I ordered the summer salad which has chicken, blueberries, strawberries, pecans, and feta cheese. I have gotten this salad previously and it used to be fresh and had lots of flavor. This time, everything fell flat and seemed several days old and the chicken was shredded, almost like super dry canned chicken. Before it was grilled so I'm not sure if I just came on a day before they got fresh produce or what. I'll be back and hope it's more like previous times.

They have a very cool gift shop that you can browse while waiting and we hadn't even seen half of it before our table was ready. The staff was so sweet and concerned about us in the weather. We received water as soon as we were seated and then ordered the Birthday tea. You can buy any of their teas and you can purchase any of the tea sets you see around the restaurant. Every time I looked around I saw something new! We ordered grits, hash browns, French toast and avocado toast. Everything was tasty and the chef even stopped by-which is always a nice touch. The staff even sang Happy Birthday once I informed our server it was my special weekend. The chef gave me bread pudding-now I'm not a bread pudding fan, but it was very good! There was just enough crispy bread and a very smooth and sweet sauce on top. All in all, the space was clean, the service was excellent and the food was solid.

Picture a place that transports you into Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. That tables are all themed according to different characters. The waitress dressed like Alice. Welcome to the Hatter Cafe. This is one of two spots you see recommended for Mentone, Alabama, which is on my route from Nashville to Rome, Georgia. The drive up to the place takes up up a road with some beautiful scenery. You pass through the town of Mentone and the Hatter Cafe is on the right. This is also a bed & breakfast for those wishing to visit nearby Desoto State Park, and its falls, or Cloudlands, which is a bit further. I have included pix of the BnB. Only 2 rooms, but each has a hot tub. The menu is limited and focused, although there are ample choices for even the choosiest of guests. Not surpringly, they have an ample selection of teas (and coffee for the non-tea lover). We sat at the Humpty Dumpty table and decided on the Ribeye with both Mushroom Gravy (mine) and Peppercorn Sauce (hers). Meal starts with a salad made from local produce, which was clear from the freshness of the tomatoes. Off to a great start. Then the steak. The sauces are on the side, so you can opt in or out (in other words, don't be afraid to order one). Of the two sauces, I thought I would like the mushroom gravy more, but the peppercorn was phenomenal. Veggies also local and prepared to perfection. This is one I would gladly return to in the future and may even book a room the next time. Thanks to the staff for allowing us to preview the rooms.

They also have sandwiches and other light lunch options. I asked her what her favorite drink was and she said she liked the honeybee latte (espresso with vanilla syrup and honey) extra sweet. I replied that I like a little coffee in my dessert and asked her to make me one. It was out quickly and looked yummy - maybe a tiny bit small for the price but nothing egregious. Overall, I liked the drink. The ground cinnamon on top was a nice touch. I'm glad she made it extra sweet because regular might not have been quite enough for me. I did think the vanilla had a slightly artificial taste to it that I didn't love, but it also wasn't egregious. I'd probably try a different latte if I return just to explore the other options and see if I found one I liked better, but again, overall, I was satisfied with my experience. This place is worth a visit if you're needing caffeine or a good place to hang out in the area.

As someone who is caffeine-sensitive, it was great that the barista mentioned the amount of espresso in my drink, so that I could adjust it. My husband appreciates that you don't just get a cup of "milk" when you're ordering a larger latte. It's a win-win. The Mango Smoothie was also surprising, my daughter loved it and she is picky!
