When you stare at the computer monitor for most of your workday, you need to take a time out, go for a stroll and transport your spirit. Sometimes, I rove about in this mecca of downtown bars, cafés, restaurants, boutiques and end up here at Fullerton Downtown Plaza. The emptiness and quietude is what willingly draws me close. There isn't much to this strip other than a small museum, a couple of churches, a parking structure, a park and a pavilion area with some benches. At different moments of the day, you might find students, workers, transients, soccer mommies, nannies, pet walkers, artists, skaters, smokers or photographers passing through here. It's one of the more mellow sides of DTF; a place in the middle of it all where you can either take a breather or just use as a bridge to somewhere else (keep in mind, not literally a bridge).

I've been to Roman Cucina many times, and there's so much about this spot that keeps me coming…read moreback. Located in the middle of downtown Fullerton, it's a charming and cozy space that's perfect for a date night or celebration. Come early, or plan to walk around a bit because they are walk up only, and your wait could be a while depending on where you want to be sat. Still, it's worth it for the great atmosphere and delicious pasta. Certain days of the week have different specials. For example, Thursdays they have discounted martinis (they have some GREAT drinks), and Wednesdays discounted wine bottles (and no corkage fees if your whole party orders an entree) so definitely make sure to check out if they're offering anything the day you come in. They have a pretty large menu of pasta dishes, and other entrees. Everything I've had off the menu has been delicious, including the special pasta of the day I ordered on my last visit. Plates range from $20 and up if you add proteins, but the portions are large and you definitely won't leave hungry. The service is very solid, but our last server Jessica really wowed us! She was personable, and had many great recommendations about the menu. Aside from checking in on us frequently and making sure our wine glasses were never empty, she really made our recent visit a standout one. Definitely stop by here if you're looking for a nice Italian dinner in Fullerton.

Our family spotted this place and its stellar Yelp reviews and reeeeeally wanted to love it, but…read morethe prices were high -- even in a post-COVID world where everything is expensive -- they're charging a whopping $15 for a (meatless) dinner salad, a bowl of romaine with a forgettable house dressing. Come ON. Also, we all ordered different entrees (we're vegetarian) and all of them across the board were bland and average. Like they'd cracked a jar of Ragu, poured it over pasta, and expected us to be happy. Fun ambiance, but not enough to lure us back. Food was expensive and just meh. We don't recommend this place.

The Fullerton Rutas has been a staple for my sister and I for close to six years, we come in at…read moreleast twice a month and absolutely love it. The vibes are artsy, chill, and very laid back, and while we have our regular spots there are no bad seats. Staff are always friendly here, and even though it's seat yourself and menus are on the table for you to take your time with, they're always checking in and willing to answer questions. Elizabeth has been our server on multiple occasions and is always attentive and quick to help or communicate, and always says hi even if she isn't the one working with us directly. Dinner rush is usually a bit earlier in the evening as they do see a lot of older clientele, but it typically varies based on weekday vs weekend and if there's a local event happening in downtown Fullerton. The patio is large with plentiful seating, a warm fireplace, dogs are allowed, and if there's live music happening at the museum down the street you can usually hear it. Our favorites are the nachos, killer chili, Leeky soup, and any of their salads. Price is a good value, especially considering the portion size, we can usually get at least two meals out of an entree. We love trying the new dollar dip flavor every month. Cookies are made in-house and very good, an easy and affordable treat to grab on the way out. We've brought vegan and vegetarian friends here and they can always find something to eat. Highly recommend as a place to come to when you want to sit and hang out for a bit to relax and have a good meal, whether alone or with a group.

If you step through the doorway and your first thought is, gosh, there must be a college campus…read morearound here, you'd be right. Rutabegorz (pronounced like the vegetable: "ROO-tah-BAY-gorz") is a short protest march away from Cal-State Fullerton as well as Fullerton Community College here in Southern California, and is across the street from an Anglican church that looks like an old Sixties, social justice kind of house of worship. The place is actually kind of hard to find, since from the outside it looks like any other ivy-covered brick building that houses the bookstores and headshops that cling, lamprey-like, to institutions of higher learning. Inside, the décor is a funky hodge-podge, not in the calculated way that a place like TGI-Friday's is crafted, but the way you'd imagine post-hippie entrepreneurs would decorate their restaurant labor-of-love. That introduction should prepare you for the food, which is as anti-corporate as you'd imagine from the place's looks. The vegetarian dishes are numerous and hearty the way you'd expect vegetarian dishes wouldn't be, somehow filling and richly satisfying. The ratatouille is savory, the vegetarian burrito bean-y and substantial, the falafel wrap is a little dry but will sit in the pit of your stomach in a satisfying way. The hummus is a lumpy, almost cottage cheese-like interpretation of the dish which could use a little more flavor but isn't bad. The food tastes homemade, the vegetables as though they were actually, at one point in their existences, raw. The meals are as nourishing physically as a Marilynne Robinson novel is spiritually. For those who are worried, the restaurant isn't exclusively vegetarian, and although I haven't had a bunch of the meat dishes, what I have had has continued on the theme of minimally processed foods. The-Walnut-That-Kissed-The-Chicken is a nice take on the chicken salad sandwich, spread thick between two slabs of squaw bread that make it as much a mouthful to eat as it is to say, and the chicken tastes like it was actually boiled and then chopped by hand. We still live in a society driven by consumption, not even the peacenik greenie-types are unaffected, and you can tell by the size of the portions - you invariably have to take some home. Salads come in gigantic blue plastic basins that look as though the cook in the back thought about looking for a proper serving bowl and then just decided, aw to heck with it, I'll just serve the entire thing in the tub I tossed it in. Be sure to get a dessert anyway - the cheesecake is the sweet, tart, dense kind of thing that makes gaining talk-show kind of weight easy. The place also has a decent list of beers. I haven't tried the wines or the cocktails. I've been coming here on and off for a little over a quarter of a century now, I've seen all sorts of people sitting at the rickety wooden tables, from the Birkenstock crowd to sorority girls to Korean club-kids - wholesome food in giant portions appeals across sociopolitical lines.

