We are here all the time. My fiancé have a number of game shops that we like to visit, but this is one of those that's at the top of the list. We find something every time we visit, and we'll find some gems more often than not. The store is organized super intuitively so we'll find what we're looking for with minimal effort, and if it's not in store the incredibly amazing staff will see if it's at another location for us. This location is also pretty game focused, so if you're looking for a wider selection of merch another location may be more suited for your needs. They do have some good merch, it's just not as much as some of the other locations. That being said, we've found some really cool collectibles here like gaming statues that are just too spectacular to pass up. I will be the first to admit that we look for every excuse to visit Game Over. Zero shame. This place rocks. read more

I'm officially in love with this chain of stores! Stopped in at one of their San Antonio locations (though I am an Austinite), and I was really impressed particularly by the selection this one boasted. To an extent I realize this is based off what gets brought in by customers looking to sell, but the organization of this store was also top-notch. In addition to ATARI 2600 cartridges, there were a few select Commodore 64 and Intellivision cartridges; on the opposite side of the spectrum, they had a decent wall of PS4 and Xbox One. So practically no matter what generation console games you're looking for, you'll find it here! Loads of games for handhelds as well, including GameGear, PSP, and all the Nintendo handhelds. You'll also find some neat modern "gamer gear" like hats, wallets/lanyards, plushies, etc. Some old guidebooks and manuals. And a fridge full of beverages. This location has a console museum too, where you can step through time and admire how far video game technology has come! Some really obscure consoles in the glass cases, with descriptions of each. So rad! *w* There's also an Artist's Alley toward the back, where you can support local artists who do video game related art. I love seeing all the creativity and how gamers get inspired! I did come in to do an exchange, because one of the ATARI 2600 cartridges I'd gotten from another location turned out to be a dud. The employee, Jake, was cool about it and happily supplied me another copy they had in inventory. Gotta give him some props- he's an excellent multi-tasker. When I came in, it was pretty busy and he was the only one there, but he did great at attending to everyone and cheerfully at that, even with the phone ringing too! This location doesn't have a set-up to test/demo anything in the store (some Game Over Videogames do), but they did seem to have a backroom area where you could schedule to host a party/meet-up, and that's pretty neat. read more

Scammed! Never again! Bought a Dreamcast HD Cable on Saturday, it did not work with my monitor. Was hoping to return it Sunday for store credit or an exchange, SOMETHING/ANYTHING! Was told there was nothing that could be done and I should return WITH MY CONSOLE! so they can make sure it was defective. Because my money is good enough but my word isn't. I was told ahead of time that if it didn't work that an exchange and/or store credit could be done in the event it didn't work and I was offered neither. I was told I had to spend more gas and more of my time and to bring my whole setup from home to appease some BS store policy AND I had to do it while a manager was on duty (because f*ck my time). Fine, I'll come back when I can with my console and my monitor and demand they make it work and when it comes to light that I wasn't telling a lie I expect a full refund. I would've been content with store credit had I been treated with respect, not feel like I had just been robbed and taken care of this situation when I came in Sunday, now I want a refund so I can spend my money else where and never set foot in this store again. Update (12-10-18): In my three-star review from December of last year, I complained about the customer service at this location, specifically one employee's lack of knowledge. My preferred retro gaming store remains the Game Over Videogames (sic) at Bandera and 1604, but my most recent experiences at this location warrant two extra stars. Last Friday, I took advantage of an email offer for 30% off everything in the store. I wasn't sure if the offer included new items, but the nerdy young lady (not an insult, for nerdiness often equates to an encyclopedic knowledge of video games) at the counter assured me it did. While I was browsing, she made conversation about her favorite consoles and encouraged me to check out the retro clone systems on sale behind the counter. This is why I patronize brick-and-mortar gaming stores; online shopping might be more convenient, but I value the face-to-face interaction. I ended up purchasing two loose Atari 2600 cartridges ("Entombed" and "Lost Luggage," both considered "scare" titles on AtariAge.com), a crappy shovelware game for the Wii U (I'm going for a complete Wii U collection...because I'm neuroatypical and *must* collect), and the pièce de résistance: A Retron 77 