    Dinner in America Q&A 01/30/26
    Tamara T.

Found out about this cinema via an Instagram post last year that said the Circle Jerks were performing here after a screening of the film Repo Man and I almost bought a ticket but couldn't make it. This theater was on my radar since then and on Thursday a friend posted on her story that they were screening Dinner in America with a Q&A with the writer/director and producer and later, Emily Skeggs!! I got a ticket so fast and pushed my concert plans to the side for this. I saw Dinner in America for the first time, last year after the Kanopy app randomly recommended it to me. I watched it and loved this film so much, but when I found out it came out in 2020, I was bummed I'd never get to see it on the big screen. Thanks to Gardena Cinema I was able to see it with a sea of people and not just alone on my phone 29 times. While we were waiting for the film to start, the owner came up to the mic and talked about the history of the theater and how her family came to own it after immigrating to the U.S. in the 70's. Yesterday was the national shutdown strike, but honestly it's hard on small businesses everywhere and I saw so many of these businesses say they were staying open and supporting in one way or another. Judy did the same and gave an impromptu moving talk about what's going on in the world and why it was important to still go on with the screening of this film; because it's punk as fuck! I love this film down BAD because it is exactly that and more. This film is my Heated Rivalry for real. Getting here was easy from the O.C. and parking was a dream!! There's a big parking lot connected to the theater and it's free. I love the multi colored letters of the marquee out front as it really stands out against the background of the city. Inside it's a small lobby then straight into the 1 theater. I was shocked at how far back the seating goes. Other small art house theaters it's not that big inside but here there's so much seating. The seats are small though, like from the 1940's small, but I was able to sit comfortably the whole film. I stayed for the Q&A and was able to ask one question about the soundtrack and release of the Psyops songs and found out it was in the works. Emily Skeggs said hi to me as I was about to ask my question and I was done. After that, I like teared up for some weird reason. It was such a great evening and hearing Judy's story and that this theater is run completely by volunteers was so heartwarming. These theaters are so special to me because they show the cult films and are able to bring out the cast and crew for Q&A which is something you don't get at chain theaters. I genuinely will make an effort to support art house cinemas this year and in particular Gardena Cinema because it is punk AF!

There's something magical about watching a film in a spot that hasn't been swallowed by chain-theater sameness. No $12 artisanal water, no confusing "premium" seat pricing, just pure old-school vibes. The screen lights up, the room goes dark, and suddenly you remember why you fell in love with movies in the first place. The seats might not recline like a La-Z-Boy, but honestly, that's part of the charm. I came here for the movie, not a nap.

This has got to be my favorite local theater maybe theater in general! Love the environment, love the people, love the vibes. Their soda machine is on crack bc it spits out delicious Diet Cokes I recently attended the screening of Dinner in America with a moderated Q&A afterwards with the director, producer, and a star of the movie! Turned out even some of the crew was in the audience so it really was such a special treat-- I cried SO MANY TIMES.

This place is a gem! It has been owned by the same family for almost 50 years, but has actually been in business for almost 80! I come from a small town and love the warmth and crunch of a local-owned movie theatre. I went with a friend who used to work at a theatre like this and we were all for the adventure. Plus the cinema was showing a special documentary Ryse Up Documentary, a film about Ryse Williams, about a local guy, so it would be a special and touching evening - and it was! First of all, follow their social media to see what cool events are coming up! That is how we heard about this screening. It was easy to buy tickets online, and super easy to check in at the box office having done so. We parked in free parking, walked in, there was a volunteer greeter who was super friendly and read my tarot cards! The line for food and drinks was quick. I got a large popcorn and a drink. I think next time I will get a hot dog and nachos because they looked amazing! They had tons of extra stuff that you can sprinkle on your popcorn from tajin to cheese popcorn flavors. They also had a wide range of condiments for the dogs. I loved the view from the lobby past the cushioned door and into the rows of seats! There are so many rows of seats plus it had seats up front facing the audience for the events they hold. This screening was having a Q&A with the director. We walked in and got our seats. I was almost disappointed that the floors were not stickier and the seats were not dustier! Since this was a special event there were no previews. Just an introduction and we went right into the beautiful documentary about a shining local son. Being surrounded by his friends and family made it even more touching. After the film there was a Q&A where we learned more about the documentarian's connection to Ryse, the film making process, and where the documentary will go next. What a special and emotional evening! Let's help these guys get to their big anniversary next year! They breathe new life into your favorite films, host themed weekends, they have events with Oscar-nominated films where the director comes and speaks. They also support the art of cinema through projects like this documentary or the Movie Screeners club where filmmakers get to screen their project for an audience and get feedback. They have fun memorabilia on their eBay page (I've bought a few scripts to read). Make it a goal to go at least once, and I feel like you may get hooked!

