Being a massive Lord of the Rings fan, this place is absolutely awesome. I can spend hours upon…read morehours painting up models, building scenery, that sort of thing. I find it really relaxing and it's very pleasing to have something to show for it at the end. So whenever I see a Games Workshop (and there's a hell of a lot of them scattered across the world), I make a point of going in. I've spent a great deal of time in this particular store lately, and although usually I can find most of the stuff they sell on the internet for a bit less money, it's nice to actually have a look at it and hold the box or whatever in your hot little hand. That's something that online purchasing seems to lack. This store is staffed by people who know their stuff, and are interested in what they sell. I thought they were friendly and good at answering questions. There's a pretty decent selection here, too. I like this place.

It's a growing scene because of the video games that have come out recently. So you'll find all sorts of new people to befriend, too sit around and paint some mini men withl. The guys around here know their Warhammer, don't test their knowledge. Though they may come off a bit 'elitist' toward new players.

As far as video game stores go, Gametraders Marion is boss level. What really sets this place apart…read moreis the staff who expertly guard all your gaming needs and pop culture paraphernalia. This is not a den of snobbishly anti-social nerds who make you feel uncomfortable, these are friendly and helpful individuals, at least one of them is even a girl! Don't be fooled into thinking these cats are too cool to hold the keys to unlocking game knowledge though, they all know what it is you (and perhaps your child) are after. Not only that, they actually care about it too and are primed to consul you on your console. A desire to deliver superior service can sometimes slow them down a bit as they remain constantly focussed on whichever customer they're assisting and not the ever increasing line at the checkout. They won't let you walk out with the shabby display version of Mario's hat, they'll make you wait whilst they comb through their stock room to retrieve the hat of the redest red and the best embroidered M. At the time of purchase, if you're in a hurry, this may seem a tad annoying, but I bet they don't get many returns. Gametraders at Marion also host many nerd culture events throughout the year including cosplay comps, game showdowns in addition to their common awesome sales. The last time I went there it was apparently their fourth birthday celebrations and so there were many people there, and throughout the shopping centre, in full costume. Gametraders make not only the world of Warcraft or whichever realm you visit fun, they upload it to the real world too.

What a great little store. It has a wide range of PC and console games, but more recently has added…read morecomic books to it's range. It also stocks card games, and various gaming and movie memorabilia. If you're after this sort of thing, it's a must to check out if you're at Marion. The staff are courteous, and have a good knowledge of their products. Especially useful for me when I trying to choose a new gaming console for the kids. Definitely worth a look!

Despite the fact his opening hours are about as consistent as politician's election promises and…read morethat you are eagled eyed if you walk in and are either female or freshly shaven, the collection of records and signed album covers at Porthole Records is one of the best in Adelaide. You will have to get your library geek on though, records (although neatly lined up in shelves) are all over the place here. Either that or I'm not up on my music genres - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is "new wave"? I was tempted to just buy a box of 50c or $1 records by the door and see what happened at home, but I didn't have my gumption boots on today. The variety of genres is impressive and I'm sure you'd end up with some pretty top quality albums here for $20. And for those really dedicated collectors, yes the $150 Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Aboittoir Blues record is here for you too. CDs and cassette tapes, signed band posters and album covers are all on display here, but you too will need your gumption boots on to ask the owner re: price. Good luck!

The world of music has gone digital and iTunes has taken off in a big way. Music is available at…read morethe click of a button and instantly available on your computer with no additional hardware required. There is however a collection of people who like to have something tangible, something to hold on to. I'm one of those people. I like to SEE my music collection sitting on the shelf. I like to have visible CDs, tapes, vinyl and collectables. Porthole Records is a dying breed of music store that offers people like me the chance to expand their collection. Sadly it's only open a few days a week, but it's worth a trip down to Port Adelaide to check it out. It's full of LPs and that's what they primarily deal in. There's also a section for cassettes and CDs, but we're mainly talking old school vinyl here. Make sure you look everywhere, including all over the walls. I found a rare autographed copy of the Split Enz biography "Stranger Than Fiction" hanging on the wall and I had to have it. I rarely walk away from the store without having bought something. It may take a bit of digging through the copious amounts of stock, but it really is worth the trip if you find that one treasure you've been searching for years for. If you're a fan of any type of music you owe it to yourself to visit this store. It really is one of the last great music stores in South Australia.
