Called to ask what they would pay for 90% junk silver...which spot is $51.00 dollars which makes $1 of junk silver worth $36.46. Not a serious buyer. When I asked him if he bought silver certificates, he said yes, but he only paid about $1.50 for them. He did not ask the year, the condition, anything. This is kind of nutty - everything you read about silver certificates says that the year and condition matter enormously. My experience was in selling them some old family silver today. I think I visited them many years ago when they were more of a coin store. Today they seem like more of a bullion transfer station. But the world has changed a lot over the years and my guess is that they had to evolve and gold/silver purchase and sale is probably a bigger part of their business today. There seem to be far fewer coin collectors today compared to the 1970s when almost every kid I knew had the blue cardboard coin holders. Also, not a pretty building. Camera equipped doorbell and have to be buzzed in. Then bank teller like security inside. I don't think they wanted that either but Gaithersburg has plenty of urban problems these days and they handle a lot of valuables making them a target for criminals. Look at the dead mall up the road. Point being it's not a pretty place for reasons beyond their control. And then there are the other customers who were in there with us. Some of them seemed a little sketchy. All of this adds up to a less pleasant environment. But when it came to buying our valuables they were professional and friendly and I think we got a fair price. read more

Mostly, this place is a dive. The building is dirty and old. The staff is rude. But, I think they might give you a pretty good price on silver. So, if you have at least 5 or 6 oz of silver, they might buy it from you. Also, they don't take jewelry (contrary to their website) and you have to have at least $100 worth of stuff. I am not sure if these people are interested in selling coins. I called this place to find a coin, not a specific coin, just an older date and the rude fool on the line told me he had no time to find the coin for me. Twice I have called and they act as if they were not interested in doing business. Once they promised to call back and didn't. When you go in they are just a bunch of grumpy older folks that seem discontented with their lot in life. Always in a bad mood and annoyed that you showed up. No frills speakeasy type atmosphere. Considering the crime in today's world they have a good setup for their safety and yours. Yes, the building is old and dated, but if you are buying investment metals, you want best value, not fancy atmosphere which translates to higher premiums! Good prices on bullion purchases. Fair prices paid if you are selling bullion or coin. I can't really comment on the numismatic part of the business, I assume that is all online. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK. They close their doors and refuse to sell gold or silver if price drops more than 5%. I've bought numerous gold bars and silver bullion over the last decade. My last 3 bars didn't test to the purity stamped by recognized assayers. They will take your money when spot is up, refuse to sell when spot is low, and don't check the quality of bullion sold. I had some gold in assay I was thinking of selling, prices were popping and dropping (early Covid19 pandemic days). The owner of the store (named Mark, afaik) quoted me a decent rate but stated that a recent drop in prices would probably be rectified (prices would go back up) shortly. So I waited a day or two and sure enough, Gold popped, I refreshed my quote with Mark, drove out there - wasn't allowed in but he had proxies handle it, (a nephew passed info to his wife/daughter? and she actually took the gold and brought a check). I got no closer than the porch. Made sense though it did feel a bit odd. The owner of this company is a shrewd, older man; straightforward and to the point. On my fifth phone call to him he warmed up to tempid. I'm okay with that. I'm interested in business, not warm fuzzies. He told me some general market things that were extremely helpful and informative. Mark didn't have to recommend I wait, he ended up paying more because of it... but it was the honest thing to do. While I stood on the porch, he paid me what he quoted me. That was that. Other than Google maps blowing a gasket on finding the place (it directs you all over hell and yon, basically you could come in on a main road and make two turns and be there - some railroad bridges and god knows what else results in Google Maps losing a screw) everything went smoothly. Gaithersburg Coin Exchange is not perfect, but they are good. Per what other people have mentioned - I imagine that if you bring a bad attitude you will leave with a worse one and nothing changed in your pockets. I begin all of my reviews with five stars, because there is no reason not to. I then deduct stars based on experience, incidents. I visited this business wanting to sell gold and silver that I have. I'm moving out of state and do not want to take any of it with me. Most of the silver is Reed & Barton. If anybody knows, Reed & Barton are prominent silversmiths in the US. Well, Gaithersburg Coin had no idea who they are. Let me rephrase that, the woman who assisted me did not know. So she looked it up on her computer(I'm assuming she did a quick Google search) and then told me: No, Reed & Barton is mostly nickel, bronze, and other, lesser quality items. Their best stuff is plated. Not quoted because I cannot recall precisely what she said. Anyway, even after that confidence-sapping exchange, I showed her my stuff. All of which I know for a fact is silver, and not plated. While I was handing the items off to her she was making comments like, no I can tell by the weight this is not silver, etc. She did have somebody else take a look, a gentleman behind the glass partition. He said as well that the items were not silver. I thanked them and I left, angry. This experience is one star demerit. The next day, I brought these same items to another business. They confirmed that yes, these items are indeed silver. They bought the items from me with no hassle and no issue. I got a lot of money too! I was very happy. I've omitted the name of the other business because this review is solely about Gaithersburg Coin. I am always open to giving second chances. I went back to Gaithersburg Coin, this time with gold to sell. I'm not sure why, but the employees seriously behaved as if I was a burden being there. They were rude and spoke shortly to me. They evaluated my gold and gave me some lowball offer. I thanked them and left, insulted! This is another star gone. For the attitude and lack of good customer service and simple manners. When I left, I immediately drove to the nearest pawn shop, just to obtain a second dollar value. I know, pawn shops are notorious for giving low offers. But guess what, their offer was higher than Gaithersburg Coin! Significantly higher. A freakin' pawn shop! To add insult to injury, the pawn shop employees were extremely kind! I ended up taking the gold to a dedicated gold buyer and got double what Gaithersburg Coin offered. This is where the third star was lost. Rather needless to say, I will not be returning to, nor recommending Gaithersburg Coin Exchange. read more

