Unhelpful and rude. Came in for a routine eye exam while visiting back home on December 18th last year. They gave me my prescription with most of the numbers I needed, except for my pupillary distance number. I didn't realize I needed the number to get glasses and was not informed of needing to buy glasses with them in order to get that number. I called last month about possibly getting a new appointment to get the number...no call back. My husband calls and they call back explaining it's standard procedure to not get pupillary distance measured unless we get glasses from them, but goes on to say we can come in and get it checked for free. So which is it? When we ask if my pupillary distance had been recorded at my last appointment under my name before I got married, "Kathy/Kathleen" from the glasses center or front desk - don't really care or remember her name - she kept rudely interrupting us and not letting us ask if it would be under my mom's account since she was the one who purchased my previous pair of glasses from there. This is the clinic that my family has gone to for years since living in Bloomington. All of my hometown friends also frequent here as well, but I can no longer recommend this place. I hope whatever bad day that woman was having gets better and learns to treat people with kindness instead of immediately catching a bad attitude with someone asking a simple question. I've had it with this place. Where to start? First of all they have now gone the route of profit over customer and have a tech do the refraction exam instead of the Dr which I have never experienced in 15 years of wearing contacts. After the exam where I saw the Dr for a total of 3 minutes I was sent home in a pair of trial contacts. I experienced vision issues almost immediately and called the office to let them know. The response was "Your prescription hasn't changed so everything should be fine" After explaining yet again that it wasn't I was told to come by and pick up another set of lenses because there must be something wrong with the first ones. Changed my lenses. Same issue. I called to tell them about it and got the exact same response. After again telling them that my vision was not right and I am having headaches wearing the contacts I was gifted with a visit to the contact department because the Dr said my contacts must not be fitting correctly. In contacts they explained that, you guessed it, my prescription hadn't changed so I shouldn't be having problems. He did then tell me that there was an option in my prescription to up the power........first I heard about this. We tried that out. It still didn't work. Very blurry in my right eye still and still headaches when wearing them. I finally get them to agree to a recheck with the Dr. I waited an hour to see the Dr and was late to an appointment with a client. All this just for the Dr to confirm my prescription and tell me that the issue was that I was sent home the first time with contacts that were not the correct power because they didn't have those in stock. When the lenses were changed at the 2nd visit they upped the power to too high of a power because again, they didn't have my correct one in stock. So All this time I was complaining that something didn't seem right only to be gaslighted that everything was the same as it always was only to find out that my contacts were wrong the entire time AND everyone knew about it. The cherry on top of all of this is that Gailey billed my health insurance for the visit even though I made it very clear that I don't have coverage and I was self pay. I got the bill later for $150 more than the agreed self pay amount because they were billing me at insurance rates. I had to call and have them adjust the bill TWICE before it was correct. Some people would have just paid it which I assume is exactly what they would have liked so they can pocked some extra money. This place used to be my go to but it has gone waaaaay downhill and I'm now beginning my search for new eye care. In my opinion, you should NOT come to Gailey. It isn't worth the literal headaches they give. read more

This is not particular to Bloomington, this includes Peru. The people are lovely when you meet them in person. If they have samples, they share. The doctors are competent; so if that is all you are looking for, then go. I've had doc visits, punctal plug insertion and cataract surgery. My complaints are as follows: *can not typically reach a human being when you call. * will likely not receive a return call unless you call numerous times. *will get wrong or "make an appt.' to get a simple question answered. *The billing is different than what is verbalized by numerous people. *Not all nurses know how to administer the numbing drops causing great discomfort when reading your eye pressure and some need to complete the cycle more than once. *Your bills will not reflect correctly from verbal to statements and there are many many hidden costs. Again, lovely people in person but I need more than that when it comes to my eye care. read more

If you are a plus size person who weighs over 300 looking to have Lasik surgery, this is NOT the place to go. They do not inform you of this when they are doing your pre appointment consultation over the phone prior to your appointment. Had another family member evaluated a couple of months prior who also is over that amount nothing was said then. Drove over two hours round-trip, and was told within five minutes that my family member could not have surgery. Their equipment was not sturdy enough. read more

