Oh wow, I didn't know this place exist here at Hilo town. While at the Hilo Farmer's Market , I met a lady at one of the booth and she recommended Garden Exchange. I was on the hunt for Culantro plant for my mom. We searched all over while shopping for veggie plants back on Oahu. Excited, I asked my hubby to take me to the Garden Exchange, I could have walked over but didn't know it was so close by, one street over from the Farmer's Market. FYI- Parking is located on the other side/back of Garden Exchange not on the main street. I asked a kind staff to guide me to where the Culantro were and killed 2 birds with one stone, I also asked if they have any Hoya plants. I loved looking at the plant selection they have. I ended up with 2 Culantro and came across a beautiful Hoya plant on trellis and for such a great price, I had to get it. Happy with my Hoya plant and culantro for my momma during this visit. I wasn't sure if it would clear agriculture inspection back at the airport, but glad it did. Not sure why the low ratings but I loved my first time visit, I LOVE plants, staff that helped me were all so friendly. Garden Exchange is a well established gardening store, located in Hilo with history dating back to 1964. Make a stop here for your garden needs, super huge store! Keep in mind, Plants are All Sales Final!! I hope there will be more Hoya and hope they have more selections when I visit again. read more

I'm fairly amazed at some of these reviews. For plants this is one of the greatest nurseries I have ever been. The prices are incredible, I bought a variegated monstera for $70 that on eBay would have easily been $200+. The people who work there are knowledgeable, kind and helpful. read more

So, went in a couple of weeks ago. We had been in the day before to see what options they had for rare banana types... We were willing to spend some money, knowing that The Garden Exchange is notoriously expensive, even for Hawaii - but sometimes they have decent quality things. I have spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, purchasing supplies for my orchids, but this was a special purchase - something personal. We found a variegated Florida variegated banana plant ($250!) for a single growth...but that wasn't the issue really. We'd pay it. It was what we were looking for to commemorate a lost friend. The issue was that when we walked in, 30 minutes before closing, we were met with a front desk staff that had no qualms about telling us "you have 5 minutes" in a not friendly tone. We went to the live plant section outside, found the division that we wanted, and as we turned around, the shorter older gentleman who is ALWAYS there was watching us with a disapproving eye - I don't know if it was that he wanted to go home and pop a beer open and not worry about customer service anymore, or if he thought we were going to chuck a banana plant over the barbed wire 15 foot fence and abscond with it ...regardless, we bought the plant, commented to each other on how awkward and frustrating the very fast, very simple, very benign purchase was and how we were met with completely absent service and even scorn. Given what we spent in the 5 minutes we were "allowed," I don't think I'll spend even $5 there again. Head to Puna nurseries or ones up the Hamakua Coast - or even Walmart (ugh, did I say that?). At least you might get a smile there and won't have to deal with the horrible looks and funding the behavior we encountered. read more

Just a note - traveled from the west side to the east to check out the foliage (Which is great btw ), BUT the hours of operation are not correct. I did bring it to the attention of the staff who did not know how to change it on Yelp. They are open on the weekdays until 4:30p NOT 5p. Always a "I don't care and I am irritated" vibe from most employees. The family business charges outrageously high prices A pond liner in the same size and thickness was 1/3 the price on Amazon. I don't like being ripped off from local stores. The power equipment part of the store is the worst. They will not return your calls because they don't care about you or that you spent $500 on a weed wacker...you are just a problem for asking questions. I was in the market for a weed eater and the people here were very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They changed out the factory head for the upgraded one I had purchased. They walked me thru all of the ins and outs of using it. They even filed the warranty online for me so I didn't have to do it. In my opinion, they went above and beyond and this is something you don't get at a regular big box store. On top of that, they have super great deals on plants and we frequently purchase plants from them. read more

These folks have been around long before Home Depot and the kind. They sell the best lawn and garden equipment around along with other related items. They are not cheap price wise but you get what you pay for. If you need work on a lawnmower or other equipment they are the place to go. read more

This is solely based off their plant nursery section. Reading some reviews on the tool repairs but I don't know about that sooo I'll just pretend I didn't see it. They have a lot of unique plants ranging from Native/Endemic Hawaiian, Aquatic, Fruits, Vegetables, Succulents/Cacti, Hanging, Orchids, etc. A LOT of plants to choose from and always new additions every week. Tammy is very helpful and knowledgeable about plants, Carol is just a doll and so sweet. Cody is very knowledgeable about plant pests and diseases. There's a lot to list so instead reading a long series of things just go there and give them a visit. read more

This review is for the Stihl power equipment side of the business. They charged me almost $100 to fix a saw, the repair was so bad the saw stopped running after 2 minutes of use. They refused to fix it after the problem saying new parts were needed for additional costs, or I could bring it back to have the work they did "stripped out" for a refund minus the deposit they required that was not refundable. It took them over two weeks to finish the "repair" that never worked, requiring four calls with lots of "stonewalling." Good luck with Steve's Honda, the other Stihl dealer in town - they are not any better, with bigoted attitude toward non-locals. read more

