Independent…read moremusic on Cd's and Vinyl and some pretty cool DVDs as well along with the t-shirts and books that you would associate with some of the bands that smash their way through sets like there is no tomorrow! The store specialises in importing music from all around the world but Clarity maintains a strong focus on Punk and Hardcore related products, as well as Metal, Indie, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Soul, Funk, Prog and much more. The enterprise aims to support all local music by stocking a large range of music from Adelaide and Australia. Obviously all of this is not to everyone's taste, but there are quite a few folk around who have a healthy love of this material, and we all try to support our local bands. I enjoy most of these music genres in moderation. I always enjoy having a bit of a chin wag with Matt one half of the team who run the show (the fellow behind the counter) and the store. The other half of the team is Laura Horvath and they have both lived and breathed music for most of their lives. Not just a shop, Clarity Records is a record label, releasing on both CD and Vinyl formats. Clarity Records releases are distributed in Australia & NZ by Shock Records. So our Matt Footy is pretty clued up on what's new, what's classic (in terms of punk and heavy metal etc.) and what's about to be released; he's a good person to speak with if you are having trouble finding what you are listening for. Always smiling, unless you're trying to slip out the door with something you haven't paid for, then watch your back dude! Clarity Records is a clean and fresh shop with a fine range of odds and ends among the wide variety of music you'd want from a punk/rock/metal specialist store.

He is a happy geek and will tell you himself with a big proud smile. The store is downstairs off of Gawler Place, and seems like it's stuck in some kind of time warp, because there are videos on old school video shop shelves, and some amazing Doctor Who creatures standing around ready to yell "Exterminate!" at you with wobbly high pitched voices. If they do I'd run up the stairs out of the shop if I were you! Seriously, if you are a Start Trek, Doctor Who or Fantasy fan, this is a great video rental shop for you. Plenty of choices, and Stephen will gladly hunt down anything you are looking for that he doesn't have. Big Star is one of the last and much loved - I think the Magill Rd store is even the last Big Star in SA and as such is entrusted with a legacy. Big Star began in this very store in the 1980s; a second hand outlet focusing on sixties and seventies music. The chain consequently expanded to become six stores strong spread across Adelaide. I will always remember the huge collection of vinyl downstairs in their rundle st location, and seeing great bands, like the Avalanches play instore. Now with the changing times they have made their way full circle and are back to just the original second hand outlet. If, as a casual music consumer you fancy a little nostalgia and miss the days when you would spend all your pocket money on EPs / LPs / casette tapes / Cds. Flicking through the catalogue this store is a great trip down memory lane. For the more serious collector or music buff this is a must see destination. They're always looking for a select list of Vinyl, and this is the place to buy and sell. They have some selected merchandise, band t-shirts, etc too.

Whilst the others are sorely missed, I'm glad that this little treasure is still in operation. Big Star stocks a lot of new releases, all sealed in plastic wrap and ready for your unwrapping. But that's not why I come here - it's the secondhand rarities that I'm interested in. There's nothing better than going on the hunt for a rare record, and then finding it in a shelf amongst a number of discarded copies of Frampton Comes Alive. I've spent literally hours in here flipping through secondhand records, and the stuff you can find is pretty incredible - they've got collections of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, etc. Basically, all the good stuff. And of course, Big Star is one of the few record shops in which you can actually preview handed-down records before you purchase. This means that each visit to the shop is welcomed with an array of music, and going through record boxes to the warm crackling of vinyl is really something to relish.

I really really like this place! I find myself coming back quite often that I have to mention that…read moreI found the new 'Beats by Dre.Dre' headphones racked up on the far wall. I was so attracted to the black and red shiny design, I quickly put it on my head and turned up the classic Dr. Dre song that was blasting, because even amidst the chaotic heavy distorted bass that gave me a headache soon after, I was in absolute dancing rapture wearing these new American headphones, and I forgot about all my troubles in the real world. Pretty sure there were several customers looking at me nodding my head incessantly. One guy laughed at how much I was rapping with my hands, and even joined me and tried the headphones himself! LOL. (They WERE playing 'California Love' in the headphones. Coincidence? What a perfect match of a song for these headphones!) So sing with me and turn up the Dr.Dre Bass: "California looooooooove! [gangsta intro melody] California...knows how to party California...knows how to party In the citaaay of L.A. In the citaaay of good ol' Watts In the citaaay, the city of Compton We keep it rockin! We keep it rockin! [Verse One: Dr. Dre] Now let me welcome everybody to the wild, wild west A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness The track hits ya eardrum like a slug to ya chest Pack a vest for your Jimmy in the city of sex We in that sunshine state with a bomb ass hemp beat the state where ya never find a dance floor empty And pimps be on a mission for them greens lean mean money-makin-machines servin fiends I been in the game for ten years makin rap tunes.... ......." I spent half an hour just repeating that song, because the sound quality in these new headphones were the highest, sharpest and most clear ever. It kicks the apple Ipod headphones down the gutter, the sound is that good! Pity about the $500 price tag though :( If you don't like these headphones, well have a walk around and you will see there is sooo much else you can get here. New laptops, audio equipment, music CDs, DVDs, big screen TVs - yep, they got it all! Just be prepared for a long waiting line to get serviced. But these guys are quick at the counter, so you won't have to wait too long. Unfortunately I don't have several thousands of dollars to spare, so I quickly walked out wishing I could afford the Dr. Dre gangsta experience.

I walked into JB Hifi - where it was stocked for $89 - bringing a print out of the Officeworks page that gave the price. I found the mouse and took 3 to the counter, one for myself, two as gifts. They did however only have the mouse in Cream, as opposed to the Charcoal colour I would have preferred, but nonetheless, it was the same model. At first I was led to expect that the price match would be honoured at the cashier, but after a bit of confusion it was disallowed, as the Officeworks page displayed only the Charcoal coloured mouse. They offered a conciliatory price of $65 each, but as a 17 year old student I simply can't afford them at that price. Disallowing the price match of an item on the grounds of colour is very disappointing, and I hope this situation may be rectified. Returning home, I learn Officeworks has now sold out. It is a good store with kind employees but is unfortunately held back by poor policy and lacklustre management. I can't say I will be as keen to visit JB Hifi in the future after this experience.

Back then it was the only way you could really get alternative music, unless you had the time and patience to tape triple j. So at least for me, Dillons is a shop with a history. The store has a large range of music CDs and DVDs, ranging from recent and popular artists to more obscure tastes, as well as a large ABC and world music section. I never had too much trouble finding the stuff I was looking for, although occasionally they may have run out of stock of the less popular artists; in which case they would always ask if you would like to have it specially ordered in for you. The DVD and Blu-ray section is also extensive; featuring collections of new and classic titles, as well as a section devoted to SBS produced films. The pricing is a little higher than other retailers, but I can't blame them as it's hard to compete with nationwide outlets such as JB Hi-Fi. However, Dillons really feels like a music shop - unlike the clinical feel of some of the larger retailers. Another great thing about Dillons Music is that it seamlessly connects to Dillons Books next door. You can be browsing music one moment, and then move over on to books if you've changed your mind or wish to continue browsing.

Despite being a 'music' store, there are probably as many DVDs as CDs, most of them from the ABC and BBC, which is alright by me! I got a voucher here for xmas, and recently browsed around the CDs - they have a decent selection of your mainstream music with a little bit of world music thrown in. Not my bag but there will be plenty of people out there who still like buying a CD in person and whose tastes fit in with this. The DVDs were more my thing: Attenborough aplenty! Yes please. The staff are friendly and helpful as well. I support your empire, Dillon's. Just promise to use your power for good, not evil.