third-party system that plays Atari 2600/VCS cartridges in 720p! With the coupon, I saved over $30 total! Even without coupons and specials, the prices here are very competitive. Game Over has an impressive selection of reasonably priced games ranging from the late 70s to the current generation. In the past year, I've picked up several complete-in-box titles for the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Intellivision, Colecovision, and Magnavox Odyssey 2. About a year ago, I was pleasantly surprised to find a copy of "Obelix" for the 2600 (considered "very rare" on AtariAge) for only $5.99 and a copy of "Red Alarm" (Virtual Boy) for only $7.99. These are competitive prices even by eBay standards. If you live near Blanco and 410, then this location is an easy recommendation. The store is a tad congested, but that is a minor complaint; bury me alive in a coffin full of dusty Intellivision cartridges--I won't complain! Skip the big-box retailers and online corporate behemoths and help support your local retro gaming stores. read more

I'm not much of a huge console gamer personally, but my fiancé and friends both are, so we frequently visit this place. They have a good selection of games and cute merchandise. However, I would NOT recommend buying console parts, controllers etc. from here! My fiancé purchased a broken hard drive and a broken racing wheel that had corrosion inside of it from here... They don't do cash refunds- only in store credit is given. Thankfully he loves games, so we did get to grab a few old 360 games in exchange for the broken wheel, but it still feels a little scummy how they won't give you your cash back. Buying one dead broken item is a mistake, but twice is a bit ridiculous. My fiancé had been looking for a racing wheel for his racing games for so long and he shouldn't be having to get his tool bag to open and try and fix a corroded $25 racing wheel (paper weight) himself when it was supposed to just plug in and play!! Don't let the haters fool you. This is perhaps the greatest blessing the retro game community has gotten here in San Antonio. I've known about this retro game store since the main Austin location was advertised by screwattack.com back in 2007. Me and my friend checked it out and we were surprised at the sheer amount of old games and accessories available. Checking out this location here in my hometown, I gotta say that though the actual size of the store is smaller than the main Austin store, they still manage to cram just as much stock. As I said, their selection of games from the Dreamcast days and older are just fantastic. The quality on these games, the return policy, the fact that many of these games come with their original box (even NES games) is a major plus when shopping here. They also tend to carry products you won't find anywhere else in town. The staff is also very friendly and will treat you like family if you allow them to. Not even most Gamestop employees will be as helpful and informative as these guys. It's a given that they won't know EVERY last thing about games but they know more than enough to answer any common inquiry and then some. And to defend these guys, the prices on their stock is very fair, despite what others may say. They may use flea markets and online stores as arguements, but you have to realize that you get what you pay for as well. It's no different than telling the same thing to the guy at the local Gamestop store when they're a legit business. You can buy online and get it for cheaper, no doubt. That's how everything is online. But you get the convienence of having a local store. In fact, I'm sure the same people who hate on this place for their prices, their selection of games, etc, are the same kind of people who say Gamestop needs to burn. So once again, don't let those arguements fool you. In essence, this store really does remind me of the Funcoland stores that once existed years ago; The laid back enviroment, the sheer amount of old and current games to choose from, not to mention the dvds, import games, museum, events and so much more they have. There were aisles and aisles of NES, SNES, Genesis and even freakin' GameGear games! It's hard to justify the prices of the games that are behind glass shelves. I don't mind paying a pretty penny for retro games as I myself have quite the collection and know their worth. I checked out 8 GameCube games behind the glass and they were asking for above market value (which is fair because they are a retailer) but it's not considered a good deal when 7 of those games were in not the best of shape and had several scratches. My favorite game store from Austin comes to San Antonio! Have something from just about all systems released here in the US and some imports. What's great about Game Over is that they have multiple locations and if they don't have it in the SA store, they can transfer it from another. They focus on the classics, but you will find some of the current gen as well. Lots of accessories and collectible stuff. One of my fav things about Game Over is their staff. