Only found out I owed money when I was contacted by a collection agency. Initially, I received an invoice via email, but the service treatment was incorrect and I was billed for treatment I did not receive. Wellnow was going to resubmit invoice to my insurance company. I thought this was done since I didn't hear anything until I received a call from collections. I spoke with WellNow on multiple occasions and even have written record of these conversations, but when I call back, I'm told they have no record of these conversations. I questioned the opening message when you call that states the call is recorded. The rep was silent to that. The rep told me he would send an appeal to insurance company but a month later and still not done. The rep had no record of a call regarding this. I was told I had to do myself with the insurance company. To top it off, with the original incorrect invoice, WellNow tried to apply the fee without my consent from my HSA account but it was declined. When I questioned them, their response was I'm responsible for the bill. Don't go here!! Since June I've had nothing but trouble with WellNow and still having trouble. I sent an email to the Norridge location regarding these issues and no response.

My options were limited to Northwestern or Loyola--both excellent systems, but with four-month waiting lists just to establish care. That's when I learned about Oak Street Health. I saw the commercials and thought, why not? To their credit, they get you in quickly. All visits are handled by an ANP, which I don't mind at all--especially since I've been a PA for 35 years. However, you would think that an initial visit would include a complete physical exam. Those days seem to be gone across most medical specialties. The exam amounted to the usual nose, ears, throat, heart, and lungs--and that was it. To be fair, my longtime primary doctor didn't do much more after the first comprehensive exam either. Still, it does make you wonder if more thorough annual exams might catch things earlier. In my case, perhaps my prostate cancer would have been detected sooner. My main complaint, though, is medication refills. Every time you need a refill, you have to call it in--and then wait. And when I say wait, I mean days before anything happens. Whatever happened to routine medications being written for a year, or at least through your next visit? Even after calling, there's still a delay. I do appreciate that Oak Street Health is proactive when it comes to major health issues. But it's the little things--the basics--that I find frustrating. It does make me wonder if some of this changed after they were bought out by CVS and became more corporate-driven.

Having had it up to *here* with Walgreens for a variety of reasons, I finally did some looking…read morearound and found Five Star Pharmacy. Though I'm in Park Ridge, they're near enough that I decided I wanted to give them a try and I like that they're an independent pharmacy. When I gave them a call, I think it was the owner herself that answered (though don't quote me on that). She said that they could do all the transfer stuff to get my prescriptions from Walgreens, and she confirmed that they took my insurance before going too far into the transfer info so that we'd be on the same page. She said that they'd be able to fill my prescription within a few hours once my insurance confirmed it was time to refill, and that was great since there are times I've had to wait a day or more to get it from Walgreens even though I think it's a fairly standard prescription. Then the thing that really surprised me is when she asked if I wanted it to be delivered--and then when I asked the price she said it was free. Another thing Walgreens has done away with in the last year or two is free delivery, so another point in the Five Star Pharmacy. They sent me a link to make the payment, so it was super easy. It was somewhat more expensive than what I paid at Walgreens, but I also don't know if the price of the medicine had increased a bit in the last few months. At any rate it wasn't so much higher that I wouldn't pay it for the quality of service an dot support an independent, local business (and pharmacies are particularly hard to find in the independent variety anymore). Once I made the payment, my prescription came within the next day (it may actually have been a few hours but I just can't recall when I made the payment). I was very pleased with the help, quick response/delivery and follow through. They are testing out a new type of prescription bottle in an effort toward sustainability and that is fantastic. Minor annoyance that the inside has some of the plastic folded in and because of that it makes it nearly impossible for me to just tip out a pill onto my hand since it gets stuck, but obviously not something I'd stop using them over even if they decided to switch to these permanently instead of the standard prescription bottle. I highly recommend them and really suggest that it's worth your while if you want to support a small, independent, women-owned business.
