on the burgers are thick and crispy. They come with a side of dill pickles. We love to sit outside on the front patio, they do have a back patio as well which we have never sat at. Inside is a cool dive bar type. They are well known by locals and others for the best burgers anywhere in the thumb! They also have large affordable beers. And they give you free popcorn when you arrive. Don't be in a rush, burgers are thick and are cooked to order, so it does take a little bit. Why yes, we did come all this way just for their burgers! And it was worth it! We didn't have much to do and we are trying to make the best of the surrounding area. So why not take a trip to marine City? Oddly this isn't that far from my house. I actually grew up as marine city being a second home to me. It's fun to go through town and enjoy the nostalgia. We started off heading east on 23. We wanted to hit some of the restaurants on the water. Unfortunately, we forgot that a lot of places are closed on Mondays in this covid era. , We worried that this trip was going to be a busy but we knew this place was open (according to yelp). So we crossed our fingers and headed inside. I was rather surprised at first. This place is on the "best burgers in Michigan" list. I kind of expected more. It was fairly dark and small. Seemed like more of a dive bar. We sat at the bar and ordered our drinks. As we were looking over the menu, someone came in and said they were going to sit on the patio. We both perked up. It was 76 degrees out in November. We are right off the water. Why are we inside? So we moved to the patio. Ahh much better. He was drinking rum and diet coke but I was driving so just had water. But then the guy behind me ordered this enormous beer. His eyes got very big so we figure he needed one. 32 ounces of Amberbock plus several rum and diets had him giggling. Lol! Any way, we came for the burgers and they did not disappoint! He ordered their specialty burger which had cheese and mushrooms. I ordered a bacon burger with blue cheese. If you follow me then you know that I will eat bacon and blue cheese on anything or even with nothing else. It's my favorite. Well holy smokes! The burgers were huge! And they did not skimp on the toppings. I took the bun off and ate it fork and knife style. I could only eat half. We shared a side of fries but each of us only had a few. We then headed back. We were looking forward to eating lunch here. That was our first mistake. The second was after 20 minutes politely asking if our order would be ready soon? Instead of a polite response that our food would be up soon, the bartender/waitress snapped at my wife about how long it takes to overcook a hamburger. The third mistake was asking for the bill and having it slapped down on our table. Our best decision was leave and to try to forget about the filthy tables, average food and unwelcome service. Oh, and the point of eating at Gar's is the great (?) hamburger's . The hamburgers are OK but don't get excited. They are overpriced, overcooked unfortunately a waste a waste of good meat. The fries are average frozen potato steak fries, save your money and skip them. Sadly there's more - the fish sandwich was horrible! Over breaded, dry and tough. The coleslaw had that disturbing slight metallic aftertaste that makes you nervous about eating it. It seems that the only thing that is actually made at Gar's are the hamburgers. Everything else is frozen or delivered in five gallon jugs. If you must eat here, temper your expectations and order a hamburger. Request it to be medium or it will be over cooked. Skip the side orders and avoid the coleslaw! As for the vibe and the service - unless you are lost or ran out of gas late at night in Marine City do yourself a favor and avoid Gar's Lounge. Gar's was one of the only places available to eat on Labor Day. We thought we would give it a try. The wait staff was certainly overwhelmed by the rush of business. Tables weren't cleared on the front patio but we were able to sit on the back patio. It was very dark inside which gives it more of a pub feel. The bees were swarming the entire time we were there. I was surprised that there were no deterrent things since it was a large patio. We had to wait awhile for our food but the kitchen staff did bring it out. The food tasted great but it was hard to enjoy while swatting away yellow jackets. I might give it another try and sit inside but then would be weighing out the noise. read more

