Every time I go, I discover a new series and wind up spending way more money than I intended. They have a table set up to the side where people are often playing what I believe is dungeons and dragons? Magic? I don't know, those are my best guesses haha. The staff members are always really helpful and friendly. They also leave me alone while I'm shopping which I appreciate. When I'm picking books I like to take my time and not be bugged. My only criticism (and before you read this I want you to know that I'm aware this is such a stupid thing to complain about haha) is that they are always discussing the newest episodes/movies of things I like and I hear so many spoilers! Like I said, that's kind of a silly thing to complain about but it bugs me!

The negative reviews I've read here seem to expect some kind of big-box-store phony PR campaign from the staff. I think they are mistaking people who are naturally shy or introverted (typical comic book readers?) with being unfriendly or unwilling to help. When I've taken the time to engage with the guys who work here I've had nothing but great experiences, digging through crates to find a certain story arc with my favorite characters, getting recommendations based on other things I've enjoyed, having variant covers set aside until they're ready to go on sale, etc. I'm always greeted by someone at either door when I walk in, and even though they know me by now they always ask if they can help me find anything. I don't know what people are expecting. Complimentary tiramisu? Overall this place is a great regular stop if you're a comic book, tabletop or action figure/memorabilia collector and I strongly disagree with reviews stating that the customer service is lukewarm. If you're comfortable in any other hobbyist shop you'll be comfortable here.

It really could lead to some uncomfortable encounters with staff or patrons simply because of the layout of the store. In addition I was there with a tall person recently and the items hanging from the ceiling hit his head. This is not good in general. It's a very disorganized clutter-filled store. And feels unusually crowded even when not many people are in there. I would much rather patronize other similar stores in Edmonton that do not have quite such a cluttered/unsafe aesthetic. It also took us a LONG time to find a staff member to help us in searching for a comic we were seeking (it was unavailable). It's good that this part of town has comics/games/etc. options for shopping but I really wish that it were more of a friendly place to shop, especially for people who are new to particular hobbies.

But then I turned around, and a set of giant boobs, at least giant in a miniature sense, were staring me right in the face. It was Japanese sexism in woman characters at its best. These were action figures of various characters--I think some of them might have been from video games--that were hyper-sexualized and wearing very little clothing. In fact, in some cases the figures wore no clothing, and only their hands covered the places that separate this from being pornographic. But before I go too much on a feminist rant, I did find some other really cool stuff here. Everything in this store is imported from Asia. I found all this awesome Nintendo merchandise like Mario, Yoshi, and Princess keychains, key-lights, and wallets. I wanted to buy so many of these things, and I'm already thinking about Christmas presents for people (and myself!). They even had a little stuffed doll of Domokun--you know that cute, brown character from that popular poster that says, "Every time you masturbate... God kills a kitten - Please, think of the kittens." I really wanted to buy him, to always remind me not to masturbate. Since I couldn't find it, I asked the sales associate if they had it. He checked with another associate and yes, they had it. They didn't have a dedicated hanger for it and it was behind another product. The packaging looked worn like it had been there for a year, or years. The last time I went, I bought a model paint rack for my husband as a gift. I asked the associate where it was as I thought this would save time than me trying to find it. They only had one left and the box was dented it but it had plastic covering it. The words on the box were written in Japanese but I hoped it wouldn't require much assembly. There always seems to be enough staff available to ask for help, if needed. The prices seem a little high but being in the mall, I would expect a bit of a mark up. I don't think the return policy is great, but then again, they wouldn't want people opening products or using them and then bringing them back. Decent store for those who like models and needs supplies, board games, and anime products.

They have a good stock of boardgames, models and sci-fi/fantasy collectibles. Prices are very reasonable, frequently cheaper than other stores such as River City games or Game City. This place has a ton of selection but what I noticed was that their smaller car models, like the 1:64 scale ones, were so over priced. They have so much items for $8 - $10 that I've bought at Wal-Mart for almost half that. For their larger model cars I'd say their prices were pretty good though. I will also caution collectors on another thing. This place does not have items you'd want to open up after purchase. Like your typical $1 Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars for example. Everything in the store is pretty much stuff you'd want to keep packaged up and hanging on your wall or placed on a bookshelf or mantel. They do have a website with a lot of inventory listed on it but shipping is nuts so if you can make it to the store then do so. It would cost me $12 to ship a $9 diecast car to my place that's 2 KM away from the store for example. In conclusion I'd say if you have at least $50 to spend here you're going to spend it in a second but if you want to save some money for smaller diecast models, shop elsewhere.

This is great for around the holidays because when you're spending a lot of time with families, fun games definitely come in handy! And you'll need a new calendar right away so pick one up from Calendar Club! I just love browsing through this store because of the huge variety of calendars. They really have everything. I love photography too so it's an extra treat to get to look at the beautiful pictures in the calendars. It's worth a stop if you're Christmas shopping at Southgate!
