Classic dinner with booths and a breakfast bar to sit at. The kitchen staff are true professional short order cooks making really yummy breakfast like it's 1955 and the mayor is fixin to do a walk through. The kitchen is open and SUPER clean. We were passing through Cullman on our way home from one of our weekly summer road trips and decided on the Busy Bee for lunch. This restaurant has been around for a while and I've read about it through various Alabama tourism outlets. It has an interesting recent history in that it was destroyed and rebuilt, I believe during the 2011 tornado outbreak. The inside has kind of a fun, local / diner-y feel to it and they had a lot of business during our visit. We had heard they used to serve German food but it appears they no longer do so, as the menu was limited to more classic American lunch fare such as burgers and sandwiches. The prices are quite competitive and fair. Our waitress was okay - not super friendly, though she warmed some when we asked her about the cute chapel across the street. She didn't check on us too much but was timely with our order and request for a check. My dad got a fried bologna sandwich, my mom got a burger, and I tried the "Eric," which is grilled chicken and jalapeños and cheese sandwiched between Texas toast. Dad and I got fries while mom got onion rings. I'd say everything was about average. My parents both said they'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 but agreed a 3 was appropriate when I explained my own internal ranking guide (2 = wouldn't want to go even if a friend asked; 3 = probably wouldn't go again of my own accord but wouldn't complain if someone else asked to try it). The bologna sandwich was very thick cut. My mom said her burger reminded her of a diner style burger and was fine, but to me it didn't look too appetizing. She was disappointed in the onion rings and liked our fries better. The fries were crispy on the outside but a little mealy on the inside. My chicken sandwich got reaaaaally soggy on the bottom and the chicken was cut very thin/in a weird shape, but the jalapeños were pleasantly spicy and the cheese made it nice and gooey. It was a decent sandwich. Glad to have marked an Alabama institution off the list of places to try! As one of the oldest restaurants in the area, there's a lot of history here. read more

We love coming to The Busy Bee for great comfort food. The meals are always delicious, and the waitstaff provides genuinely courteous service with a smile. My only critique is the daytime cook: he is completely unapproachable, never acknowledges customers, and dampens the otherwise cheerful vibe of the place. If the kitchen staff could match the friendliness of the front of the house, this diner would be an absolute ten out of ten. read more

Fiancée and I came here for lunch today; since we were in Cullman running some errands to get our apartment ready for signing day. We usually drive by this restaurant on the way to our apartment, so we thought we would give it a try. We had to wait a few minutes to get our seat, since the restaurant was packed. I'm assuming it was because today was national burger day. Once we got our seats, we were greeted and got our drinks. We had to wait awhile for our food, which is not a problem. We both got the southwest burger....one with onion rings and one with loaded fries. The food was delicious and I will add this as one of our favorite restaurants so far in Cullman. read more

