Every time I come to Ocean Beach. Galaxy Comics is a place I visit. The comic shop gets better and better when I come in. Comics and similar related merchandise like toys, shirts, etc. are displayed throughout the shop. The place is also filled with video games just like an arcade. They even have a classic tabletop Pacman/Galaxian. Awesome. The service is friendly. The guy working there greets you when you walk in. My favorite part of the comic book store though is the smell. Seriously. I love the smell of old comic book paper. Smells like a library. If you are an avid reader of vintage books or old comic books. You know what I mean. It is intoxicating. Overall, a solid comic book store. Good selection of titles. The store might not look outright organized but upon closer examination. You will see that it is very well put together. Support local business especially the good ones. OB is lucky to have this cool comic book store here. Buy your comic books and your geek culture merchandise here. This place is a winner.

If you're nice to me, I'll read it to you..

So my little dude is into comics and wanted to come find some new reads. We dropped in after a trip to Bird Rock. We got street parking in front of the Harp, not bad for a Saturday afternoon. This place is exciting for a little kid. I mean, I'm not that into comics, but I can play along. There are full size video games in the front of the store. My son ended up playing Batman and enjoying himself even though he swore only the Lego version was cool. I think it's cool that they rent DVDs here, I don't know of anywhere else that still does that. I'm not a fan of Netflix myself, but to each their own. We mostly just explored the kids section. There's quite a lot of cool stuff in there for the geek in your life. Lots of the Regular Show, Skylanders, Adventure Time, Angry Birds, Batman, Star Wars, ect. There's also some cool figures and other fun toys. My son scored a cool Smurfs figure. He's a little collector, he got home and added it to his collection. He also got a Teen Titans comic and a Lego Batman comic, both of which he read in the car on the way home. My son really enjoyed this store a lot and the owner was very nice to him. He made a point of greeting him and engaging him in conversation, which I always appreciate given that my son does have special needs. It can be harder to draw him into conversation, but he was patient and waited him out. I would definitely return here, not just for the fun comics, but also the great customer service.

Sadly I walked in... happy to be returning to a cool place from my past. The moment I walked in I was greeted with rudeness and dismissive treatment. I was polite and friendly but was received as though I failed some unknown test. One 'lurch-like' skinny ghoul back at the rear register was counting change dropping it into the change drawer with attitude glaring at me as though I committed a crime for coming in... and was absolutely un friendly. Picking up on this vibe... I checked my watch. 15 minutes til closing. I exited immediately. Here's a thought... do your drawer counts after closing or close the store a half hour earlier instead of blaming customers from walking in when you are posting open hours. It was a ridiculous reception. So I went back the next morning to look for a couple things and was treated rudely by another woman behind the counter. Finally a guy back by the music area was actually kind and welcoming and I gladly purchased from him. Thank you for being cool sir. Nobody else was.

I made sure to wash my hands before visiting the shop, though. Inside, it's wall-to-ceiling packed with records, cds, posters, even VHS tapes, cassette tapes, and other music gifts such as stickers, pins, and t-shirts. The more valuable records, like most shops, are high on the walls over the bins. I thought some of the prices seemed higher than you'd see on Discogs, for example, but I'm sure high rent is a factor. There is such a thing as a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush, however. One trend, for better or worse, and this isn't just Cow I'm talking about, is that very few used records, especially original pressings (OGs), are available anymore. More often than not, reissued vinyl, sometimes from questionable providence (e.g. European labels that use cds as the mastering source because of lax copyright laws). Not to say that all reissues are bad because some are well mastered and pressed. Fortunately, more artists are having new albums released on vinyl, which is great except that the average release costs $25‐50 now. Anyhow, my rock and jazz collections are so vast that I only browse what's high on the wall nowadays, except for a few audiophile reissues by Blue Note records, especially their Tone Poet and Classic programs. Great store and vibe, support your independent record shops!
