Home of Tops Cinema Under the Stars, the Garden Cabaret has been part of the hip happening Mission Hills scene for years (a little shake of sarcasm there.) Seriously though, Mission Hills isn't the most fun community in San Diego if you're under 45 years old. I grew up there. But every now and then, this quiet little neighborhood will surprise you: Phil's BBQ, Lamplighter Karaoke, and this. Every Thursday through Sunday, the GC, under the direction of Doug from Tops salon and Ralph, will show a classic film.
Growing up, it was strictly 50's and 60's fare, sitting in plastic lawn chairs. Since Phil's has grown, the garden closed, then downsized (not sure about the details) then reopened in the fall of 2005. The film has gone DVD, the selection has been updated, and the plastic lawn chairs are now zero-gravity ergonomic chairs. And they have blankets for chilly nights too!
This a really cute, unique spot, and I hope it doesn't close down again. Regulars have been coming for years, and every showing feels like a family gathering. Tickets are $12 a show, and memberships, which get you priority reservations, guests passes, and the best seats in the garden, go for $60 a month.
Please support this awesome establishment. Although I haven't been in a while, it's very dear to my heart. I hope it becomes close to yours too. read more