We ordered the 22" Supreme and BBQ for pick-up and that thin crust was GOOD good. Crispy, flavorful, and dangerously easy to keep eating even when you're already full The Supreme was definitely the winner for us -- super flavorful, nicely seasoned, and just hit the spot. The BBQ was still tasty, though we wished it had a little more meat on it. But being spoiled by all the Amazing pizza spots in LA (Ciao Masa!) probably raised my expectations a bit too high for OC pizza - Apples and oranges -- both good, just different. Overall, really solid pizza and definitely ordering again!

Every university has its quirky superstitions…read more The Fallen David, located east of Pollak Library and north of the Education classroom building, is a broken marble copy of Michelangelo's David which was destroyed during an '87 quake and given to the university by Forest Lawn cemetery. The artistic message in placing it on campus seems to be that everything is impermanent. Each piece is supposedly strategically placed with his groin facing down, rear-end up in the air. Supposedly there's a local superstition that students receive good luck on tests rubbing a butt piece clockwise or counterclockwise, but truthfully I think the only people spreading this notion are campus tour guides. Still it's funny walking by on your way to class and see some hipsters having a drum circle or reading while sitting on that supposedly lucky piece.

It is beyond me why such a nice statue has not been repaired as of yet. In fact, if this statue does possess such a power, then certainly it would very much appreciate being repaired and thus give you even better results on your exams as a way of thanking you for fixing it up. So come on you guys. Fix that statue and make your campus look its best!

I love the city of Fullerton!…read more I'm a new resident here. Prior to that, I would always go to downtown Fullerton for the fun festivities! Downtown Fullerton offers lots of eateries, shopping and things to do. It seems like there is a strong sense of community here. Most people seem nice and friendly. Sure, there are some that aren't. You will find that anywhere though. The parking situation is a nightmare at downtown. You can never find parking. I have noticed many of the roads and sidewalks need to be repaired. It seems like the city is older and could be maintained better. I do like the splashes of architecture you will find throughout Fullerton. It's a pretty city.

It's really disheartening to see such poor professionalism and lack of knowledge from these guys. The inspector failed me the first time because he claimed he didn't see proof of the sheathing inspection for my roof, even though everything is available online. It just doesn't make any sense. I had to go in person to try and clear things up, but instead, they just rescheduled the inspection again. Then the inspector showed up a week later. Luckily, I got there before he left because he was already preparing a note saying I failed the inspection again. I caught him on it and questioned him, and to make a long story short, he kept trying to fail me without any valid reason. In the end, he had no choice but to sign off and pass the inspection. The inspector's name is Noah, and he's the supervisor. I'm not sure what his problem was, but as a supervisor, he definitely needs more training and professionalism. It's disappointing and honestly a waste of time dealing with this kind of behavior when I'm just trying to get things done right.

I appreciate its cleanliness inside (tables, furniture, bathrooms) and easy parking (more people need to use the public parking structure that's literally a 1-2 minute walk). It's Thursday, and I was looking for a last minute reservation for lunch time, on MOTHER'S DAY. After calling literally 15+ establishments, I was so happy to snag a reservation here! Sunday arrives, and we are already running late. I called and spoke to the hostess, and nervously told them we'd be 15 minutes late. I was terrified the reservation would be forfeited. The hostess was very empathetic, told us to drive safe, and that our table will be ready when we arrive. This definitely helped with my stress. We arrive and after checking in we are seated immediately. Our waitress, Olivia, was absolutely amazing! She greeted us with a big smile and was incredibly attentive to our party. She took our drink order, shared the specials, and gave us time to decide on what we wanted. It's common at other restaurants that when you tell the waiter you are not ready, they do not return for a L-O-N-G time. Olivia did not do this. She continued to check on us and did not come off impatient. My mom, who's never been before and English is not her primary language, had a lot of questions from describing all the salad dressings to different fettuccine. Olivia happily answered everything and got our order underway. Our drinks were always refilled and she never forgot a request, whether it was dressing on the side, straws, or extra napkins & utensils. I wanted to sneakily pay the bill while my family was still enjoying their food, so I went inside. Another girl, Penny, noticed I needed assistance and helped me with my request immediately. Lastly, I really wanted to express how amazing everything went so I asked to speak with a manager. As someone who works in the service industry too, I know all too well that most of the time happily satisfied customers/guests/patrons are more likely to move on with their day while disappointed people are the ones to complain. Within a few minutes I met Ashley, one of the managers, and was able to share that this was probably one of the best Mother's Day outings we have ever had, all thanks to Old Spaghetti Factory. On our way home, my mom was already brainstorming when to return.

My wife and I loved it so much while dating that we had our wedding rehearsal dinner here in 1991. We haven't been back for quite a while so we thought we'd eat there for the sake of of nostalgia. What a disappointment! We went early evening so it wasn't crowded. We were seated immediately but then had to wait so long for a server that we had to summons a hostess to get one. It took a long while to get everything. When we were finally served, he bread was good, the salad was not, and the spaghetti I had was below par at best-- not very hot and super low on meat sauce and mizithra cheese (shrinkflation?). The tiny chicken parmesan that my wife had, however, was the worst we've ever tasted anywhere by far. We wanted to get our bill, but again we had to wait forever for the server to give us our check so we can go back and relieve the caregiver for our disabled son. The price overall was basically in line with what you would pay everywhere else nowadays, but the quality and service was so poor we will not return... and that's a real shame.
