08/24/25 It's been a while since we stopped in, but we're glad we came back. The Calamari special appetizer was excellent. The Branzino with mashed potatoes and broccoli rabe with a lemon caper sauce was good enough and a portion big enough for a nice lunch the next day. Went here tonight for the first and last time . Food was excellent , service was absolutely AWFUL . I couldn't even speak with a manager nobody was there when we left and when I called after leaving our waitress identified herself as the manager on the phone . Our water glasses were empty , it was a hassle to get refills . The waitress had an attitude when we asked after quite some time if we could place our dinner order ! The place is not oversized yet not too small. Easy to get a reservation, very accommodating. Specials are spectacular, pricing is really good and a BYOB. Spectacular blending of favors on both the apps and the entrées. I suspect the kitchen is more like a culinary chemistry experiment. Fantastic experience. I've had Fusion 27 on my list for close to two years (basically since they opened) and finally had an opportunity to come here for dinner on Monday night with one of my chums. It lived up to the hype, and then some - and definitely made me feel less guilty about having a full-on, legit meal that early in the week. This is also my first full-throated endorsement of a restaurant less than five minutes from where I live in literally years, probably since Bivio sadly abandoned me for the greener grass of Montclair. The one caveat for me here is the parking situation. Even though I live one town over from Totowa, I rarely come over here because of the chaos of Union Boulevard and its constant traffic lights and turning lanes; it can take you a solid 10 minutes to drive all the way through the main drag. There's a small parking lot directly behind this building that you can use (and we did), but it was also 5PM right when Fusion 27 opened, and spots were definitely limited. You should be able to find street parking nearby, but it's not as clear-cut as you'd like. We didn't make reservations but were able to secure a table in the first room by the entrance easily (we were told the second room off to the side was reserved). I was all about the service. Everyone we interacted with was well-trained, friendly and hospitable. My chum literally went to the school of hospitality and can put restaurants through the wringer, but everyone was up to the challenge, including a young woman making her debut that night announcing the specials and desserts. She had probably 10 items or so to relay (all with a solid variety of ingredients) and handled the assignment with aplomb. The Specials menu got a workout from us; I believe both apps we ordered came from there - the burrata and this watermelon/strawberry salad - and they were both great. The burrata was served on a grilled slice of pineapple, which was a solid mix of flavors. And I'm not a huge salad person but this was the best one I've probably ever had. I definitely prefer the sweeter ones, and this had a goat cheese topping with a purple glaze or something on it that was just magnificent (apologies if I'm butchering the description). I had to be mildly coerced into the salad to begin, but I retracted my reservations on that quickly and would get it again if presented. Good luck finding another review or situation where I talk that highly of salads. It's not happening. I perused the dinner menu earlier in the day and despite being tempted by some of the entrees presented by our specials guru, I stuck to my guns and went with the short ribs/brown butter gnocchi. Not a criticism, but I was surprised that the gnocchi was a little crunchy/baked; the texture wasn't what I was expecting based on my experience of ordering gnocchi-centric dishes from Italian restaurants. The short ribs were very good - not the absolute best I've ever had, but tender and flavorful. As an added bonus (and we can probably thank the apps for this), I had some left over for the following day's lunch and got to show it off to co-workers (all of whom were astounded that I had a giant meal on a Monday and fixated more on that than the quality of the food. Sigh.). Everything held up VERY well on day two. That should have been the end of this adventure, but of course a giant brownie sundae showed up as well. I think we ended up leaving a bite or two on the table but that's only because max stomach capacity had been reached. The brownie was very, very moist, to the point where I likened it to a lava cake. We lingered for a while toward the end of the meal and despite the restaurant being pretty busy (though not overwhelmingly so), I really liked that the staff had a solid gauge on the situation and left us to our own devices. Especially in this post-COVID world, I feel like most places are prone to turning the tables over as quickly as possible, but that wasn't the case here, at least when we went. The party I was with ordered some apps and one of them was the calamari,I will tell you this, there was no way in the world it should have made it to the table.Worst CalamariI ever tasted and seen.I just can't get past this ,thats how bad the calamari was. Some of the food was cold and had no flavor. They are getting lazy.The best thing about this place are the waitress that work here. I have been here at least 5 times with a group of ten or more and the owner has never come to our table and ask how things are going. I came to Fusion 27 on a whim after being indecisive on where to have an early Saturday dinner. Seems like you need to make a reservation but they were able to accommodate two of us outside as a walk in. Their outside area is cute and cozy, the perfect place to enjoy some good food and wine on an unseasonably warm October evening. We came so early we were the only ones in the restaurant at this point lol Everything on the menu sounded delicious. It was hard to narrow down what to order since everything sounded so good. We started with the shrimp and avocado tortilla app and the coconut encrusted burrata special. Both of these were out of this world. The burrata was so unique. It had a mango sauce with grilled asparagus underneath. So so so good. For entrees I had the seared tuna which was light and flavorful. The real winner was the steak and pineapple rice special. Overall view: unimpressive and they are trying to be something they have not yet achieved. We decided to try this restaurant out due to the previously great reviews on yelp. Usually yelp doesn't do me wrong. On