I was there today at the Gaithersburg Coin Exchange with my deceased husband's coin collection. I was pleasantly surprised when they offered me over $150 in cash for the coins. I had no idea what it was worth. A few years ago I had been to another coin exchange and got nothing for the same type of coins that my husband had collected. The Gaithersburg Coin Exchange has a good selection of silver coins such as Australian 1 ounce silver dollars and U.S. 1 once silver dollars. A little on the expensive side, but I guess they have to make a profit somehow. The man helping me out was friendly. They had a relatively small selection of gold coins. read more

Had to downsize when I moved, found these guys to buy the uncirculated mint and proof sets my Mom gave me every year since high school for gifts. Unfortunately they were over mass- produced and most never appreciated much in value, but I found their prices very reasonable, walked away with more cash than I expected. The old man who owns the place knows his stuff too, I really respect that. And yes, it is very hard to find- the street numbers make no sense!- so maybe try calling them first. I had an overwhelming positive experience exchanging coins for cash here. They were very pleasant on the phone. I received great service and a good rate for my coins. I'm not sure why others have stated here their business is hard to find: They are a stand-alone store with clear signage in front. All I can say is, don't look for a loud sign, but rather, a wooden sign that whispers, rather than yells, their location. So do not go to this store expecting that they will open on time. Even if you call them from their parking lot at 10:00 they will tell you they will open shortly. Once inside I was "waited" on by staff that seemed more interested in talking to each other than interacting with me, the ONLY customer in their entire store. The process of them buying my silver was drawn out as they again seemed more interested in talking to each other. And maybe I am just silly but when I walk into a place that BUYS Gold and Silver I would expect them to know the day's current market value of those items and not have to spend time looking it up. Little was communicated to me about the process and I was finally given the cash and concluded my transaction. The owner (I am assuming) walked up to my car to tell me that I needed to park correct the next time I came there (there appears to be parking in front of their building but I guess that was not correct). Again I was the ONLY person in the parking lot. Sorry Gaithersberg Coin Exchange there will NEVER be a next time that I would even consider coming to your poorly run business. I have purchased gold and silver coins from this business on a number of occasions. I have found them to be reasonable and very knowledgeable. Contrary to what another reviewer said he had seen in other reviews, I have never had any of their employees be either rude or incompetent. One complaint that was expressed is that it takes a long time to get help. That is sometimes true and sometimes not. I have had that problem, but only when there were a number of other customers (which seems to be the case recently because of the economic uncertainty and the tremendous debt the U.S. is generating). However, there are a limited number of employees, and my experience has been that they help as quickly as they are able. On the whole, I have been a quite satisfied customer. read more