This place is so reminiscent of a time when going out to the movies on the weekend was an experience. Doesn't look like much from the outside. It actually looks old and beat up. The same goes for the part of the city it's located in. I was invited to a showing of a low budget, independent film, so I wasn't expecting much. Tickets were purchased online prior and shown at the box office window. When I walked in through the door, I thought to myself, "What the?" The concession stand is old school small. They even have a payphone that looks like it still works, although I didn't pick up the receiver to see if I could hear a dial tone or not. I also noticed numerous plastic baskets of free VHS and DVD movies. It wasn't until I walked into the theater that I said to myself, "Oh wow, so many seats!" Note, seats are old school, not as padded as we've gotten used to. The night was an experience for certain. The filmmaker had a band play before the movie. Their set was over an hour. It wasn't a private showing, so I got a kick out of observing the elderly Asian couple who most likely comes and watches a movie every weekend. So, if you're interested in seeing an old movie, like "Psycho," a blockbuster from the '80's, or something weird from the '70's, this is the place to come because they're showing it. It's a privately owned theater. The owners are trying to keep a piece of history alive. Parking: They have their own free parking lot right next to the theater. There is also plenty of free, street parking.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Paul and Judy, who owns Gardena Cinema, last night as we entered a new year. I have been wanting to catch a show here for quite a long time now and finally got the opportunity to do so. This Cinema, such a wonderful time capsule for all things good that theaters bring, is run by such loving and passionate people and makes you feel at home. You'll first be greeted by a glowing concession stand with everything you'd want at an AMC. Looks can be deceiving as this cinema is much larger inside than it appears from the street! The screen is great, and audio encapsulating. The seats were a concern of ours, but to our surprise we were comfortable even after a 5 hr long double feature. If you are to have any goals for 2026, be sure visiting Gardena Cinema is at the top of your list. (p.s. they have their own parking lot !) !! Support Independent Theaters !!

Went to see "Army of Darkness " here on 10/19/25. First time here. If you love the old school, single screen movie theater experience, this place is amazing. Just reminds you of what the movie theater experience used to be like. Every staff member I encountered was great and friendly. Plus FREE parking. Can't beat it.

I remember, vaguely in detail, but clearly in broadness, that I saw an episode of Reading Rainbow…read more In this episode the main character goes to a swap meet and is inspired by a book to view a trip to the swap meet as an opportunity to discover treasure. I did not go with a child's optimism to the Roadium, but I did hope to find oddities to engage my mind, trinkets to admire and imagine about, and in general find something that would be right for me at a bargain price. And the Roadium on a Sunday, provided me the opportunity to find all the previously mentioned items and things, plus it also help me get steps in, in a slow pace, while I absorbed the sun's Vitamin D. I am surprised to say this, like super surprised, but the item that most caught- really arrested- my attention was a picture that centered the country's current sitting president: Trump. In the picture, Trump has his head down, eyes closed, hands and fingers interlocked, and he seems to have a face of meditation, maybe receiving peace and/or knowledge. And behind stand a variety of historical and political powerhouses of the past, like Nixon, Reagan, Washington, Lincoln, and others that I could not recognize to name with confidence. However, all had their eyes closed, and had an aura of tranquility that also carried palpable notes of worry. What struck me the most is that the group, in tense serenity, included men and women of color. It is important to note that I clipped the picture, to give the reader or viewer the opportunity to collect their own thoughts and land their own interpretation. That got heavy. I also clipped a picture of quinceneras. One was dressed in Cinderella blue with a carriage, horse, and carriage handers were in the background, I thought it was A.I. generated but perhaps some people do have quinces like that, in fact I know they do, I used to wacth my Super Sweet Sixteen on MTV. Getting inside the Roadium is hard on a Sunday. But apparently worst on others day because the Roadium has different vendors on different days and each attracts a different type of crowd. For instance, on the firstMonday of the month vendors from the Rose Bowl Flea Market come. Please know that I am recycling information that was provided to me by one of the vendors. Research, please to verify accuracy. However, she also explained that on Mondays, when the Vintage Vendors come, parking becomes nearly imposible to find, even on the street. On this day, it cost 5 dollars, the cashiers only accept cash, The place has trinkets, food, and finds, seriously, it is a cool walk to see, touch, and get lost, if that is something one can do- shop vendors with nothing you want to buy, but still find meaning in the seeing and touching. I had peanuts on this day, but they were special because they were freshly toasted. Like I got a few to try (both extra toasted and not so toasted) and they were still warmed from the machine that toasted them. The touch of a warm shell was enough for me to be impressed but the freshness was key. This vendor explains that sometimes the peanuts in the store are 10 days old, after they were first roasted. Again do research. I saw micro Mexican candy stores with some of the candy that really communicates non-tourist streets of Oaxaca. I also bought three shirts. One was 8, two other ones were three dollars, and I feel like they were honest finds. I took a video of a barbie like doll, not barbie, using a Segway, which I thought was a wink to the modern that made sense yet never seen. I also saw a Spiderman Halloween shirt. And I thought how weird. It was him siting Spidey like, and he was pumpkin orange with bats behind him. It was juvenile because it was Disney product from theri Halloween bash time. So this place does have what was one precious yet never bought. I can see how someone might get something today to use at another day, or simply, be creative and DIY stuff from the stuff they found here.