Patronage appears regular and local. Gots two smaller TVs on, no one watching. Everybody sitting round eating discussing the news of the day. Coffee took all of 1 minute to get to me :0 The Garden Omelette and Grits came in Very nicely and v fresh, with plenty o vege's. Black coffee exceeded expectations. Food-ready speed appears to slow down after 9am. Would def come back for some more super quick eats and mo beguiling country goodness. I had stopped by the Mary Carter store; and upon being asked where a good country breakfast could be found, the cashier quickly replied, "The Busy Bee," directly behind us a block over." I quickly drove over and though I was almost too late for breakfast, my waitress took my order with a smile. The food was great, as was the service. This is the Burger Man, with Best Burgers in America Association, and I was invited to Busy Bee Cafe to score their Bread Burger for them. WOW, it is my first "Bread Burger" that I have ever had. It's a Unique Burger in a class of its own. The bread in the burger takes on its own flavor that a regular beef patty. It's a great burger that offers a different take on a burger. In town for the holiday and settled on this spot for breakfast. A quant diner in the heart of Cullman in the old sears building. We were allowed to sit wherever and the server was over in minimal time to take our drink order. We placed the food order soon after and had our meal in less than 15 minutes. I have the two egg (over medium) breakfast with sausage and biscuit and gravy. The eggs were cooked as ordered, the biscuit and gravy were delicious. The sausage was a little overcooked, my only complaint. The server was nice and accommodating and the diner is nice. This is a spot I would frequent if I lived locally. Hands down, I just tasted the absolute worst burger I've ever had in my life. We stopped by this small, diner type local restaurant because their menu online featured German food, but after we sat down we were told they "can't get anyone to work nights," so they took the German food off the menu. We didn't have time to go somewhere else so we just stayed. When we walked in, I stood at the counter and wasn't acknowledged at all. A worker saw me come in, continued talking to a patron, then rang up a couple customers who approached the counter after me. Finally asked her if we were supposed to sit or order at the counter and she said "oops you can sit down, sorry," and gestures to some booths. The waitress was friendly and when I attempted to order the burger she explained it was a dough burger, which apparently had dough and flour added to the meat. "You'll either like it, or you won't!" I was apprehensive but said I'd try it. Upon receiving the square bread patty on a bun with traditional burger condiments, a single bland, flavorless bite told me the meat to flour ratio was pretty off balance. I broke the "patty" open and looked at it, and if it was more than 5% meat, I'll eat my hat. (And my hat would probably taste better.) We also ordered fried green tomatoes and fried pickles, and they tasted basically the same as the "burger." Very little flavor. My husband had a salad and enjoyed it. When the waitress saw I didn't eat the burger, she removed it from the bill, no questions asked. Almost like she had done it many times before. We were over nighting and were looking for a DDD breakfast experience. We found it at the Busy Bee cafe. Founded in 1919 you get an old style cafe experience for breakfast. We had an omelette and fried eggs. Both came with toast. Eggs came with bacon and biscuits w/ gravy. Omelette toast only. Order 2 sides of hash browns too. Good food and reasonable prices. Would definitely go back. TV's had Fox News on for everyone's enjoyment. read more

If you're in Cullman, AL or on Interstate 65 between Huntsville and Birmingham I strongly suggest you check out the Busy Bee if you hankering for a quick delicious breakfast. I had an egg and cheese biscuit and my youngin' had pancakes and they were delicious and well prepared. The service is the southern charm you would expect from such a nice little safe town. We stopped here for breakfast while traveling. It was busy at 8 am on a Saturday morning. We had to wait for a short time and weren't really greeted when we walked in but other than that had a really good experience. I had the fiesta omelet and biscuit and it was all really yummy. Came here to see the Ave Maria Grotto and stopped in town for a bite. This is a throwback burger joint except this one serves craft draft beer. Nice selection of brew too. I had a southwest burger with o-rings and it was ginormous. Thick tasty applewood bacon on the burger. Others had a cheeseburger and a BLT. All good. The prices are throwback too. I love the idea of this place. It has a cute diner atmosphere with small town charm, but I was terribly disappointed with the food and partly the service. I ordered the breakfast BLT. The toast came out burnt. Shame on the cook for sending it out that way and shame on the waitress for thinking that this was acceptable and bringing it to my table. I didn't complain to the waitress or manager, the moment was lost and I was no longer hungry. The only reason I gave three stars is because my son had the pancakes and said they were great - otherwise it probably would have been a two star review. read more

This is a Cullman landmark and for a good reason. We where invited here by some friends while we where in town for breakfast. Old school diner restaurant that is over a 100 years old. They offer some very cheap breakfast items as well. We ordered a omelet and gravy with toast. The wife ordered a omelet as well. Everything was really good as we expected. They had some of the largest coffee cups I have ever seen at any restaurant as well. If your in Cullman you should stop here and give them a try. You will not regret it. read more

Went in thinking I was going to have German food for lunch but turns out it's only served at Dinner. I was a little bit disappointed and considered leaving but after further review of menu I decided to try the Ribeye steak sandwich and it was delicious, the steak had minimal amount of fat and it was served on grilled bread with lettuce and tomatoes. (Mayo or A One Steak Sauce) and fresh made potato chips on the side and Coca-Cola to drink and served out of a regular fountain not one of those cornucopia of flavors touch screen machines. Affordable. Menu and food are basic. Best feature - meals are cheap. Second choice is Country Crock for twice the quality and twice the price. Best things I had were the coffee and the biscuits at breakfast. Service was a bit rushed and sporadic but friendly enough. Monday lunch - BLT - toasted hard, bacon extra cooked and low on flavor. No sides come with the sandwiches. Downtown Grill is better for lunch, still spartan but much better meal. Tuesday Breakfast - eggs cook well tho yolk was broken, grits were done but would not melt butter, ham steak was pre cooked slightly warmed and 1/8 inch thick. read more
