The cashier was immediately welcoming and shared that local high school students are mainly the artists on display, with all manner of things for sale. The main draw here is used books, arranged by topic, but there's artwork and antiques mixed in everywhere. I bought a few charms and some junk journaling style post cards. It's one of those places you don't really know what you want to buy until something speaks to you. Prices are reasonable, you can tell this is more of a passion shop. I feel like maybe it was once the site of something old and historic, but now it's mostly just a modern series of fairly common brand shops and such, with some local flavor dropped in. Our main destination was Sisters Coffee, and that experience was great. Parking and navigation is tricky because the lots are spaced out and small, and some have only one way to get in and out. It's great if you want to walk, not so great driving. Bottom line, if you want history, look elsewhere. If you want to shop 'till you drop, this is the place.

The Whittle Shop, Vance and Jay, were prompt and arrived on the appointed time to give us an…read moreestimate for our project. We were creating a Bald Eagle sculpture in flight from a Ponderosa that we had to remove due to beetle blight. Vance coordinated on site with the tree removal company the height to leave as a stump. When the dead part of the tree was removed, Vance and Jay started the project on the appointed date, and we left on vacation. We received daily updates with photos. When we returned from vacation the project was complete and the area surround the project was clean. All our neighbors were as impressed with the project as we were. We've had people stop and comment on the sculpture and the craftsmanship creating it. If we have to take another tree down, we'll have The Whittle Shop create another sculpture.

He built an enclosure to keep much of the carving debris localized. He was in constant communication with us as to when he would arrive each day and if he was going to be late, would let us know. Very few contractors seem to do that today! He also carved an adorable bear for a log post on the front deck - a welcome addition. Since most of our job was indoors, he was very conscious of the disruption to our daily lives and home and worked quickly and efficiently, as much as his artistic senses would allow! I would highly recommend the Whittle Shop for your next carving dream - or visit his shop in Redmond, OR for a huge selection of carved pieces.

The gallery can be accessed either from the interior of the building or from Tin Pan Alley. - Rotating contemporary art on display in a moderately-sized gallery space. Depending on the particular exhibit, you'll find photography, drawing, painting, mixed-media and sculpture by individual artists and group shows. - Features both upcoming and established artists such as Bend residents Nancy Floyd (2022 Guggenheim Fellow), Paula Bullwinkle, Bill Hoppe and Christian Brown, as well as regional artists such as April Bey and Sadie Barnette. - As with many contemporary art galleries, some of the work revolves around current societal issues. The recent COBIPOC exhibit, "Be Nice (White) ... You're in Bend," examined the notion that Central Oregon lacked racial diversity and sought to increase the visibility of the BIPOC community. Another recent show, "Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts," featured work from the Umatilla tribes in Eastern Oregon. - Scalehouse was founded in part by local art legend Patricia Clark who did much to promote art and artists in Central Oregon.
