So days and nights gorging on the most sinfully delicious tapas, we decided to take a sushi break. After reading some mouth watering reviews, we decided to make a stop at this establishment. Upon first walking in, the quaint minimalist decor is reminiscent of little shops in Japan, so I was pretty excited. The menu was simple and listed all of the staples so we ordered an assortment of tuna, salmon, salmon roe, red snapper, tempura shrimp roll sushi and hand rolls to miso pork, salmon collar, oyster shooters, scallop/salmon roe ceviche and yakisoba. Well after ordering all that who wouldn't be excited? So as the second table seated, we received our drinks and patiently waited for our feast to come.... and waited and waited... and waited....and.......waited. Patrons continued to come in and get seated and ordered as well. As others started feasting, we continued sipping on our drinks and sharing great conversation. More came in, ordered and ate... others came in ordered, then left (and we later found out.. without eating). After over an hour of waiting, we finally started to receive some of our dishes. The miso pork was quite delicious and melt in your mouth tender (ie deliciously fatty). The agedashi tofu was... ok, but the sauce was overly salty. The heavy handed seasoning continued in the other hot dishes as the salmon collar was tender and the skin was perfectly crisp, but was quite salty. The yakisoba-- again, heavily salted.
The shooters and ceviche came out and were also overly salty, but had somewhat ok flavor otherwise and would have benefited from citrus (ideally yuzu) and shisho to help round out the flavor. The sushi, was just average in flavor and sushi rice well seasoned, but the slices of fish were way too thin and reminiscent of a low end all you can eat buffet trying to stretch out a piece of fish or scallop. For example, typically, one sea scallop will be used for one piece of sushi, but here, it seems like they are trying to stretch one scallop across 4 pieces of sushi... and that continued for the other types of nigiri as well. So, due to somewhat descent flavor, they got an extra star (total of 2). Even the sushi chef/manager spoke that their restaurant has never had much business and there is another sushi restaurant in town that is the best. Well, take this mediocre quality sushi and marry it with the most incredibly slow service known to human kind, this awards a 2-star rating. While we were seated at a table, we also had a friend that decided to sit at the sushi bar to converse with the chef. Now keep in mind we were the second table seated after the restaurant opened.... well our friends at our table didn't get their food (two rolls-- 4 pieces each) until 2 hours AFTER we placed our order. In fact, the waited approached our table and said the kitchen was closing and my friends hadn't even received any of their food at all! Oh and during this time, the other tables all got their food and had finished eating. Management, upon realization of their error made no attempt at remedying the situation, offered no discount or anything whatsoever aside from feeble attempts at excuses. Needless to say, this place is not only over priced for food that is just ok and your money and time are better spent elsewhere. read more