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Been to all their stores and I haven't met someone I haven't liked. The San Antonio store is no exception, same great guys. I love it's location too. But I am totally biased since it is literally a 1 mile drive for me. Alright, my gaming days are way over. I can't remember the last time I sat down and killed hours just playing video games. Nonetheless, I have way too many fond memories of sitting around with my brothers and sisters playing video games from when I was much younger. Loved this place. They have a huge selection of retro games to choose from. I was out here during vacation and when I went in the vibe was great. There were people hanging talking about games. I think I just missed an event that was going on before i got there. I got a xbox game, went back to my hotel to realize there was a crack on this disc hub so I called them up. They apologized for what happened and I was able to exchange for a different game with no issue. The staff was cool about it, there was no attitude what so ever. Get the game you want and that's it. That's all I want. I gave them five stars because the prices are reasonable, the customer service was good from start to finish and they helped me the next day with no issue. These are the kind of retro stores that I wish was out here in the bay area of California. Just think for a second. What are some of the most memorable video games from your childhood? Chances are Game Over can reunite you with 99% of those games and memories all in one spot (at affordable prices too). Remember R.O.B., or the Turbographix? They got you covered. It simply is a delight to walk in and and be bombarded with the sounds you'll instantly recognize. Game Over isn't a huge store but is still roomy enough to preserve "personal space". It's very colorful, bright and has a very friendly atmosphere. I came to buy a Sega Saturn controller and was not disappointed at all. At $8 for one you can't deny Game Over has all types of gamers in mind, not just the hardcore audience. Which I think is why most retro game shops fail. They completely ignore the "everyday" gamer. The "blue collar" gamer, if you will. The clerks were extremely friendly and seemed available and very approachable. Let me explain that. Most of the retro shops I've been to tend to hire hardcore types and really don't seem to stress greeting customers or simply asking how they can help or even answer questions if they have any. Game Over seemed to have a great mix of knowledgeable and friendly staff. Which is rare in my experience. I won't repeat what others have posted in their reviews in terms of selection, arcades, museums and tournaments. Yea they got all that. I've found my new retro shop. They get new things everyday so if you don't come in you may just miss a great buy. As much as I'd love to give this a five star rating I can't, due to one of the employees. Update: went to the San Pedro location to try and sell a game, not only did the guy not greet me, but he stood there tapping away at his keyboard trying his hardest to avoid eye contact. Then after about 15mins of waiting for this mouth breather to research how much they'l offer for this game he gives me a lowball number and then tells me he doesn't have enough cash in the register for a cash option. Stay away they may have a huge selection but the terrible customer service combined with their absurd prices is a huge deal breaker. My god the selection here is enormous, they even have a little arcade in the back. This store could easily be a 5 star place if not for the sheer fact that they try to fleece their customers. Look I understand nerd culture has made all the old systems desirable again and their age makes them a little hard to come by. But honestly where do you get off selling a super nintendo system for $70? I went in there looking to pick up a system and a couple games to show my kids what real games looked like. If the systems were the only things that were over priced then it wouldn't be so bad however, one certain game that i was looking for, has captivated me and my brothers since we stole it from a blockbuster almost over 20 years ago was "Metal Warriors" for the Super Nintendo. When asked the clerk informed me that unfortunately they did not have any copies on hand, but also warned me that its priced at $150. charging twice consol price for a game is obscene. I'd rather deal with Heroes and Fantasies for my vintage games, as at least there, the guys are much more pleasant. read more

Abysmal customer service. Walked inside with my honey, we weren't greeted. Wandered around a bit, checking out the stock. Then we approach the counter to inquire where the PS3 games are located and the dude goes, "Uhh YEAH, right behind you." As if to imply he was an idiot for asking. My boyfriend replies, "I only saw PS2 over there." And the dude just points to a different wall. Whatever, guy. We find one game we are interested in and wait in line for at least 10 minutes while the 3 employees are answering the phone, going to the back, or chatting it up with their friends. Not a single person offered assistance, and the one seemed rather annoyed by a simple question. I put my selection down and walked out. Clearly they did not want our business. read more
