Stumbled across Bards & Cards as my partner they don't and I had an hour to kill before our dinner…read morereservation. I have been to Gaslamp many times before but never noticed this location. The shop had a wide selection of board games at the front, some books along the shelves, crafting supplies for painting, figurines, and a tabletop play area in the back. There was a tabletop tournament for Magic the Gathering the day I went. The tables were all full and everyone was having a great time. My partner I had recently picked up Wingspan and have been enjoying it a lot so I wanted to pick up another board game for duos. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful here - they answered all the questions I had on board games I was looking for as well as gave me their own personal recommendations. We quickly picked up the 7 Wonders Duel board game and are very excited to test it out. Price is slightly higher than Amazon but worth it to support this business. Highly recommend Bards & Cards and will definitely be coming back.

My parents recently shipped us my Lionel train from 1979. This thing ran every Christmas for years…read morebefore getting boxed up and stored for at least 10 years. The train got here in good shape, but it was missing a piece of track, so I couldn't fully test it. Inside the box was a folded paper with a state-by-state list of hobby shops and train stores that service Lionel trains. The date on the list was 1979. I located San Diego, and there was one shop listed: Frank the Trainman. "Put this in your phone," I told wife, as I joked about how old the manual was. "It says here Frank the frikking Trainman might have the piece we need." She laughed, and said right away Frank the Trainman actually still exists and is OPEN. I flew down here, and was blown away by the stuff in here. Dozens of old box cars and engines along with catalogs, track, and all manner of accoutrement abound in this place. It was truly a pleasure to browse the shelves in this store. It had what seems like 100 years of history just sitting there. Now, Frank has passed on, but the workers here do more than enough to carry on the flame. Good, good people here and very knowledgeable. I bought a maintenance kit and some track, fixed up the set I have, and it runs like a champ. More importantly, my kid loves it, and I feel like a kid again. Thanks, Frank the Trainman!

This place is a time capsule in all the best ways. If you are going here, take in the experience…read more Someday soon there will be no way to go into a hobby store of any kind and see / hold anything. What a shame. Carmen works for a few hours every day, upholding a family business that probably makes no real monetary sense (IMHO). She told me her hours are basically conditional as long as she gets a ride. I called ahead and she picked up. She's there a few hours a day, but so helpful. I needed this 1 odd piece of HO track. I could have searched ebay and waited and hoped, but instead, she saw the picture, knew she had it, and we even found a used one she sold me for $5. They have every scale! Sure, some of the inventory is priced high, but I also have found some really good deals (on some G-scale box cars) here that had some San Diego history. And then you get the experience of a real store, a real chance to find exactly what you need, and a real gem of a woman keeping up her husband and family's tradition and enthusiasm for trains. We're lucky to have this last train shop, as long as it lasts. Come with a smile (and cash only). You won't regret it.

This week I went shopping by myself to return some dog coasters that were given to me as a gift - which did not feel right for me. The owner, "Raffaela" was most gracious in letting me return them, even though I had them in my trunk for almost a year. I exchanged them for a set that I wanted and also bought a pair of beautiful starfish earrings. I proceeded to lose one of the earrings the very next week. When I called and explained what happened, she immediately found another pair of identical ones (the last on the rack) and saved them for me to come in at my convenience to come in and get them. To repeat, ' "a cool little... local shop.. for over 40 years...affordable...whose owner is sweet and helpful..." and my own, shop local for unique products & better service.

What's also impressive was the staff and the selection. I had been shopping al night, and still hadn't found "just the right thing" for a few people on my list. My dog lovers, cat lovers and well I can't say much more, cuz then they'll know what they are getting. This store came through for me! I found things I never would have thought of, or even known to shop for online. It inspired gift ideas for even the hardest people to shop for. I was looking for a particular something. And I only saw one on the shelf. The woman working went into the backstock, checked about 10 boxes and found me a matching "something". That's customer service at its finest. Shop small, shop local you never know what treasures you will find :)