I love this place, I'm not sure why it only has two and a half stars. The staff are super friendly, the nursery has great plants, small in size but a few of everything. I was looking for Ota avocado and found it here. They didn't have a Tahitian Lime but Tammy offered to order it and call me when it was in. A week later, I got a call! This is an old fashion family run establishment. If you are looking for big box and what comes with big box generics plants and overpriced tools this ain't the place for you. I usually write good reviews so this one is difficult. But my experience was this bad. This is a toro dealer (toro is my next call) I am a svc mgr by trade and the lead mechanic here is the worst in any field I have ever dealt with. I was very polite and patient and he was rude, harsh and quite unrealistic. He yelled at me 'your machine is a piece of crap'. He misdiagnosed my concern twice, saying I was to blame. I tried to explain a drive belt should last more than one mow- again screaming 'you bought sh you get sh'. 'Don't bring your crap here again (because I questioned him). I don't think he likes women questioning him. Both cashiers were very kind and said there hands are tied but that I had been very kind and patient. I have spent almost 1,000 in repairs and had it in there shop almost 6 mon combined on a one year 42" zero turn mower I paid almost 4,000 for. But ok.... It's a pc of crap I guess. I would Never deal with this man. Horrible horrible horrible. read more

Everything from lawn mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, fertilizer, soil, plants, gardening tools, etc... They carry motorized brands such as Shindaiwa, Maruyama, and Stihl. Dependable products for the professional or everyday gardener. The store is located in downtown Hilo on Keawe Street across from downtown Kta. I have purchased products such as weed eaters, fertilizers, weed poison and soil from them. They back up their products, and take the time to explain what each of the items does if you need the advice (like me)!! They need lessons in customer service. A few of their floor people have always been courteous and helpful in store. Today, I called to ask if they had parts for my chainsaw and before I had even finished asking my question the lady says "NO WE DONT." She must've been clairvoyant. In small towns like Hilo, customer service is the only thing separating retail stores from much cheaper online stores....and since this place is lacking in both customer service and fair prices I will do my shopping online from now on. This shop is Ridiculous! They didn't fix my chainsaw.. I spent almost 200 dollars and still not running...The Clerk that wasn't helping me at all...She was telling me that my chainsaw wasn't registered in STHL company...It wasn't my fault...I bought my chainsaw at Steve Honda which is I had a very bad experience with their service also...She ask me a copy of a receipt but I did misplace it and she told me she cant process the repair because my chainsaw is not registered.. That's Bullshit! Poor customer service...I highly DONT recommend this shop for any repairs! They don't fix the problem ask you for money for parts for nothing! I Demand a refund! read more

Garden Exchange is great! I've been in several times and have bought an ulu tree, and a fig tree as well as some terracotta pots. Of course it's not cheaper than Home Depot, but it's LOCAL. Neighbors suggested StIhl brand equipment from Garden Exchange after several months trying to get Steve's Honda to fix the new string trimmer i bought from them. The experience was like night and day. I was greeted when i entered the trimmer area and a knowledgeable saleswoman helped me select the best trimmer for my needs and budget. She asked me lots of questions about the land and what id be using it for, and we went over several options before i decided on my purchase. She was attentive and i felt like she wanted me to get the right tool and not just buy the big $ machine or the model they were trying to push. I then spent about 15 minutes with the repairman who put on a different head and made sure the machine was running. He gave me good advice for where to get gas and also explained that sometimes new stihl trimmers need their cylinders adjusted, so if it ran rough or gave me any problems i should bring it back and it would be a quick fix. 4 days later I ran it for the first time, it felt a little rough so after about 10 minutes i shut it down and gave it a minute to rest while i reviewed the manual. When i tried to restart it the machine wouldn't turn over. Everything seemed ok, so i took it back to garden exchange with some anxiety because of my experience with repairs and service from Steve's honda. When i walked in i didn't see the sales staff but a mechanic called me over to the repair area and asked what was wrong. No wait, no drop off and hope for a phonecall in 2-3 weeks like Steve's. He started taking the cover off while we were talking, i felt like i was in a friends garage rather than a garden store. He checked the spark plug and some other things, told me it would be a couple minutes and i barely had time to wander down the first aisle before i heard my trimmer start up and run. It sounded less rough, he said the cylinders were a little tight but he adjusted them and it seems fine now. That was all. No charge, no paperwork, no hassle, 5 minutes and I was out the door. The trimmer runs like a charm now. My experience with garden exchange has been excellent and I am greatful for the staff's knowledge and friendly service. Guess i should buy my neighbor a beer in thanks as well. read more

We were looking for some plants but they did not have them in stock. However, we spoke to Tammy and she offered to special order them for us and took down the items and our phone number. Usually, when stores do this, there is no call back but to our surprise, she called us back the following week to say she had one of our plants and the other two would be coming later. She offered to hold the first plant until everything came in. The following week, we had our complete order and when down to pick them up. They offer such great service and follow through with what they promise. If you need a special plant that you can not find, please call Tammy to see if she can get them for you. read more

Avoid the disappointment and shop elsewhere. Took in my brand new Toro mower that would not start, and was under warranty. The counter lady told me they would call if there was going to be any charge for the repair. I was called to pick it up after they had "fixed" it, only to find that they charged me. When complaining of the issue, the owner came down and told me that their repair charge policy was clearly posted. He showed me where, and I was dismayed to find it in the very back of the workshop and not visible at all from where I initially dropped off the mower. After complaining to the Better Business Bureau, Garden Exchange responded with blatant lies about the entire transaction to cover their asses. I have never been this disappointed with a company before, and would advise against doing any type of business with such dishonest people. read more

I have always found them to be kind, courteous as well as very informative. I went in recently to their repair center to purchase some parts for my chainsaw. The plants are well cared for, so you don't have to do rehab on them when you get them home. The other merchandise is fairly priced and of excellent quality.
