So I was wanting to start playing Magic The Gathering. I have a few friends who have played it since they were kids but I had never played it myself. They took brought a few of their premade decks and we went up to Game Cafe. It costs nothing to hang out and play games there. They do offer though drinks and snacks and of course a store full of board games and all types of TCG. I bought a couple Magic booster packs and a Commander deck while I was there. I was new so the gentleman behind the counter explained to me what was the best to start with, without trying to upsell me might I add, and I happily spent my money there. Used to be a fan of this place but not sure if they are under new ownership or what. Their singles are on average 18% higher than all the other local shops and they give less for trading in cards compared to other local shops. They now have a policy where you can't go in a look and buy cards. Order must be placed online and wait for an approved employee to pick your cards out of inventory. If you looking for a relaxing place to browse and pick up cards try Spankys or Mindgames they are far more friendly. read more

So freaking cool. Games galore. We randomly popped in to check it out. My boyfriend managed to find a game called Citadels that he had been searching for. Game Cafe - Hobby Shops Near Me - Independence, Missouri

My husband and I stopped in to Game Cafe twice on our recent trip to the Kansas City area. We were there for perusing and hopefully to purchase a game as well. They have a pretty good stock of games and lots of tables for gameplay. It appears they have a downstairs for functions, as well. There is an all-you-can-play-for-$5 arcade in the back. Obviously a little bit of everything for whatever you fancy. I'm a bit confused by the "cafe" portion of Game Cafe because all we saw was a soda machine but perhaps we overlooked other things. The only irritating thing about Game Cafe is that the game we wanted to purchase was priced $10 higher than MSRP. We asked about price matching to MSRP but the cashier had to call the owner (?) and did not receive a response in the time we waited. He said that they price based on what their distributor says is MSRP. Obviously we do not own a game store but we purchase a LOT of games. We're willing to pay more than online to support local businesses but not extra more than what we can get it for back home or at another store in the same area. We run into this problem in Austin, as well, where a game store will charge $10-$15 higher for a game than the other store(s) that is literally down the street. If it's working for you then great, but it's not working for us. read more

I enjoy the atmosphere in this place. Staff is always nice and knowledgeable about their products. They don't always have what I'm looking for and stock is very limited at times. It's still a fun place to go play Pokemon or other games with random people. read more

Went to sell Pokemon cards, spent over an hour on the store computers looking through the "buylist" to see which cards they would buy, expecting to get cash the same day. Then the girl working the desk, Autumn, informed us that they don't buy in bulk, don't give cash, and that they don't write checks for less than $20. She should have made all of this very clear before we wasted our time. Never coming back. read more

Good customer service, great knowledgeable staff, and extremely helpful. One tip: they have a website, but if you buy on the website, you get "web site credit," and if you buy in the store, you get a store member credit. Both are kept separate, and the in-store credit is a higher rate. But the Website is great for an item you want to keep reserved. read more
