I came in with pretty low expectations but I was pleasantly surprised! True you need to buy a drink before you come in to look at the comics but it makes sense. You don't just go in a coffee shop and only use their internet without buying a coffee. And it felt safer since the store is crammed with awesome stuff, there were less people to breath with (and there was lots of hand sanitizer) I got the mood enhancer CBD non-alcoholic beer and it was delicious! You get a cbd gummy and then you chase it with your drink, so it's a lot fruitier. I don't even like beer but that is reason alone to come back! Anyway the store was like a blast from the past, it had some arcade machines and lots of random cool stuff. They had a very nice manga section and used science fiction/fantasy novels. There were a ton of comics and they were organized alphabetically. The owner was actually super gracious and helpful (I guess as long as you aren't an entitled asshole you won't be treated like one) Parking was a pain but what can you expect since it is on the main drag but I would definitely come back. read more

Galactic Comics suffers from the old school comic book shop/antique store mentality that a successful location is one that is completely packed with marked up "treasures." At this point, it's not clear what Galactic Comics wants to be anymore. Are you a place to rent DVDs? Play arcade games? Browse comics? It's certainly not a place that's welcoming for geeks to hang out. PROPS: There's a mountain of inventory here, and it's very possible that you'll find a diamond in this rough. Every time I come to Ocean Beach. Galaxy Comics is a place I visit. The comic shop gets better and better when I come in. Comics and similar related merchandise like toys, shirts, etc. are displayed throughout the shop. The place is also filled with video games just like an arcade. They even have a classic tabletop Pacman/Galaxian. Awesome. The service is friendly. The guy working there greets you when you walk in. My favorite part of the comic book store though is the smell. Seriously. I love the smell of old comic book paper. Smells like a library. If you are an avid reader of vintage books or old comic books. You know what I mean. It is intoxicating. Overall, a solid comic book store. Good selection of titles. The store might not look outright organized but upon closer examination. You will see that it is very well put together. Wtf...seriously charging to be able to shop. You are required to buy a soda just to go inside this s*it hole. The outside is dirty and faded. What we could see from the doorway it was just as dirty. Couldn't tell you anything about prices because I'm not paying for a ticket to shop. Drove out there specifically to go to this store, not worth the $3.99 to go in to the crowded dirty rat hole. It had a really good selection of not only comics, but also arcade games and collectibles. It was a bit overwhelming with everything but it wasn't a bad overwhelming. They had an amazing assortment of books and even manga. The employee working was really nice and even gave me a little 101 Dalmatians freebie on top of my graphic novel purchase. He made me and my friends feel welcome and was very helpful. I wasn't able to find the Zatanna comics I wanted but I was able to buy a Justice League Dark graphic novel! Incredibly rude service, fee to enter, and underwhelming stock. There's a fee just to enter the establishment (you can't look in the store unless you buy some soda), and sadly there's not much to see in terms of good collectibles... I remember the store having a much better selection a couple years ago, but now you can find a better and wider selection at almost any other comic book store in San Diego. So my little dude is into comics and wanted to come find some new reads. We dropped in after a trip to Bird Rock. We got street parking in front of the Harp, not bad for a Saturday afternoon. This place is exciting for a little kid. I mean, I'm not that into comics, but I can play along. There are full size video games in the front of the store. My son ended up playing Batman and enjoying himself even though he swore only the Lego version was cool. I think it's cool that they rent DVDs here, I don't know of anywhere else that still does that. I'm not a fan of Netflix myself, but to each their own. We mostly just explored the kids section. There's quite a lot of cool stuff in there for the geek in your life. Lots of the Regular Show, Skylanders, Adventure Time, Angry Birds, Batman, Star Wars, ect. There's also some cool figures and other fun toys. My son scored a cool Smurfs figure. He's a little collector, he got home and added it to his collection. He also got a Teen Titans comic and a Lego Batman comic, both of which he read in the car on the way home. My son really enjoyed this store a lot and the owner was very nice to him. He made a point of greeting him and engaging him in conversation, which I always appreciate given that my son does have special needs. It can be harder to draw him into conversation, but he was patient and waited him out. I would definitely return here, not just for the fun comics, but also the great customer service. read more