This is the second time I had the ham & cheese sandwich at Gar's. It was very good! Two different cheeses and thick, warmed Polish ham. Gar's also has great burgers and they are huge!! The French fries portions are also huge, so you can definitely split an order between two people. In the spring and summer, you can sit on the patio which parallels Water Street, watching passers by and other activity. The best part is by evening, you are in full shade. I really wanted to like this place because I heard the food was so good! I had the traditional burger which was not outstanding. It was actually way lower than my expectations. Mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. was all "an extra charge". The onion rings were really good but the drinks were a very weak pour and the wine was "old". I realize this is kind of a shot 'n beer joint so there's probably not a call for wine very often. Atmosphere was "neighborhood charm" and the staff was friendly but I am disappointed in the food. The Friday fish is amazing. There's more to this restaurant/bar Everything is good at Gar's. Even the pop is fresh unlike most bars that serve flat pop there's is great. The service is friendly and nice. Outdoor seating as well. If the street parking is full there is parking behind the restaurant. Last night we went there, and it was an absolute disaster. The waitress (straight black hair) came to our table with an attitude right out of the gate saying I have tables on the other side so there is going to be a wait. She brought my beer and I asked for a lime, she said you are going to have to wait I have other tables. We ordered our food and when my wife asked if they had ranch for her salad she barked out "NO". She came back to the table to see if we wanted refills, and I wasn't quite ready, so I said not just yet. Her reply, "well then you are going to have to wait when you do because I have other tables". We got our food after an hour wait or I should say part of our food. The couple we were with got theirs, but my wife and I did not. The server said let me check, she came back and said they gave my wife's salad to someone else and they forgot my burger! After we got our food the waitress never apologized and never asked how our food was. My friend only ate half his burger because it was charred when he ordered it medium. We were in there for nearly two hours for burgers and a salad. I have never experienced a waitress with such an attitude and such lousy service. We drove almost an hour to get there because we heard great things, what a mistake. The drive home seemed two hours! Even if you are short staffed or the kitchen is backed up it is not the customer's problem and does not deserve an attitude and for sure does not need to hear about it. The best part of the night the food server was apologetic and pleasant, maybe management should reverse their roles! read more

Returned to Gar's after not having been in over a decade. We went for the AYCE Fish & Chips on Friday. 5 stars for the value! There were two of us and we received huge baskets of fish and fries, as well as a large bowl of coleslaw. There was enough food for two more people. We didn't need to order seconds! That said, the fish was fried in what was clearly old oil. The fryer oil needed to be changed. The only flavour was grease and old oil. We took most of it home. After popping it in the oven and seasoning it a bit, the fish improved enough to be edible. Service was good, but the staff all appeared disheveled and sloppy. read more

Up for a cleansing swim in Marine City and walked Main Street, immediately saw Gar's and knew this was the place for us... The name says it all GARS... Our bartender Jess was lovely. She had great energy... She ran around like a seasoned pro, answering phones and waiting on everyone, quickly and effectively... Had a Corona and a shot of Cuervo, like a true champ does on a day trip, followed by a handsome serving of fried pickle spears... cooked to perfection. My dad had the Cheeseburger which he said was thick and juicy. I could tell he was satisfied when I saw him slap his pappy afterward... by the way they give you a free bowl of popcorn at the bar... I ate here on a whim around 11:30 AM on a Monday and was served one of the best hamburgers I have ever eaten in my life. Seriously. I usually do not type such hyperbole, but this was really great. Reasons why? Let me count the ways: 1. A hand-formed 1/2 pound slab of burger meat. 2. Fresh quality beef with a roasted taste, like prime rib mixed w/ sirloin. 3. Perfect dark-grilled scawl to the meat. Juicy too. 4. Crispy cold lettuce, tomato and onion on the side. 5. Cheese that's actually melted on the burger. 6. Once assembled it was the height of a phone book. 7. Taste, taste, taste. And then some more taste. Not rocket science, is it? A good burger is so simple, it's hard. It was certainly the Grill of the Gods the day I ate. The only thing that would have improved the burger would be changing the regular white bread bun with a softer brioche-like bun, perhaps throwing in some double-cheese. That would make the Gar Burger a perfect 10 in my book. As is, it's 9.5. The only hamburger that compares in terms of quality beef taste is the RedCoat Tavern in Royal Oak, however, their burger is smaller, more expensive, and you gotta deal with the arrogance and overcrowding of Royal Oak. The plank style french fries appeared frozen, however, they were delicious and cooked a perfect golden brown. The basket was gigantic in portion. Unless you eat like a manatee, one basket of fries will serve two people. Overall, the prices are very reasonable for the portions and quality served. INTERIOR: Gar's Lounge has been in downtown Marine City forever. The ambience is dive-bar meets musty nautical. The bar side dining area is dark brown and dingy. There is a brighter and more family-oriented room behind the bar. The bathrooms are small and gross. On the weekend, it's full of suburban Harley people. Fussy types should go elsewhere. TRIVIA: Local folks say Ford Motor Company fired CEO Lee Iaccoca at Gar's Lounge in July 1978 during a business lunch. read more

