The only salon on Roosevelt Island. It is bustling with activity - making a recommendation in advance is highly recommended. Card payments are an extra 9% of the actual service price. Women haircut is $50 ($54.5) with a card, men haircut is $30 etc. Being the only option on Roosevelt Island, I'd praise it for convenience, but not sure if they offer the best rates in the the vicinity. We live on the island so we go here mostly out of convenience since it's like a 3 minute walk. The salon is clean, the pricing is very reasonable, and it's usually not too busy. I like that they're efficient, my husband's haircuts are quite fast. The men's haircuts are generally fine, sometimes it's inconsistent but nothing crazy bad. read more

I walked in on a weekday and only had to wait a few minutes before being helped. I was in and out in probably 30 minutes after getting my hair washed and a standard women's haircut. Only rating 4 stars because it was pretty average; not my best haircut and certainly not my worst. Just a great, middle of the line place that actually charges the price they advertise. Dreadful experience...the attitude toward clients is terrible, they talk to you like to a stupid. I sent my 14 years old daughter and they charged $60 without washing her hair, not mentioning the terrible haircut, same happened to my husband. Called ahead to make sure they take walk ins. I arrived a few minutes late, but they honored my time. Although there was only one client there. lol. They have plastic liners between chairs. My stylist was a man. He wore a mask. He didn't say much. He may have been having a bad day? He gave me a good haircut. It took about 15 minutes. I went to pay and it said something about paying 10% less with cash. So I asked about that and he said it was for card paying customers. I recommend the signage be corrected. I'll likely be back. WORST SALON EVER! STAY CLEAR! The women hacked off about 5 inches of my hair when I just asked for layers and angles. Then it was a straight across cut not a soft round finish at the bottom. To add to it there was a chunk missing and the women tried to fix it but moving my other part of my hair over it. Then when she dried it she used NO hair serum nor a brush just her fingers and the dryer so I had to go home and style it because it was a huge mess. If you have a little boy, this is the best place in Manhattan to come get his hair cut. Boris does the little boys' haircuts and he is a-maz-ing. His personality is quiet and understated, so he doesn't get in their face or try too hard to be entertaining. He has a young son himself, so he is used to (and patient with) wiggly toddlers. And the haircuts he gives are excellent. The first time my son got a haircut, I took him to some expensive UES place and he and I were both totally overwhelmed. TV screens, bubbles, dolls and toys for sale. The haircut cost something like 45 dollars, and was mediocre. I swore never again, and I started taking my son to Boris, who cuts my husband's hair. He does such a fantastic job, and Alexander LOVES him. He constantly asks if we can go see "Mr Boyyis." Even if you live across the river, it is honestly worth it to come one stop on the F line (or the tram) and come here. The haircut is 15 dollars, your kid will be happy and not stressed or overwhelmed, and his hair will look great. read more

I came into Fusion for a simple cut because it's close to home, and I was planning to have a keratin straightening treatment at a salon in Midtown (which charges more based on the length of your hair) - but Fusion offered the keratin treatment for only $149 (my hair is below my shoulders). Hair OSH charges about $500 for it, so I was grateful to find a place that was convenient and offered the same service I needed. I still have my Groupon for Hair OSH to use by October, so when this one fades out more (which will be soon), I'll try them out there. The stylist here at Fusion did a great job, and the manager was also friendly. My typical salons offer beverages, wine, etc., but I don't think anyone offered me anything. It seems like more of a Quick-Cut barber type of place; nothing very fancy. The Keratin straightening started fading quickly about one month after the treatment. This place is great to visit for a quick haircut (I haven't had coloring done there), but would recommend their really good prices on the Keratin straightening! read more

My lady and I came in to get our own respected hair styles. The service was excellent. The workers were polite and very helpful. My lady wanted a wash and set as well as a trim of her side bangs. I wanted a shape up as well as a fade cut. We both recieved excatly what we asked for and then some. They took care of us and treated us like family. We were both satisfied with our cuts and styles and would definitely recommend this salon to everyone. The price is affordable and well worth it. read more