I'm a big comic book collector and have visited a ton of comic shops over the years. This shop is by far the worst. I've visited this shop dozens of times as it's my nearest shop, and the owner is just a straight up jerk. He has a ton of rules - no photos, no taking the comics out of their bags, etc. Many stores have their quirks, but these border into the truly unreasonable and downright absurd. The place is always a mess too. The owner hardly stocks any new issues. Instead the store is just an assortment of dusty random issues with no gems to be found. The shopping experience is typically awful to boot. The owner is obsessed with policing his fiefdom rather than selling comics. I once witnessed the owner hassle a black teenager and his friend. He accused the teen of being banned from the store due to a previous incident. The teen denied ever having been to the store. The owner pulled out a picture, only to realize that he was mistaking the kid for someone else. Embarrassed, the owner said the kid had similar "hair". Instead of roaming the store, the owner stays firmly placed up front in his little perch, peeking his head around to chirp out his incessant rules and qualms with customers. The shop is oppressively hot in the summer too. I love comics, and support local business, but this store cannot be good for the hobby. I've seen to many kids and newcomers leave the store with a sour expression because of the poor experience they had at the shop. And today, I decided I'm gonna have to pull the plug on this place as well. read more

Despite the low review, I thought I would I check it out. I did not get the pleasure of meeting the arse of the place some people mentioned, but instead was greeted by a beautiful young woman who was willing to help find what I needed. That being said, the place seemed more like a bail bondsman/pawn shop than it did a comic shop. Has a lot of stuff from 2000 to current with some early stuff throughout. Really needs to have a fire sale on stuff like the Simpsons, X-Files, Battlestar Galactica and use than money to upgrade the place some. Has a lot of potential, just not a good selection older stuff that some of us older generation look for. Some smelly candles might help too as it has a strong musty smell read more

Back in January I took my daughter down to Ocean Breach. It had been well over a year since I had visited the area. She was excited to patron the local comic book shop as it was recommended by a friend. Unfortunately, we were not permitted to enter without purchasing a beverage. The owner sited COVID regulations. Oddly enough we had already shopped in several of the other stores without such issue. The owner was quite rude and unprofessional. From the entrance we could see that the store was rather dank and not worth fussing over. My daughter did however write a review on Google maps that day. Nearly two months late the owner replied. The owner must make a habit of turning people away as he referenced a completely different patron and her friend in his repugnant reply. Regardless of the of the individual he was referring to, as a business owner his response was revolting and unprofessional. There has been an obvious influx of transients to the Ocean Beach area. That being said, it is still poor business to trash talk potential patrons. For anyone considering this establishment I recommend looking elsewhere. I'm not one to pass up a comic book store. Even though I'm not a comic nerd I always enjoy the wonders of looking at different knick knacks. I will also swoon over Rick and Morty anything. Galactic is filled to the brim with tall shelves that are loaded with cool memorabilia, figures, comics, movies, and other rad treasures. They have several coin games to play when you first walk in which is in itself a reason to stop by. Nostalgia at its finest! If there's one thing I hate doing, it's leaving a bad review of a cool business. But I have to. Now, if I had never picked up an action figure in my life, I would love this place. The problem is that I have. I know how much these items sell for. I also realize there is an expected difference between online prices & in-store-small-business prices. Even accounting for that, and even given the tourist-prone area this store occupies, it is STILL ridiculously overpriced. I didn't see any Funko figures for under $20. Really? The Rocket Raccoon one is for sale RIGHT NOW at the 7-11 on Mission Gorge for $7.99. Here? $20. Tin of mints? $8. Tiny stuffed donut? $11. I couldn't find many comics that weren't 2013-current. Many were damaged. Tons of toys out of packsges, not many still in boxes or blister packs. If you want kawaii, hot topic is cheaper. This place has surprisingly good reviews for such a poor comic shop. Sure, it's convenient for a trip to the beach, but Galactic Comics has such a poor selection of comics and collectables. Also the actual shop is gross. There was water on the ground and floor was dirty.There was NO silver age issues, no rare collectables, and a very poor selection of comics in rather poor condition. They have action figures, and other collectables but they are common and, again, not a good selection. I was surprised by the poor condition of everything. Whooo this place is cool. Pretty darn cool. I'd like to write a portion of this review in the style of Murmaider by Dethklok. Comics? Check Toys? Check Movies? Check Posters? Check Arcade? Check Board games? Check Video games? Check Strict anti-photography policy? Check I wish to emphasize is how many cool products are in this relatively small store. There are cool things everywhere. There's a TV that was playing the Regular Show at the time I walked in - pretty cool. A Marvel vs Capcom arcade game on attract mode blares music in the back. There were also cool carnival machines where you can get your fortune told for a mere quarter. This is all great. Now it is true what others have said. Some comics are squeezed in boxes so it's a little hard to peruse them, especially if you're looking for some specific back issue. They are in meticulous alphabetical order though. I am always on the hunt for Zatanna anything - lucky/unluckily for me, interest in comics dies down after W for Wonder Woman. The new release section is near the front of the store and I was impressed this place had already gotten the newest issue of Black Bolt's solo series. If you're in the area and you have any interest in comics/games, I recommend a visit. read more

