You know that saying that good things come in threes? Well, it happened to me yesterday…read more I found out through Los Rolling Tacos, a food truck that travels around the Wellington area, that it would be at Riverside Park for the Cambridge Kin Carnival. Three great things: - Riverside Park - Cambridge Kin Carnival - Los Rolling Tacos This review will cover all three. The Cambridge Kin Carnival hasn't been on since the pandemic hit in 2020. It finally returned this year. I grew up in the Beaches. There used to be a carnival every year at Greenwood Racetrack, which used to be on the southwest corner of Woodbine Avenue and Queen Street East. These days, it's a community of townhouses, condos, and businesses. I loved that carnival. Rides. Food. Games. So much fun and great memories! Riverside Park is huge. It makes sense why this park is ideal for large events. This carnival is pretty large to accommodate all the rides, games, and food trucks. I only caught what I felt was a subsection of the entire park. It has a greenhouse, a baseball diamond, a playground, a hiking trail, and lots of picnic tables. It's stunning with all the greenery and flowers. The entrance is cool. There is a dedication to World War II veterans. You also encounter a rock that is over a billion years old. Wow! There is parking at this park. It's all free. However, with the carnival, spaces were all taken and folks were parking off to the side next to the trees, parallel to Grand River. I parked across the street where there were more spots. I realized later that I had parked behind the Preston Electric Power House, which is deemed a historic site. It was free parking, too. The carnival was so much fun. Games catered more to kids, but adults were playing them like kids, too. Each play was 25 cents, which was reminiscent to how much it was when I was a kid. Everything from bashing gophers to playing the bowling game was all there. There were plenty of rides. You need to get tickets first before going on the rides. Some were catered to kids and those who want something calmer, such as the carousel and ferris wheel. If you are more adventurous, there were the Ali Baba and Avalanche rides. Expect lots of screaming when you are in the vicinity. There were several food trucks. The one with ice cream and popsicles had the most business. I was ready for lunch, so I had tacos from Los Rolling Taco. I got three tacos for $18: - Birria (beef) - Al pastor (pork) - Tinga (chicken) All three were gluten-free. The filling in all tacos were generous. The proteins were flavourful and tender. I enjoyed every taco and dipping them into the sauces that accompanied them. I bought a can of Diet Coke. Sadly, I didn't realize that I didn't get it until I was halfway through eating. I went back to the truck to get it. The man thought that he had given it to me. Nope, I needed to wash my food down. He gave me a can. It wasn't cold, which was the only minor damper to my experience. This truck accepted debit and credit cards. I brought cash and didn't use it, but it was there just in case. The carnival had a blocked-off area with benches. I asked if I could eat in there. The nice security guy said yes as long as I was 19 years of age and older. Sweet! It was by the stage where a dance troop was about to showcase their routines. There are washrooms everywhere. It was such a large area that it was comfortable walking around, even with so many folks attending the carnival. It is a picturesque park, especially by the river and where the greenhouse is. I'd love to return again just to walk around when there isn't a major carnival happening! It was such a great visit. I'm so glad that I took in a carnival with great food at a wonderful park. (182)

It was a summer weekday and although I figured it might have additional traffic with kids on school break, I could tell just by turning into the parking lot that it wasn't crowded. What I did find a little strange was the constant signage and website warnings to book tickets online and not on-site. I guess that might have been an issue in the past but it certainly wasn't a problem the day I visited. I paid my entrance fee and walked the short distance back to the conservatory area. There's really good signage to let you know what species you're seeing, and their habits. What I didn't think of was all the butterfly remains I'd see on the grounds...a little disconcerting at first but ok, what did I expect! The sanctuary is easily accessible. It's very warm and humid, but quiet with the hum of the waterfall. It was great that it was so quiet. There were maybe 2 dozen species of butterflies, and many species of trees and plants. At the back end of the conservatory, there's a counter with large, informative photos naming all the different butterflies and insects, and their distinctive characteristics. There were also pupa hanging, and staff to answer any questions. There were a couple of seating areas. After I had rounded the sanctuary a couple of times, I decided to sit on one of the rocks near the waterfall and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere. I then decided to check out the snack bar/cafe. The offerings included some lunch items and baked goods in addition to the usual beverage selections. One thing I encountered that is one of my pet peeves, is a place that charges full 13% HST on takeout food that's $4 or less. I brought it up to the staff and asked that they enlighten their management on how that works. This isn't some mom and pop corner store and they really should know better. Anyway the cafeteria is large and has plenty of seating space, plus a big patio area out in the back with acres of greenery to look at. There are also some swings and space for children to enjoy some fresh air outside. Last but not least, a visit to the gift shop is mandatory. They had tons and tons of preserved butterflies in frames. They also had a good selection of books and gift items. I liked that they were not the generic same old, same old you often see in other attractions' gift shops. I purchased a couple of things I will use as gifts in the future, and be happy that I won't have to worry they'll already have it or get it from someone else. I would love to revisit in future, and bring a friend with her young child. It's the absolute perfect place to spend a day or afternoon getting some light exercise, enjoying a slice of nature, and recharging your battery.

Absolutely love this place. Thousands of beautiful butterflies in the main rainforest type room,…read moretwo other bug rooms, plus a cafe. Got an annual membership with my family a couple of times now (you can use your admission fee towards the price).

So if you are thinking of booking your child's next Birthday at Bingemans FunworX Indoor Playland…read moreread this first.. -we waited 15 mins on arrival to meet a party planner and figure out the process - preordered hotdogs for 10 kids but there is no ketchup in the room. Mentioned this to the party planner. Waited almost 10 minutes and finally just went into another party room and grabbed theirs - no water for the boys - we had to ask for the birthday cake. It wasn't in the room and no party planner around. Waited as a result. - got 8 (not 10 preloaded cards - short two) - none worked. - service manager was poor in addressing this issue. Made us "prove" they didn't work and then took 10 minutes to do new cards while the boys waited around - she asked me to collect the old cards and bring them all up to her. - the 10 new cards then didn't work again! Her fix was the same 10 minute process for new cards again. Half an hour wasted of a 2.5 hour party with 10 boys all saying "this sucks" for our sons birthday! - no solution offered. We had to say "at least let them go in the climbing area instead of sitting around waiting on these errors. She agreed but they all had to go upstairs to get bracelets. Good customer service would have been bringing them over to us as a peace offering with an explanation about the cards, again we are in charge of rounding everyone up to go into a gated area, but we don't have cards that work so we have to lift each 9 year old child over the gate. - eventually we received 10 new cards (3rd times a charm) but had less then 10 mins to use them as the boys had to be rounded up and off to bowling. - party planner still didn't know who the birthday boy was until we went into the bowling 1 hour and 15 minutes after party had started. - no shoes at Funworkx - had to truck over to Boston Pizza counter to get fitted and then back to bowling. - finally bowling was decent but after all this only had about 45 mins. And lastly after saying we needed to speak with the manager we were told she was too busy for us, and to call her another time!?!
