The lady who helped me seemed kind but was not upfront about the price I would have to pay for my 9 year old daughter's first communion dress to take off 3 inches of the bottom. The dress is 3 layers, 2 outer layers are tool without a hem and an interior layer of polyester. We went in and my daughter was fitted, the woman and I decided on 3 inches off the bottom. This was 5 minutes of the woman's time. Then she wrote her notes about the 3 inches on a 3 ply receipt and told me I should pick the dress up in a week, even told me why I shouldn't wait any later that next week to pick it up because they would be closing the shop and going on vacation. I agreed to pick it up on the next Tuesday as she said. She took my name and number, then handed me the yellow carbon copy of the receipt. I did not ask her how much she estimated the work to be, she did not mention, in the slightest, how much she would charge. I assumed the work would probably be under $50. It is a child's dress and there wasn't much work to be done on it. So, the next Tuesday comes and I head in to pick up the dress. I am told the price would be $99.95! WHAT?!?! You can't be serious, the dress doesn't even cost that much! I ask to talk to the woman and she unapologetically told me that the dress is like a wedding dress, so it costs a lot and that she wrote the price on the receipt. (But of course said absolutely nothing about the estimated cost) I'm sorry but 2 layers of tool with no hem and a cheap polyester interior layer could not take more than an hour to do and that is pushing it. On top of the fact that it is a CHILD'S dress! It is not even close to the size of an adult wedding dress. No sense is made. All the same, I paid her and left. When I got home, I had my daughter try it on. The work was terrible! The tool layers were cut jagged and parts are longer than others. On top of that, the tool wasn't cut to the correct length nor finished with clean cuts, very jagged and poorly done. How was this work worth 100 dollars. I had fix the tool layers myself, it was still dragging the ground. Poor workmanship and poor business practices. I would never recommend this establishment. read more

I received my wedding reception dress on a Wednesday, just three days before my wedding, due to shipping delays. In a panic, I went to Alicia's Alterations and Tailoring that afternoon to ask about expedited alterations. They quoted me $215 (including rush fees) with a Friday afternoon pickup--more than three-quarters of what the dress cost. I asked for some time to think it over, but it was hard to justify the cost. Franctic, I looked into other alteration shops Thursday morning in Bakersfield and came across G&L Tailor. They told me to come as soon as I could in which I was able to come around 11:50am. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm smile and the kindest service. It was a night-and-day difference from my earlier experience at Alicia's Alterations. For the exact SAME alterations, G&L quoted me only $112 with SAME day alterations. The quality was incredible, the service was genuine, and the price was completely fair. G&L Tailor did such an amazing job with my dress for a fraction of the cost and for a quicker return. I highly recommend going to G&L Tailor for all your alteration needs and will continue to come here for anything else i need for alterations. It was a last minute alteration as my dress arrived very close to my wedding date, it was ready within a few days and was absolutely perfect. my review is based ONLY on first encounter after recently moving here to Bakersfield. I called ahead of time and was quite clear that I simply needed two long curtains cut to make as valances and I was new to town, senior. the place was quite a distance and when I finally found it , I learned hard way to go to the back . so I politely mentioned to the man that came out upon entering that it's probably a good idea to let a new customer know about the location and parking in the back. He seemed irritated and in a loud voice told me they been there 20 years! Far from friendly! Then the lady comes out and I showed the curtains, just plain curtains that I wanted to shorten...she cut me off to inform me that it would be $44+ dollars EACH. So I asked her do you mean just to cut the curtain in half and hem it that would cost $44+. Well I believe in paying but not being played. That is outrages. I wasted my gas, my time only to experience rudeness by the first man ( the lady was polite but crazy priced). She could have told me on the phone the price. I'm 66 years old and believe in good customer service. i don't care care how well they sew! Those prices are unreasonable and outrages. Clarifying that I did not get anything sewn or hemmed. This was on my first encounter / interaction and I would never go back. That man could of easily just said okay about my suggestion with regards to parking. I've been coming here for over 12 years and been recommending them to anyone who needs something repaired or taken in. I wear suits daily (I hate it, please let me show up to work in shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. I swear I'll get more work done ). No parking off Stockdale. Entrance is actually behind the building. I took a suit here that I had purchased from indochino.com. When I received the suit, the sleeves were too short and the pants were too loose. The customer service representative at INDOCHINO said they thought that the jacket would probably have to be remade. Took the suit to G & L Tailor And they were able to fix all the issues I had and get my suit really dialed in. The customer service was way above what I expected walking in and I would trust them with every suit I need to have altered. Definitely an easy and pleasant experience with them. I sent my wedding dress there around Thanksgiving for my February wedding, I needed a shorter hem, and I needed it taken in on the sides and the shoulder straps shortened. They had it finished in five days and it looked fantastic. They left it longer in the back, at the seamstress' suggestion, and it ended up looking great in my photos! It wasn't until January that my fiancé and his best man thought to get their suits tailored, and they had a similar experience. They loved it! With wearing a uniform for work, there is a lot of wear and tear, which requires the need for a good tailor or seamstress. I love how quick they are and how reasonable it is to get either minor work, or even some more technical work done. I was charged $57.00 to take in a cotton mini-dress about one size. When I tried on the altered dress at home the next day I noticed that it still fit too large. I quickly called the establishment to inquire if they could take in the dress a bit more and I was assured that that was fine and the alterations would be included in my initial cost. When I returned to the tailor to get the waist taken in just a little bit more, the tailor said it would cost an additional $24.00. When I explained that I had been told it would be no additional charge, the tailor became very irate and reprimanded me for taking the dress home in the first place. I explained that I had not been aware that it was necessary for me to raise concerns about the fit before taking the dress home because it was my first time bringing an item to them, at which point she responded "it will probably be the last." Ultimately, I left without having them do the additional alterations because I had lost faith in their professionalism and ability to complete high caliber work. read more

Was looking for a place to tailor my sports coat. I called men's wearhouse which is where I normally get my alterations done. They told me they were swamped and recommended this place to me. I figured they would not refer me to a place without a good reputation. I showed up and was greeted by a friendly worker who is tied to the owner, I'm assuming that this is a small family ran business. I told him what I needed and that I needed to expedite my order if possible. He told me that it would cost 10.00 additional dollars to get it done next day. I didn't mind it as I was headed out of the country and needed it right away. He measured my sleeves and said it will be done by noon tomorrow. I went back the next day and the sleeves were perfect! It was done right on time as he said. The jacket was a perfect fit! Needless to say, I found my new place to give my business to for my alterations. Quality work, professional and friendly service! I came at the very last minute to get my bridesmaid dress altered and upon arrival I was acknowledged and greeted by a gentlemen. At the time he was helping another costumer but he was able to call in another women to help me. I believe her name was Mirian. She was able to fix the lose strap, the missing hook on the back of my dress, as well as alter the bottom of my dress so it wouldn't drag while I walked or danced. I picked up the following day and I think randy was the one who had range me up at the register and broke down what was adjusted as well as the pricing. I tried my dress back on at home and it fit perfect! Absolutely recommend this place, customer service is good, Miran was so sweet and helped me out and randy was attentive as well. I believe he was the one who I had seen when I first came in. I did pay extra because of rush but of course that was understandable and I do not regret paying the extra since my dress was done perfectly in a span of 24hours.