This eye clinic billing is awful. They are billing me for an exam and soft contact lens check when I don't even wear soft contact lens. I was there for a Sclera recheck. Which is a no charge appt since it was included in the cost of the lens. They coded it wrong but will not admit to this. Apparently they don't make mistakes. I have constantly called and emailed and they state they will look into this and get back to me. They NEVER have. Instead they bill my medical insurance which I have told them over and over not to. I have different eye insurance. All they have to do is check my records and ask the doctor. But they just keep billing me cause they say they are right. I have been there many many times since August for sclera lenses but they won't admit to that. This place is horrible. An update from my earlier review in reference to their comment: Gailey continues to deny and lie. I have my records of calling Gailey multiple times and speaking with billing about this issue and being assured it was a coding issue on their END and it would be resolved with insurance. Even when the appointment was first scheduled questions were asked to ensure their wasn't a billing conflict and the scheduler assured it would not be an issue. It's apparent she made a mistake and so did the billing department multiple times. If I would have been told the real issue in ANY of those calls, I would have been able to appeal with my insurance and have the charge covered. Due to Gailey's misinformation and mistakes, it is now past the insurance window to appeal. I called to have this conversation with billing and was lied to as if the calls never happened and the staff was extremely rude and disrespectful. I have asked for the bill to be discharged or at least reduced because of Gailey's direct involvement in this bill not being paid by insurance. It's absolutely wrong, bad business and a disservice to the loyalty our family has given to Gailey for so many years. read more

Cataracts, Surgery, Racist: My wife and I have been a patient at this eye clinic for more than 20 years. I thought that this company was ethical and cared about providing eye impartially, until my wife had cataracts removed. After surgery she has had one problem after the another. This is the worst company to have cataracts survery. They do not treat Non white people the same as same. If you are a person of color do not have the surgery. We would never have had cataract surgery, had we known that this company is historically partial. My wife has not had a good experience, the eye surgeries has been a total nightmar. read more

Extremely disappointed beware they will not work with you to properly bill your insurance! Gailey Eye Clinic was recommended by my insurance carrier as a preferred eye clinic and a preventive eye screening would be covered at 100%. I used them for my twin daughters kindergarten eye screening. Received a bill from them saying that the claim was denied and I was on the hook for the full amount. Call the insurance company and found that they did not bill the correct address for vision (listed on the back of my card) as well as used the wrong code to bill it. We called in to have them correct it and their response was "no that is the way will bill everything". Overall, in all interactions with their billing staff the two consistent things were that they never courteous or helpful. Avoid this business unless you enjoy hours on the phone trying to get them to bill insurance correctly. read more

DO NOT DO BUSINESS AT GAILEY EYE CLINIC!!!! In March it will be one year since I had eye surgery. I have been scammed out of money from the surgery center. I have made at least 15 calls over a course of almost a year to be given the run around by Lisa and many others. My primary insurance over-paid the surgery center and I paid the surgery center up front and because of the error of the overpayment, my secondary insurance will not pay. I have begged for them to straighten this out because they owe me money but I continue to get the run around. Lisa would not return my calls until I left a VM accusing her of screening the calls and then I got a call back in about 10 minutes. They continue to deny that they owe me money. I was told by Lisa that the adjusted EOB's were sent to my secondary insurance about 2 weeks ago, but wouldn't you know they are still the same EOB's that show the Surgery Center as getting overpaid. Soon it will be a year of this fiasco and now I am being told by my secondary that they will deny it for timely filing. Basically, watch your back because Gailey Eye Clinic and all associated with them are balance billing the hell out of their patients!!!!!! read more

The team at Gailey Eye Clinic has been my primary eyecare office for many years and my time doing LASIK was definitely no exception to the excellent care they've provided. Ray had previously walked me through the process when my partner had the procedure, so I was already very familiar with how things worked; he made sure that all of my questions were answered (and I had a lot of questions). Dr. Harmon and his team were professional and efficient. During the procedure, Dr. Harmon counted down the time during the process, let me know how each step would proceed, and the whole team made me comfortable during the entire procedure. Kind of a goofy system if you wear contact lenses and it takes a while of waiting to get through it all. 1. check in 2. wait for contact lens tech, get examined 3. wait for doc's nurse 4. get eyes dialated, vision checked 5. wait for eyes to dialate 6. get ushered to exam room, wait for eye doc 7. see eye doc for 4 minutes 8. back to contact lens tech to get written copies of your Rx's if you want them and check out This process usually takes at least an hour sometimes a little more. But they are very thorough with all of their testing. Their optical department is pricey - I go elsewhere to get my glasses an online for contact lenses. read more

