Cool place for the 4H afterschool program for school aged kids. Participated as staff/aid many years ago.

It was a bit weird to be strolling along and suddenly see gates marked with warnings against trespassing. That being said, if you stick close to the river it shouldn't be an issue. This is a lovely looking area, made oddly more fascinating by the nuclear smokestacks that are within eyesight on the river. On the off season you can walk out on to the ferry dock and get a full view of the Delaware River in all it's glory, if you can call it that. The paths in this park aren't very long, but it is a pleasant stroll from one end to the other. It's also a very dog friendly park, so I felt very out of the loop being the only person without a dog on a leash the day I went! The old gun batteries are interesting and hauntingly beautiful in the way that abandoned man-made structures usually are. Some portions are in greater disrepair than others, but the majority seem safe enough for exploring. If you're a history buff this would be a great way to spend an afternoon. Fort Mott is not your average park, and it's not even your average historical site. There's something about it that sticks with you. I found my mind wandering back to the landscape I encountered there in the week after my visit. Even though I never felt in danger, there's something a little unsettling about this place. That, as well as it's short trails, are what keep it from getting a perfect score from me. However, if you're in the area, I do recommend stopping by. At the very least you'll get a history lesson.

Before this trail existed in New Castle, there once was railroad tracks and a train that would come along once in a while. "The tracks" as we called them, was our byway to school or Old New Castle. Long gone is the train and "the tracks" but what lies in its wake is a paved trail. This trail is roughly 10 miles round trip and runs from Old New Castle to Wilmington. On a fall day, my wife and I decided to walk this trail. We started in Old New Castle at New Castle Elementary School. The beauty of the Fall enhanced the trail. You immediately are walking through wetlands. After the wetlands, the course is sandwiched between Jefferson Farms (were I lived growing up) and Manor Gardens. The course then goes through an industrial park and crosses over Boulden Blvd and past Suburban Little League. After the baseball field, you go past Wilmington Manor before It runs under a couple of I-95 bridges, you pass the women's prison and the Delaware State Hospital. There is a nice pedestrian bridge that crosses over the Christina River and leads into more wetlands. Finally, the course ends at the DuPont Environmental Station. By this point, you are at the Wilmington Riverfront. After all this walking we grabbed a bite to eat before heading back down the trail. All in all, this is a great trail for walking, running, or biking.

With $26M the…read morecity created a storm water management system that also offers wildlife a spot to dwell, and a pedestrian/cyclist recreational path. There is limited parking off of S Walnut Street on one end, and a larger parking lot on the access road that runs off of A Street on the other end. But currently Google Maps takes you to a corporate center adjacent along the side of the park, but separated by fencing with absolutely no access to this park, and is a huge waste of time. My best advice is to use the address for the Shell Station nextdoor; I put the station's address in tips for this listing. There is also no signage and I'd never know it was there if I hadn't set out to hunt it down. Honestly, I don't think it's a priority to make this spot known because it really isn't much of a destination, and I don't think it's safe. Not much of a destination: I was a disappointed to find there is a short path through the small patch of marsh, and that's it. I clocked path length at 0.36 miles. This "park" is basically just a pass-through to get from housing at one end to the ShopRite at the other end. The path is gravel, so not meant for skating size wheels, but bikes and jogging strollers can handle it. That said, this is not a very safe area, and at least at this time, I do not recommend visiting to hang out. Not very safe: I visited in the middle of a sunny weekday alone with my child. From all I'd read online this was a recently-opened park, that was an engineering feat, and a huge environmental help to the city water management. I am not a Wilmington native so I don't know one part of town from another. I did find it odd that when I was misdirected to the corporate office building nextdoor, there were no access trails from their parking lot to allow employees to get exercise on lunch hour. Then, I noticed litter and random destruction along this brand new $26M trail, which was alarming considering the wildlife trying to inhabit it (geese, ducks, a heron, etc). There was an entire SHOPPING CART from the nearby ShopRite, that had been thrown in the marsh. Ew! Why? Last, the neighborhood at the end of the trail did not appear safe. I began to get anxious after waking the length of the trail. It was not a long trail, but I had my preschooler with me, and I was vulnerable if approached by anyone. A man from the housing unit at the far end began waking down the trail. He was smoking something I believe to be pretty extreme, and kept eyeing me and my child. I always give people the benefit of the doubt but I also trust my instincts, and this felt like a negative vibe. Unbelievably, just as I began to worry, a Wilmington police officer came walking down the trail. He made eye contact with me and the other man, and let us know he was on top of our actions. It was a big relief, though I didn't feel completely safe again until my child and I were driving home. I am grateful to that officer for patrolling the area. So while I'm happy for this use of space for environmental improvements, and flood safety for nearby residents, I'm sad and sorry people don't take better care of it's cleanliness for the sake of themselves and the wildlife living there. Unfortunately, just weeks after opening, they already need a clean up crew to remove all the litter. I definitely do not recommend this as a destination for people seeking a park experience. Try DuPont Environmental Education Center nearby; it's fantastic!

Intro to Rock Climbing with Valley to Summit on September 18, 2022…read more This was my second trip to Chickies Rock with VTS and it was wonderful! There were only 5 of us, so plenty of time to climb. Our Guide, Bob, was so patient, engaged and informative. I learned a lot of great things that I had not known before about clothing, ropes and technique. Bob was so patient with me and was there with his " green pointer" to help me over the tough spots. You should know that I am 74 years old and tho I have climbed indoors for a few years, my stamina was not that of the youngsters who were there! Nonetheless, it was a great time! I highly recommend Valley to Summit, this being my 3 rd trip with them. They Rock!

He asked a few questions, then determined that it should be OK for me to go on the hike. Shortly before the hike we received an email from Dave saying that because of the warm weather the trip would not have as much ice as it normally does. He offered to reschedule or refund our money if we wanted, but also said we could go if we wanted. We wanted. When I got there Dave and the guides were fantastic. Very personable. They were helpful but without being intrusive. One of them carried one of my forearm canes in his backpack in case I needed it. (This was to have one hand free for the ice axe.) The hike was great. At the end of the hike I asked one of the guides if he thought I could do the repelling they offer... he conferred with the owner and the lead repeller guide, and they agreed that I would be allowed to do that in the Spring. I highly recommend Valley to Summit for a great time. I look forward to a full day ice hike in February.