Pay for your drink and enjoy yourselves, people. I see it's the most common complaint but it says right on the door to make a purchase before being able to enter. They're all really good sodas too, nothing you'll find too often in any store. Beyond that, there's bound to be a few comics you're on the lookout for with their giant selection and a pretty small but neat arcade. They're all for sale too and I don't remember seeing any out of order, which is great considering there's a whole lot of arcades out there with a handful of broken machines. I was disappointed and sad by this so-called comic book store. To begin with, more than half -- about 75 percent -- of the store is devoted to dvd rentals. The remaining space is given to graphic novels and mainstream publishers (Marvel, DC ...), so my thirst for quirky indie comics was left completely unquenched. Also, to top it all off, EVERY single book they had was boarded and sleeved, which made casual browsing difficult and uninviting. So, yeah I was disappointed. But like I said earlier I was also sad. This place is an incredible blast from the past ... and the future! They are so knowledgeable about movies, the details, the plots, the eras. We subscribe to Netflix DVDs, but I think that Galactic Comics is better! Preparing for the release of Star Wars 9, I decided to view all the SW movies prior to seeing the final installment. So I asked about how to view the movies. The head guy had so much information and great suggestions! (Did you know that Star Wars had a TV Christmas Special?) I want to support local, nerdy businesses both monetarily and through social media. However, the owner of this shop makes it very hard to want to do that. Foremost: ABSOLUTELY NO PICTURES. End. Full stop. The owner is sitting behind a caged desk (the only time I've seen this in OB - like he's in some sketchy area of a big city) watching security cameras, making sure you do not pull out your smart phone under any circumstances. He will not be happy if you do. The shop and product are ok, but don't expect to find anything if you're a collector. Almost none of the comics are on boards, and they're shoved into boxes, making it impossible to actually find anything. The figurines and other boxed collectibles are all damaged in some way (bad boxes, sun damaged, etc). On the good side, there is a TON of product. You may find something you didn't even know you wanted. There are also arcade games, and a good selection of movie rentals. I am always willing to pay a reasonable amount more money to support a local shop (even if I can find it cheaper on Amazon). If you're adding value to the local community and make coming into your store a good experience, I want to support you. But if you're rude to your patrons, I'm sorry - there's very little chance I'll be back to your establishment. And so it goes for Galactic Comics. read more

