A few years ago, I had my front and back yards landscaped. That was a difficult move for this…read moreIowan, as where I come from, there's nothing better (and cheaper) than lots of grass and a riding lawn mower. I'm actually very happy with the design, which includes rock walls and terracing in front, a flagstone patio in back, Mediterranean plantings, and drip irrigation. I still remember one admiring person telling me that my garden was a real credit to the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, I don't have much of a green thumb. The practical upshot of that is despite some weeding efforts out in the yard, I need a little gardening help to keep up. About 3 months ago, Christian from Misty Morning Gardens (the guy who installed my original landscaping) cleaned everything up from top to bottom and recommended that Christine from Idora Design for quarterly maintenance. So last week Christine spent a day in my garden and I was very happy with the results. Besides weeding and trimming, she performed some irrigation repair and timing adjustments, and removed some Palin (rogue) plantings. Enter Idora Park Design. Christine, she's the green thumb who runs it, surveyed our yard, surveyed me, surveyed my wife, and came up with this awesome design. It's perfect: It's a design we can implement in stages. It's a design that matches my desire for edibles and natives with my wife's for a meadow. We've got areas for trees, we've got a meadow we've got vegetable boxes, we've got flowers. Everything you could want in a backyard garden! It's true, it's all there. Another great thing: Christine every time I have a plant-related question Christine is like sort of of totally willing to answer it. It helps that she's into natives and I'm into natives. So I'm like, what about a vine for over here? And she's like, here's what I recommend. I'm like, what about this mix of flowers for the flower garden? And she says, yeah! Or, try this one. And the other thing is she's totally flexible. So when I'm like, hey, in my enthusiasm I planted a pomegranate tree over here, even though it wasn't in the plan, and I go to her to get a blessing so I can tell my wife it's okay, I get it! Christine's awesome! Plus her blog is great. So I'm basically like totally psyched, and my wife is like totally psyched, for everything Christine's done for our yard-in-progress. I also had a pretty skimpy budget and needed to comply with the water company's rebate requirements. Tyler created a plan that filled every wish. His finished site plan reflects his extensive plant knowledge and a very fine eye for detail. He is well acquainted with the water rebate program and was able to answer questions thereof. I also used his service to purchase and deliver plants, and have him onsite to place the materials. This service alone is worth every penny; he moved plants and boulders around to the best aesthetic. After everything was complete, he came back for some fine-tuning and recommendations for my gardener. To save money I had my gardener do the installation but really wish I'd had the budget for a more extensive job done by one of Tyler's more experienced contractors. We were seeking ideas for how to make it into a sanctuary--or just improve it so we actually enjoyed spending time outdoors. We'd consulted with 2 landscape designers previously, but weren't happy with what we heard (no compelling ideas unless we were going to spend enough money to buy a second house). Leigh came over for an initial consultation and literally within minutes, she had a vision for what we could do that was super exciting and within our budget.