It's a month after cataract surgery & multifocal lens implants! So far I can see without glasses. Sometimes it's a challenge to read in low light. I still see rings around lights outside, after dark, especially car lights. It looks like bulls eye as seen on a target. Horrible clinic I must say. I 'supposedly' had a visit 6 years ago according to them, and it resulted in a balance of $100. I am not aware of the balance until PanAm, a collection agency, repeatedly harass me with calls. Apparently they did not bother to let me know that the insurance did not go through for 6 YEARS, and conveniently let it stay there as outstanding for the whole time. Apparently it negatively affect my credit record with an outstanding 'collection'. When I call in to ask why, they didn't have much to say and only care about getting the money. My family has been going to this office for years and yesterday unfortunately will be our last time at this office. My husband specifically told the eye technician that we did not want our daughters eyes to be dilated. That request was ignored and they performed it anyways! When my husband found out that they did dilate her eyes he was very upset! When speaking with physician, she was rude, inconsiderate and disrespectful. Very disappointing! The surgery center is very clean, updated and stylish but more importantly the staff makes you feel right at home. Went in needing 225* reading glasses came out after double cataract surgery needing 250* reading glasses. I dont recall anyone telling me that my eyes could be worse after the procedure. I went here because my doctor referred me here for a persistent and nasty case of pink-eye. I am pleased to say it's cleared up, but I have no idea if it's thanks to these guys or not. I arrived at Gailey about 20 minutes before my appointment time, since I was a first-time patient and I figured there'd be some forms to fill out. I needn't have bothered - it was an hour and a half or so before they saw me. And let me tell you - I was not alone in waiting. The entire waiting room was packed to the gills; it was almost claustrophobic. That's the last thing I wanted to do while feeling miserable and half-blind. OK, so after that hour and a half in the waiting room, I had a vision screening. They took my information, checked my vision (I basically didn't have any, given my condition) and 10 minutes later, I was ushered into one of the doctor's .... oh, whoops. Never mind. All of those were full. So I had to go to another waiting room, where I sat for another half-hour or 45 minutes, you know, just because. I was finally brought to one of the doctor's rooms, waited 5-10 minutes in there, and finally - FINALLY - the doctor (Harman?) came in to see me. I figured, "This should be excellent - they have people putting up with two hours of waiting to see this guy!" Nope. He quickly looked at my eyes, rattled off a few things, said, "It'll clear up; you have a cold in your eyes. Here, have a prescription for some steroid eye drops" and was out the door in less than 5 minutes. Ridiculous. I don't feel like he took the time to properly diagnose my eyes; he barely even stuck around for the several questions I had. I figured I waited because he took his time with his patients. Nope - I waited because they pack people in like sardines and evidently triple-book everything. I'm tempted to go with 2 stars - after all, my eyes got better that week - but the place was so shoddily-run, I just can't justify it. I called and cancelled my follow-up appointment today; I don't want to have any more of a relationship with them whatsoever. I don't get why people put up with being treated like cattle when there are other eye clinics in town. read more

That said... it's a labyrinth with friendly and capable staff, doctors and multiple technicians who know what's up and how to handle it, and fair prices. I've been going to Gailey's since I was a little kid. I like the get in get out no hassle way of business. I don't want to spend all day at the eye doctor, personally. I think the office is beautiful and up-to-date and they have a nice assortment of eyewear. I've never had to wait very long here like some people say they have, but then again I often make my appointment for early in the day. There seems to be a large older clientele here, naturally, so I'm sure they get chatty and slow (no disrespect) and slow things down by the end of the day. ;) read more

This was in the 1980's maybe the 90's , had a kid give me a exam for contacts. I had not been able to afford an exam in a few years and my eyes had gotten worse. Come to find out he just reordered the same RX I had before and HE WAS NOT A DOCTOR and NO DOCTOR ever came in to check his work. And now more recently....(2014-2015) My 70 some year old mother was referred there for some surgery where they permanently place a contact on your eye. 13 surgerys later she was still not right. She said they run you in and out like a heard of cattle. 13 mistakes!!! And she still has to wear glasses the rest of her life! NEVER GO THERE FOR THAT PROCEDURE!! read more

I had major anxiety and stress of getting Lasik, but I still wanted to do it! I've been wearing glasses since 2nd grade. I just got Lasik done nearly two months and I'd have to say it is the most painless procedure. It was definitely worth it! Dr. Halpern did an amazing job and Ray does a great job at your consult appoint to inform you of everything you need to know (and yes, this includes all those crazy questions like, "Can I go blind from getting Lasik?" I have three other siblings who wear glasses and I have convinced them to get Lasik as well. I can not emphasize how this procedure has changed my life. Not a fan. My records were transferred to Gailey eye clinic by my optometrist. I have macular degeneration diagnosed by my optometrist. He followed me closely. Went to Gailey first of all there was a charge before you even saw a doctor then another charge after you saw the doctor $48 both times. Some kind of fee. Then the Dr. never even spoke of the macular degeneration or requested any kind of treatment or follow up. I know only treatment is eye vitamins but due to other members of my family having the same condition I knew follow up with a retinal specialist was necessary. I got LASIK surgery and couldn't be more pleased. Ray was fantastic from beginning to end and the doctor did a great job.