In town for the week for a family beach vacation and while walking down the downtown area I spotted this shop and as a hard core comics enthusiast and collecter of all things nerdy and pop culture I thought what a great opportunity to support the hurting comics industry and a small business. That is, until I actually tried to enter the store. I saw the signs on the door about the need to make a small purchase before entering but I thought, could this be real. That sounds like too shady of a business practice to be real. But alas it is, as I was told as I entered that no browsing unless purchase is made. As I'm not one to make a scene and I really don't care all that much about not being able to shop at this place. I turned around and left without any hassle. It's the business owners rules and if they want to have maintain those rules then fine. They lost some business today as I'm always looking for higher priced vintage comics and toys/collectibles but again, that's their prerogative to stand by these rules. Now this would have ended it, but I came on yelp to see if I was alone in this happening and come to find out I am not and not only that, but the owner is then replying to the honest bad reviews by calling the reviewers names and making excuses. I get that there has to be restrictions during covid, so make people line up and wait outside. Don't charge them for something they don't need or want and then act like it's know big deal by doing so. I get you don't want people reading the books in the store so post a no reading sign like other shops do. If you don't want people taking books out of the plastic bag/board then leave a unbagged copy out for quick review. Also bag/board should be a courtesy and a cost you eat to maintain customers. If you need to see this in practice go visit Comics Factory in Pasadena, CA. They've been doing this for going on two decades and have a very strong customer following like myself. Overall, I am just another collector that doesn't like to see shady and disrespectful business practices in the comics/collectible industry and since the owner wants to be known for 1 star reviews, I happy obliged and look forward to his nonsensical/trolly reply full of excuses. read more

Looking through the windows of this joint you'll notice they do comics and DVD rentals. Movie posters and collectibles permit very little to be seen on the inside from the exterior of the store. But a quick step inside will make any graphic novel leaguer do a double take. DVD's and comics? Kinda nice combo. Ok I'll admit I'm a huge netflixer but when I have no patience to wait for dvd for tv series or I'm impatient for any other entertainment reasons, I go here. This isn't so much a comic store as it is a dvd rental. And as much as the lines get blurred on comic book films to regular films, it still doesn't change the fact that when I'm in the mood for comics, I'm in the mood to read. Besides that, with Netflix, who the hell goes to a video store to rent a film these days? Moving on to the actual comic shop. The new releases were on this really small metal rack. It was more like a pillar. Very difficult to find anything as there wasn't much room and books overlapped and covered each other. Had to get help finding a big title of the week. Then they looked at me funny when I told them I didn't want to pay extra and wouldn't take a bag and board. I mean, I was visiting comic con and just happen to pick up my books here for the cheaper price. I don't need to pay extra.... In any event, the prices were alright. the service was pretty bad as they were watching superman or some other film and vaguely paying attention to what I was asking. I suppose if you need a dvd rental, you can come here.. but if you're in need for comics then I hope you're in luck here cause they have a very small selection. read more

I didn't want to believe it, but it is true. I've been a long time customer of this shop for many years. I've always chosen to support this store in favor of others, because I like to support smaller businesses. However, when I sent my friend from out of town in their direction, they treated her with disrespectful comments, and replied to her honest questions with rude retorts and racist remarks. She gave this store a one star review because of her experience and she got a response. They responded with insults and falsely calling her high. They even plugged in resources, not as an act of human decency, but as move to make themselves look superior. Read their responses on google maps to low star reviews and you can see yourself. I am ashamed I have supported them for so long, and will no longer conclude my business with these individuals. Showed us all kinds of goodies and offered us many random deals, he really knows his products! So I do have this shelf, where I have a pile of untouched trade paperbacks that I bought last week. So I had my blinders on in the comics section. They did seem to be well stocked. This place is small, but it's much more organized than the other (great) but cluttered comic shops in town. They have a mega selection of blind boxes and random toys! I'm a big fan of kidrobot and am thrilled to find another place to find their products! So many random toys and things from just about anything you could be looking for. Come check this place out! There also appeared to be a video rental store in the back, with Blockbuster going out left and right, coming to the comic book store to rent your movies may be in your near future! One of the worst shops EVER! The strong arm tactics of, "you're not allowed in here, unless you purchase a soda or water first", wins the prize of the worst small business owner I've ever seen. With that, and the owner being one of the shadiest dudes I've ever run across in a comic shop, if you could call it a comic shop? The selection of comics is maybe the worst I've ever seen! Sure, there was some new weekly books but besides that, everything is wrapped in plastic so you can't look at any comics in this shop? So you can't look at any comics or ANY graphic novels because everything is pre-bagged, AND if you don't notice the little sign that says EVERY comic purchased has a "bag fee", without asking you, this garbage retailer charges extra for bags, and then even more, on top of the bag fee, if it has a bag AND board, the extra charge per comic was around .50 cents???!!! WHAT?! 50 cents for each "bag & board", and he doesn't even ask if you want them, or inform you at the register when he's charging you 2 to 3 times what a bag & board are supposed to cost? I would have taken a picture of the tiny sign, stating the "policy" but this dude has an insanely aggressive stance of no pictures inside the store? Regardless, the little sign is nowhere near the register so it's easy to miss so he can justify gouging unsuspecting customers? Again, this place has the worst selection of back issues (old comics), so don't bother going here to try and find anything good because this place is straight trash on every level! The 2 most important things that a comic shop can offer are, service & selection and the service is less than 1 star, and the selection is also less than 1 star, so yeah, that about sums it up, and deservedly so! read more