It is big but unfortunately it was definitely not vintage days. We went on the day that they was designated for vintage days specifically because we weren't really looking for just junk or stuff . We won't be back anytime soon . We got an ice cream cone and one scoop was like eight dollars. They do have some fruit and vegetables, but they were pretty ripe and some of the items canned goods look like things they got left over from maybe a food bank or items they took from a food bank that they didn't use just a lot of stuff that seemed like it had been collected from free stuff left over from a yard sale or I don't even know it was not what I expected. It was my first time I've been wanting to go for years. My sister-in-law hadn't been since she was younger, and my husband hadn't been since he was younger. He said he remembered his mom taking him all the time.

Another little side note it says on your ticket stub but it's a shame this is what it has come to that you need 45-1hr of advertisements before your movie starts no wonder so many people came in a few minutes before the Actual movie started.. Next time we're coming later.. the Movie was Great, the sound was pretty amazing and we had a good time with friends.

Parking's pretty decent in the covered parking lot next door, and the service is good! I watch several movies here every year, and it's just a really good theater. Popcorn is fresh and hot. Drink machines are always working. Bathrooms are pretty clean, at least on the men's side. Paper towels and toilet paper, your basics are always there. I haven't read any of the other reviews, but I don't see why this theater isn't rated higher. I've always had a good time while I'm here. Five stars!

Review #957 2026-021…read more Fantasia Family Music: Director: Susan Brown Technical Director: Evan Brown Parking: free public lot (enter from 11th Pl., lot is on right past Alano Club & Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library) My son's saber fencing buddy, AK, invited us to see his 1st performance with Fantasia Family Music as the "March Hare" (Act 2, Scene 7: Mad Tea Party) at the Hermosa Beach Community Theatre. He's been in other performances elsewhere. His dad is a musician, so maybe that's an inspiration for his creative arts passion? We arrived early, but wasn't aware of the free lot in the back (though it was likely full for the performance or taken up by tennis players) until after the show. We spent the next 20-mins. circling around & around, hoping someone would leave a street parking spot. We finally found a free spot on 9th St. off Ardmore Ave., by the time we arrived, we missed 15-mins. of the show. Aaaugh! We didn't have the playbill so I wasn't sure if we missed his friend's initial queue (luckily he wasn't on until after intermission). It was quite obvious after a few minutes that the kids' performance caliber was top notch!! I just wished we would have made it on time to watch the opening curtain/beginning! \(`0´)/ It was only $20/ticket, that I wouldn't mind a repeat but this was the last show. I'm somewhat familiar with the story, but it's been decades since I read the book. All the scenes were marvelous (though we missed the Prologue & Scene 1 so can't comment on that), but the Mad Tea Party's Unbirthday & I'm Late reprise (Scene 7... yeah, I'm biased because of our friend), Seeing Red's Painting the Roses Red & Simon Says (Scene 8; "Simon Says" replaced the croquet tournament story in the book) were standout scenes. I particularly loved the Cheshire Cat 1; she really hammed it & made it her own IMO. I found out after the show that she's a fellow student at HES with my son, & also discovered his 4th grade classmate was in the play as the King of Hearts. We sat in the back & couldn't see (their faces) very well. Fantasia Family Music really put on a fantabulous production! They're South Bay's original student led performing arts organization that's nonprofit & dedicated to youth theater. I loved that they're inclusive of all who are interested in the creative arts regardless of skill level or prior experience. If there were newbies with the "bug" to perform, it wasn't noticeable because every performer were immersed in his/her role. Several performer parents played a part in the theatre crew as backstage crew & make-up assistants to help ensure success. Hermosa Beach Community Theatre is 502-seat theater that's located east of the Hermosa Beach Community Center, often used by youth musical theatre groups, dance productions, & other variety shows for local residents to experience the joys of cultural arts. It has a spacious stage to hold a large number of performers, box office, decent lobby area (hang out with the performers after the show), & restrooms (around the corner of the box office). There's a couple of stalls & sinks in the women's restroom so hold the liquids, especially if it's a packed house! According to other reviewers, there's a concession stand (wasn't available for this play); I'm assuming you can eat & drink in the lobby, or just outside of the theater during intermission. The City of Hermosa Beach/Community Theatre has a Monthly Calendar (https://www.hermosabeach.gov/our-government/recreation-community-resources/community-theatre) to see what's current for that month. I didn't grow up going to the theatre or had any interest in "acting"performing (though I did sing 3 years as a soprano in chorus & played the violin in orchestra in elementary school, earning 1st chair in a few performances). But I love the Hermosa Beach Community Theatre for their affordable tickets to local, nonprofit, & youth-focused productions! Curiouser & curiouser... I would definitely come back again! Wouldn't you?

It's the perfect venue for plays and dance recitals, with plenty of seating to accommodate a large audience. They have a box office, a concession area, and a surprisingly spacious stage! The play I saw was Beauty and the Beast, and it was absolutely adorable. You could really tell the children put in a lot of hard work. Parking was convenient, with both a lot and street parking options available.
