I am a huge horror fan and since my birthday fell on a Friday the 13th this year, I wanted…read moresomething horror themed to do. I came across Prototype Escape rooms "Canibals in the Catacombs" room. The story was intriguing and the list of disclaimers, which might dissuade some, made me more interested. When we arrived we all had to sign our waivers and were introduced to our game master Emma. She was extremely personable and walked us through what to expect before we were escorted into the catacombs. The set work was very well done and unlike some escape rooms I've done, everything was in excellent condition and working order. The puzzles were well thought out and required a mixture of puzzle solving and attention to detail. I won't spoil anything about the room, but I will say that everyone in my group was jumpy and looking over their shoulder for the majority of the game (and one of my group, a 6'2" ex-military man, screamed like a little girl). For horror fans or escape room fans, I cant recommend this enough. This was easily one of the top escape rooms I've ever done.

Our group booked a Saturday evening escape room for 5pm this past weekend for a friends birthday…read more This was only my second time ever doing an escape room game. I am definitely not the witty type for these scenarios but I do LOVE haunted houses and immersive experiences such as this. Our birthday boy is extremely witty and is very good at puzzles and games. He picked the Cannibals in the Catacombs room for all 6 of us to experience with him which is Expert level. And it really was expert level! (Which is great!) We were stumped a few times and were given an option before going in to signal for extra clues if need be. We did. The clues were helpful , but not overly helpful where the game/host is giving you the answer when asked - I liked that. We were told there was only a 22% escape rate for this expert level room so the clues were extremely helpful. I only have one other experience to compare this to from a nearby neighboring escape room company. If I had to choose between this escape room business and the nearby escape room 5 miles or less down the road, I would hands down pick Prototype. The prep before going in the room was way more detailed, the props in the room more realistic and movie quality, and the details/clues were very well thought out. I kept saying while in the room how pretty & realistic all of the props are. Nothing is damaged or worn in any way, and if at any point you need to leave or "escape" , it's easy to do so. I'm sold on prototype. I'm not even an escape room goer per se and I'd hands down happily try it again. If you are on the fence about trying, this is your sign to throw the doubt out the window and just give prototype a try. Any Halloween/Spooky lovers out there like myself - pick Cannibals in the Catacombs! There are some extra surprises in store for those who enjoy a good thrill.

It looked like you'd be walking with 3D glasses thru a forest with all these animals so large and real.....like the elephant. In reality your only images were right in front of your face, the glasses stopped working for both of us half way thru and had to be replaced. To read about this experience on Facebook it should have been fantastic-technology,science, nature, etc but it wasn't. The girls running the event were nice but hardly knew what to do. I suggested they needed to give some directions as to what we were suppose to do while in the program, with the glasses in the room. Like how were we to use our hands and our voice to activate things (I guess) but they didn't have the training to know to do that . My credit card charge was with a company out of Germany bec that was what was on the bill so I suspect the experience could have been there but it wasn't.

First let me say the place is super clean and the staff is amazing. They go out of there way to make you feel welcomed and go above and beyond to make sure you totally understand the rules and your mission to unlock the puzzle. We went in with the opinion that we could easily solve a room under one hour. Ha ha ha, wrong it took us all of the 60 minutes. We did the St Augustine lighthouse and it was so much more then we had planed. Our guide was Hale who was amazing and patient with us. There were times that we keep missing some of clues, and she would have to redirect and repeat several times because we could not hear her over our bantering and laughing. All I can say without giving to much away. It's worth every penny. You find it fun and entertaining. We will be back to do the other rooms. Thanks again.

To my surprise, they paired us with an entire group--something that had never happened before. For experienced players, be aware that they may fill any available spots with random participants, which can hinder communication and lead to overcrowded rooms. Additionally, if the room is linear, most players will end up just standing around watching. To make matters worse, I'm not from town, and even though the room is booked by another group, they refuse to issue a refund. Very disappointing overall.

After lunch in…read morethe Town Center we agreed to do an escape room since she was not able to attend a Yelp event at one. This one was well off the beaten path and well hidden if you weren't looking for it. The place was dead as it was a Sunday so we figured we'd liven it up, as Susan would say, "Life is for shenanigans." The staff were entertained by us bantering and dressing up in the different detective clothing while we waited for our scheduled time to escape from The Library. What was a little different from my past experience, a staff member is in the room with you monitoring since there are no cameras around. Also, there's creepy/suspenseful music playing with a dayglow timer going to keep you focused and panicked at the same time while you're looking around for clues. And while we didn't finish in the hour that we were supposed to, we thought that we did pretty good and got out maybe 5 minutes later. I really enjoyed this escape room and I think now I might be addicted :p

This time, we set out to conquer the game room. Each time, staff oriented us, walked us through the rules of the game, and offered to give us a set number of clues as we tried to escape. Unlike some other escape games, the staff member here stays in the room with you the entire time. My group has escaped both times and I actually like the way that they run the this escape room. My only issue is that in order to solve many of these puzzles, you need prior information and knowledge in order to be successful. Other game rooms that I've done provide all of the clues you need in the actual room. But here, if you do not have a lot of common knowledge, knowledge about games, basic science, cars, etc, you may find it difficult to escape.

The staff helped us a couple of times when we got stuck and we escaped in time. It was a lot of fun. Today, we went back with my husband and 13 year old to do the Batman room. Everyone put different pieces of the puzzles together and we did fairly well until the last room where we got stumped. Despite asking the guide to help us when we got behind, we continually got the same "hint" at the end that wasn't helpful. After we failed to escape, she came in and explained what we were supposed to do, which I think is exactly what we were doing, so either I misunderstood or the game wasn't working properly. It was a bit of a bummer for what was intended for a fun family outing. So, we built character instead, and focused on the first 50-55 minutes which were pretty fun. I share this only to educate that even if you ask for help, you should be aware you might still not escape. I still want to try the Scooby Doo room, but might try the other easier room (or maybe just a different company) first.

LOCATION: This escape room is a good option if you want an indoor, non-touristy activity in St. Augustine. The escape room is located about 15-20 minutes south of historic St. Augustine and about 30-40 minutes south of Jacksonville. The easiest route is to take 95 to the SR206 (Crescent Beach/Hastings exit) otherwise you can get stuck with all the lights on US1. The strip is located behind a Walgreens. They offer great group prices if you're looking to have your kids try out an escape room but don't want to drop too much $$. They also let us sneak a peek at the two other escape rooms. Looks fun! BTW - You can celebrate your escape with ice cream at the Cold Cow just two miles up the road (gotta love when you can rely on Yelp to find an ice cream spot when your troop finishes earlier than expected!)