I used to go in here every week while I was at the OB Farmers Market. I don't collect comics but they always had a few used videos for sale and I sometimes found one I wanted. The owner wasn't real friendly and I sometimes felt like they were watching me suspiciously, which made it less fun to be there. I'm sorry if they've had bad experience with people shoplifting but that didn't make me feel very welcome, especially as a buying customer. read more

I duck in to have a look and come out a little while later with a reasonably-priced Uglydoll plush for my friends and a stack of graphic novels I'd been having trouble finding at my local shops at home. I just went to this store and was immediately excited upon walking in. Being a huge fan of certain eras of x men comics, I was overwhelmed with the organization and quantities, they had exactly what I was looking for. As I turned around to take everything in, I noticed some action figures of a tv show a good friend/coworker collects stuff of and tried to take a photo to ask if he had seen them, or wanted them. They were $33 each, for reference. The owner immediately tells me "no photos", to which I respond "oh my bad". He responds 'there's a no photo sign 8 inches in front of you', to which I again respond understandingly. He then pops back up a third time and quips an obviously rehearsed, oddly out of pocket line (paraphrasing) 'a purchase is how I put food on my plate, not a photo.' Lol...ok buddy. First of all, I'm not some random tourist wandering into your store. I enjoy the same things as you, support local stores all the time, am not a complete jerk, and was planning on buying multiple comics at the very least. Had I seen the sign I wouldn't have taken a photo, I'll admit I should have been more aware. Regardless, the response I received after being completely apologetic and understanding was completely insane. Completely 100% insane. I turn around and say 'I was taking a photo to see if a friend wanted it' and he barks back 'THERES 25 NO PHOTO SIGNS'. Dude, I get it. You have tons of annoying people walk through your store which is admittedly awesome, but you simply cannot treat people that way and expect to not be considered an assh*le. You lost what was probably $100 of business from me. I am also a business owner who lives off people purchasing and not stealing an easily stolen form of media. I learned a long time ago (I'm at least ten years younger than you) that treating customers, even stupid, rude or wrong customers like they're all idiots only sets you back. You can respond saying no one reads Yelp reviews (I've never written a yelp review in my life if that says anything), and that one 1 star review isn't going to change anything. That's fine, and you're probably right, but please know if it's business your looking for (which you implied it is), there are things you could be doing better. I'm not the only one to write a review like this, and I think most people would agree, I'm not saying the customers always right, but you were absolutely wrong. Next time simply telling someone nicely one time not to take photos will get the point across, and also hopefully keep them in your store. read more

Meh. Average comic shop. The way the comics that aren't bagged/boarded are placed on the racks seem easily damaged/bent. I had to pass on a few back issues I wanted because they were damaged. Also, they charge 12 cents for every comic that comes bagged, which is pretty much the majority of their comics (a few are boarded). Don't forget to bring cash if you don't want to pay the 50cent processing fee. Average selection though and they also have trades and collectibles. About a third of the floor space is set aside for their movie rental business. The girl that helped me out was pleasantly friendly. Bottom line, I plan on coming back, but only if I'm looking for something specific and have exhausted all my other options. The damaged books is kind of a turn off. read more