arrival, I didn't see a parking lot but there was street parking that was easy enough to find, and on a typically busy night for outings. We were seated right away and I must say, the service staff were great for the most part. We felt welcomed and the servers took time to interact with us. They failed to impress later on but I will say more on that later. Their menu itself is very short but they do this odd thing where the server shows you the specials with images of them. It is effectively a 5 minute powerpoint presentation. They have way too many specials. Yes, you can scan a QR code and view it again if you forgot any of it (doubt most people remember most of them anyway due to the length of the presentation), but how are things a "special" if you have like 15 of them? We decided to order appetizers from the specials list and entrees from the regular menu. The apps consisted of the mozzarella sticks with crab meat and the seared Tuna roll. They were 'meh' at best. The tuna did not taste very fresh and it was completely under seasoned. The mozzarella sticks with crabmeat tasted like...mozzarella sticks and the tiniest hint of crab. The worse part of it were the portions for the prices for those apps. TWO mozzarella sticks for 23 dollars. like 3 Tuna pieces for 23 dollars as well. For something that tasted just ok, for that portion size, the price is robbery. No wonder they don't give you the price when they tell you the specials. It is ridiculously priced out. In fact, we heard on of the waiters tell another patron that they would always recommend the specials if comparing specials with the regular menu. Well duh, higher priced dishes equals a larger tip. Don't be fooled, make sure to scope the prices. Caveat emptor. As for the entrees, the steak with fries was a thin piece of what looked like hanger steak and ... fries with ketchup. The meat was completely over cooked and the fries were limp and soggy. You'd get the same thing at a dive bar for a third of the price. Again, simply not worth it. The Ginger Shrimp Penne was interesting. The flavor was nice I must admit but not very gingery. In fact, it was more like sauteed shrimp in a soupy red sauce. Not what I expected but it wasn't horrible. Just again, way over priced for something easily done at home. Now of course, they can charge whatever they want, but overall the taste and portion sizes are just too ridiculous. You'd think that it must be fancy dining right? Nope, it got as loud and chaotic as a $1 beer night in some sports bar downtown. They try to make it a quaint setting but it fails big time. So you get to eat your soggy fries in a crazy environment. Yikes. At the end, they will even charge you a fee for using a credit card. I just find that bad business practice. The fee that they are supposed to pay the credit card company for the convenience on their patrons so that they actually get more patrons is passed on to the patrons. It never makes sense. This was fine during COVID but it has been years out now. Finally, as the night was coming to a close, we just had about enough and wanted to leave and could not for the life of us find a waiter available. Finally we just had to give it to the host. It just ended the night on a very sour note. I actually liked the idea of this restaurant. Take traditional Italian dishes and introducing a slight twist. With how conservative most Italian restaurants are, it is refreshing to see someone try something different. But unfortunately they fall short of flavor on texture. To add an unreasonable price on top of that fails to impress. Would I ever go back? No. Would I recommend it to my friends? No. But would I discourage someone from trying it? No. This restaurant has so much potential, perhaps it may be better another night. read more

We found this gem on Yelp n thought we'd stop by for dinner. Great decision. Friendly welcoming staff. Jose showed us all the specials on how I pad. We had the berry truffle salad which was so refreshing w greens, pineapple, shredded mango , caramelized walnuts n goat cheese- for a hot summer day. The calamari special w balsamic drizzle was good too. For entrees we had the bronzino special n the halibut special. Generous portions. There are not enough good words for this place. We ordered a take out lunch for a first try. So impressed. I had the salmon with pappys and mango . The fresh was so fresh and the flavors so well blended. It came with a potato croquette and yummy veggie rice. My coworkers tried their sandwiches and chicken Marsala. Mother's Day Disaster. I booked a reservation 6 weeks in advance for a party of 6 for outdoor seating for 5:00 pm. When we arrived at 5 pm we were told we had to sit inside and there would be a short wait. I told the front desk that I requested outside at the time of my reservation. This place largely serves Italian food, with some dishes having a bit of Latin flare. Place is perfect because you can satisfy everyone at the table. You can order signature Italian favorites (I had Braised Short ribs w brown butter gnocchi, gnocchi had a little crisp to it too - yummy!) OR if you're in the mood for something a little off the beaten path, you can try one of their specials that night (my Fiancée had the seared ahi tuna w mango, avocado, and drizzled sauce - nom noms). The owner Jose gives a fantastic presentation on the iPad of all the specials that evening. We loved this because you very clear idea of the different dishes, which helps make it easier to decide (or just makes everything look really good and harder to decide ). First time here, found them through Open Table. Small, but intimate space. We were celebrating an anniversary. Nice lighting. Seating is tight in some spots, but they were agreeable to moving patrons to more comfortable tables if requested. We had the calamari appetizer--delicious. Fusion 27 is an interesting restaurant. Most of what we ate was pretty much Italian cuisine; not much fusion. But there were some dishes that had a Latin twist, for some reason we didn't order those - will have to try next time. The regular salad was very good; the special watermelon salad was overpowered by fake truffle oil. The calamari was interesting and tasty. My double cut pork chop (from the specials menu) stuffed with proscuitto, mozz and eggplant, with a mushroom sauce was excellent and the cod (also on the specials) was enjoyed by the others at my table. All in all, there are a ton of Italian restaurants in the area to choose from, but the service and food were excellent so we'll be back. read more