I recently took my 81-year-old mother there to get her eye tested. The doctor (I think it was Halperin) briskly told her she has macular degeneration after spending five minutes with her. Told her nothing about the disease, offered no advice except don't drive at night. Didn't tell her what devices might help her see better. Didn't give her any options like shots or surgery or medication or vitamins. I am really disappointed especially since I have been a patient there for 7 years and been very happy with regular eye care and Lasik. Shame on you! read more

If you've ever had the thought, "I wish going to the eye doctor was more like visiting the DMV" then Gailey's is the place for you. You wait in waiting room number 1 for 10-20 minutes after checking in, then the tech calls you back and you have some eye exams with them. Then they take you to waiting room number 2. After waiting in waiting room number 2 for 10-15 minutes, they then take you back to your exam room and check your prescription and then you wait 20-30 minutes after getting your eyes dilated. The doctor then comes in and checks your eyes. You will see that actual doctor for about 5 minutes, max, unless you have any issues. Then, God help you if you actually need to get glasses, because your eyes are still dilated you can't see what the frames look like or the prices. This whole system is not for me in many ways. I don't like that the tech is the one reviewing your prescription. It always felt rushed and took about half the time that it does with my current doctor. I also hate the assembly line method of getting people through the whole process. We had to go back for a quick check-up 8 weeks after an initial exam, which had nothing to do with vision, and had to go through the whole process again, 45 minutes for something that should've taken 5. Lastly, I hate that they dilate your eyes, no choice. My eyes are light colored, which means if I get dilated in the afternoon, it's not until the next morning that they are back to normal. My new doctor has a machine that takes a nice, pretty picture of my eye, no dilation needed, and it's covered by insurance. We were Gailey patients for several years, but I had enough. I now have a doctor who checks my eyes thoroughly. I'm in and out quickly, and I can see to drive home. read more

It's really quite efficient, but lacks that personal touch. It's too much of get them in and get them out. I was looking for a new eye doctor who was more up-to-date on the technology. But, then I lost the personal touch. I ended up with an eye doctor who was too young for me. He couldn't figure out why I couldn't see out of the bi-focal lenses. Said it was the right prescription...so it should work. Then, he sent me home to "get used to it." I not only had to pay extra for the "extra" fittings to make sure they worked and then he wouldn't listen that they weren't working. The contact technicians (2 of them) do a better job of listening and trying to adjust the contacts for you. Once I get this set of contacts worked out - since I've paid over and above my insurance allotment. I might go back to my old doctor. read more

There are a few things you should know about Gaileys before you walk in the door: 1. Block a few hours off of your schedule because you will be waiting. 2. You WILL need glasses. 3. Don't bother bringing your children there -especially for a school required eye exam. Because I chalked it up to one particular technician having little patience for 5 year olds I made the sorry mistake of bringing another one of my children in to Gaileys for one of these school required tests. Small children have a hard time holding still and even if they're sitting still their eyes will likely move. On two separate occasions I have had a technician get quite upset with my kids over this. Believe me when I say that my children are very typical, not especially rowdy, and compliant with most instructions from grown ups. And the angrier these employees got the more the kids would fidget. These people actually acted like they were angry at the kids. But kids get less cooperative after they've been waiting for an hour. In addition, Gaileys will always push to dilate your eyes. One of my children was not at all interested in eye drops. I think the technician was upset I didn't put him in a headlock and pry his eyes open. She was, in fact, so angry that after giving us nasty looks she walked out of the room without a word. We waited for about 5 minutes and she didn't return. Then in dawned on me that I could just leave. So I did. Remember, at Gaileys you will need glasses. Even if your vision is near perfect they will come up with a reason you would benefit from their overpriced glasses. Maybe you have a weak eye muscle. So you've been warned my people! Save your kids from an unhappy healthcare experience-which they will remember! -and save yourself from rip off and frustration. Go anywhere else. read more