Burger and a brew place. Popped in Sunday evening for a quick bite. Forgot that the burgers only come in size "huge". I didn't request a toasted bun, and I felt the bread was a bit soggy. They were out of American Cheese and we had to ask to sub cheddar. The bacon could have been cooked a bit more. The fries were perfect, the 2 other deep fried apps: (cauliflower and cheese bites) were bar joint great. My friend didn't like the slightly greasy refillable ketchup bottle and the place wasn't dirty, but not immaculate. My beer glass was a bit foamy but the price can't be beat. It's not a "lounge" but a local watering hole. The bar area is dark and doesn't give a very welcoming feel. The side room is more comfortable, bright, and feels cleaner. I've had mixed service in the past, but it was great last week. There is outdoor full service seating for warm weather, but FYI it is oversized picnic tables. Don't come for fancy, come for great local grub and cheap beer. Minimal water view but the river is right across the street for freighter watching. read more

Had lunch there today, January 20, 2023. We had been advised my regulars to get a burger. We were treating our realtor, so we all ordered cheeseburgers, and split a regular order of fries. Previous reviews have been spot on, the burgers are HUGE! Listed @ 1/2 pound but seem way bigger. Glad they served them cut in half, cuz a person can only do 1/2 at a time. We took two halves and 70% of the fries home. The servers are obviously used to handing out take-home boxes. Above all, THE FOOD WAS SUPER!!! We came over from East Lansing shopping for real estate. First let me say, my opinion and (subsequent rating) is being given a 3 because I'm rating the in-house experience vs. the carry out experience. In house I would rate as a 4.5. The staff is very attentive, helpful, and informative. The quality of everything we've ever ordered has been outstanding and the portions are over the top. We ordered take out tonight for the first time and were so disappointed at the difference in quality and service. I would rate carry out as 1 My burger was so under cooked...literally bright pink, the bun was not toasted leaving the burger so soggy it was texturally unappealing as well. Well we were a little disappointed. The server chastised my husband after he asked to know what kind of soft drinks they offered. She says Coke products. So my husband says I'll have a root beer. She says I never said we have root beer. So then my husband asks for an orange pop. She says I told you what we had and we don't have orange. Very snarky too. I was Giotto jump in and say Coke products have a root beer and orange pop but I didn't want to be told off. Kind of not very nice. Then she was trying to be nicer when she brought our food. Our burgers were way over cooked that they were very dry. I ordered lettuce tomato and Mayo with mine and I didn't get the Mayo so I asked her for it and she said it's always on the side of the basket. I had to prove it wasn't included there. Maybe she was having a bad day but after all we weren't being rude so there wasn't any reason for her to start off that way. Leave it to my dad... "They have burgers the size of your head!" That tells me right away they probably suck. I didn't want to go, but he almost literally forced me to go, for God knows the reason. Came in at five on a Friday before they got really busy. It took about 40 minutes to get a burger, and it wasn't even that great. It was just a mound of meat with seemingly no seasoning, and canned mushrooms. They throw a few bits of onion and pickle on the plate with it, but this is one mediocre burger. On top of that, they put the burger on a piece of store bought white bread, basically, which is an awful choice. The burger's so soft that the meat pretty much slides right out when you pick it up. On the plus side, a half pound burger is about $7, so it IS a good value. Thing is, I like my burgers to have flavor. I don't care for condiments on my burger a lot of the time anymore, but I almost needed it on this bland, boring burger. Pass. The prices are decent, but the wait was too long for a single burger that was ordered before the people piled in. I might like it a little more if I lived in the area, but there are better options near me. Hey, at least you get complimentary popcorn. I could have put that on the burger to give it more flavor now that I think about it... damn.