Terrible terrible terrible! The lady who cut my roommate's hair did not listen to what she wanted at all! My roommate went for a trim and ended up getting inches chopped off. She also got an angled cut in the front when she only wanted a few short pieces of hair to frame her face. It was a super rushed, 10-minute cut because there was another client waiting. Not only are the stylists incompetent but also unprofessional. Walking in, someone very close to me had the intention of a double process bleaching to lift the color of his hair while leaving the roots. The stylist who had worked on his hair said somethings along the lines of "well lets give it a shot."...If she were a professional and this was out of the realm of her abilities than she should have said, "I'm sorry but I don't think I will be able to get your desired style."... Strike one. After the first process his hair was yellow (as expected) but instead of normal toner, his stylist added something to make his hair a streaky bubble gum pink...Strike two. After being her mistake she asked if he wanted a different dye to FIX her mistake. But his being fed up with the unprofessional stylist and the fact that he had streaky pink and damaged hair walked out...Strike three. And on top of it all after seeing her mistakes she said and I quote... "well at least there weren't any customers in the store." STRIKE FOUR. First of all he himself was supposed to be a paying customer and should be treated as such and second of all if you are so concerned about your image than you shouldn't have...a) took on a style job that you could not do...b) messed up his hair with no solution in the first place. QUICK UPDATE FROM ORIGINAL POST: Bumping up the review from 2 to 4 stars because the owner of the salon just called me and was very apologetic for my recent experience. He offered to refund what I had paid. Alternatively, I suggested if they want to try to fix the color, I would be happy if they kept money. Absolutely so nice of him to go out of his way to do this, most other salon owners would ignore a bad experience. I am actually looking forward to going back in. Will post pictures after I visit them again to show the corrected hair color. ---- Original Post from 4/28: I really wanted to love this place, given the convenience of it being the only place on the island. I went there twice hoping my experience was maybe was a fluke the first time. I really don't want to rant, but rather outline a few things from my experiences to help you make a better decision before you spend any money here: - There are a ton of men and kids getting haircuts. On the reviews they seem to do a good job with this. I think this is what's boosting the high reviews/ ratings here. - If you are getting a color treatment, keep it simple. Like REALLY simple and don't expect it to look like the photos you show for reference. (Note: balayage would extend beyond "simple") - If you are blond or getting any kind of blond treatment, find another salon. They can only manage brunette color and admitted that they mixed the blond formula wrong (resulting in some mousey my light brown color). Her solution was to try and leave toner on but it didn't do anything. There was no resolution or compensation on their mistake. - They're quite sloppy with color processing and application. The first time around I had a large blotch on my hairline, extremely noticeable. This past time the application of balayage left massive dark brown splotches. Thankfully it's closer to the nape of my neck this time. - They will charge you between $20-30 extra for a "styling" fee which essentially is drying your hair. There was no styling done, it was quite frizzy and you will honestly leave looking a bit in shambles. Keep in mind this is for all services (color, cut) whereas some salons might include that as a part of the service. You'd think they'd want to see the results of their coloring work? Or trim? Don't expect to be able to head out after getting your hair done. If you have no expectations, are okay with styling your own hair and getting some basic cut or one process color, this might be a good salon for you. read more

I've been going to Tanya for color for almost 2 years. She is consistently excellent in terms of identifying good color, being organized and professional, taking care and not pulling my hair or ears. She is a bit quiet which I like rather than a gabby stylist. She also did my daughter's ombré balayage and it looked great and lasted a year (very long hair). The manager is also very polite. I have taken my toddler there for a hair cut a few times and always had a good experience however today I thought it was exceptional. Not only did Nelly cut my two year olds hair quickly she did a great job! She also was happy to cut my hair (which I needed desperately) on the spot. I've been going to Fusion Salon for about four years now and it has been great. I'm a resident on the island and had tried several placed in Manhattan before landing at Fusion Salon - which came recommended by my roommates. Boris is fantastic and remembers my name, remembers exactly how I like my hair, even remembers when I've switched jobs or gone on vacation (which I like). I was a bit pressed for time, and really wanted someone else to wash and blow-dry my hair (instead of doing it myself). To begin with, I was 15 mins late for my appointment, for which I apologized for, and acknowledge that that's not cool. The guy in front took one look at my hair and asked me whether my hair can be straightened (I have natural, kinky hair), to which I said "Yes, it can, and I've been here before." I know that this place isn't a natural hair salon, but I know what my hair can and can't do too. I was starting to feel like an unwelcomed guest, but I kept quiet and waited for them to decide whether or not they were going to service me. Finally they agree, and the lady (don't remember her name) walked me to the back for my wash. I had brought my own products, and showed her what was what. I think the actual wash and blow-dry experience went pretty well, and my hair looked fine. After the blow-dry, she passed a flat-iron, throughout my hair, which I thought was part of the service. The trouble started when I went to pay, and he quoted me a price $10 more than what was on the website. I was expecting this, since most places charge more by length or texture, so no big deal. However, first he said it was more because of "my type of hair", then he said that the flat iron was extra. So I told him politely that those are things they should disclose before the service, not after, and he started getting huffy with me. I wasn't even arguing about the price itself, rather the manner in which it was quoted. I felt like they snuck in the extras, and I was simply trying to make a point. Anyways, I paid and left there. Having recently moved to Roosevelt Island, I searched for local places to get my hair cut & colored. It's a scary thing to trust someone new with your hair! I'm very happy that I found Fusion and that I trusted Elena! My color update is fantastic and I'm beyond pleased with the cut. I showed her 1 photo and got exactly what I wanted. She is a master with scissors and obviously knows her craft quite well. I will most certainly go back and already told my husband to plan on going for his next cut as well. I sure hope someone local asks me about my hair because I will gladly talk up Fusion and Elena and recommend both! read more
