I will give you both sides and you can decide whether or not you want to work with him. I am a singer-songwriter who brought music files to Steve to edit. Once we got the instrumental tracks smooth and in sync, we recorded my vocals. His equipment was superb, much of it made by him to exacting specifications. And, from what I have learned about microphones--including how I sound after using several different ones--I think that the custom one he built was first-rate for my voice. Don't, however, expect a professional atmosphere. Steve records in the living room of his house; and during the time I was there, we had to work around a young baby and a dog. If it's summer, he turns off the air conditioning (because the compressor makes noise); so if you record during the summer months be prepared to sweat. A lot. The best part of the experience was learning how to edit my vocal tracks with ProTools. Steve encouraged me to get the artist's version so I could do the editing at my home, saving money and getting the vocals exactly the way I wanted them. He was generous with his time teaching me how to use the program to edit vocals, and I will always appreciate this. If you're waiting for the major "but," here it is. Most of the problems arose around the mix. It took Steve four months to give me ten songs. He procrastinated, rarely communicated in a timely manner, and in fact acted annoyed that I would even dare to call him to ask about the status of the project. In retrospect, I could tell he really didn't want to mix the album. He should have told me this straight out, instead of leaving me hanging. After four months and about twenty-four hundred dollars poorer (of course my money was not refunded), I was less than happy with the mixes. I brought the files elsewhere whose engineer--who had much more experience with my style of music and also teaches recording at a university--immediately made the piano and guitar sound better. In a few hours, this other engineer did better than Steve had in four months. One major problem was the condition of the files. Somehow Steve had combined time changes (which I had requested) with unwanted key changes. He didn't label the files so you knew what they were. And instead of one instrumental line or one vocal line, various portions of files were in pieces all over the place. The other engineer had to spend extra time getting the files in shape (and, rightly so, charged me for it). One song was ruined to such an extent that I was unable to use the guitar track (which I had already paid for). I had to record other instruments for this song all over again, as well as the vocals which had been recorded too "hot" and were not useable as there was distortion. I have no doubt that Steve is gifted (he spent a fair amount of time telling me that he was, and I did see at least one award he earned). However, he's probably much better doing work solo, such as soundtracks that other studios send him for absolute final revisions. Steve had given me a price break because I was doing an entire album; but there was always the caveat that he'd cancel my session to do work on, say, a movie soundtrack that brought him a much higher fee. Ultimately, considering the money I threw away for a mix I couldn't use, and the extra money I had to pay the new engineer to get my files in workable shape, I probably didn't end up saving a whole lot. If you're a singer-songwriter and not a major studio (which pays Steve a lot more), you should probably look elsewhere. I found Brick Road Studio much more suited to my needs.

Prophet broke everything down in a way that was approachable for beginners while still giving us insight into professional techniques. We started with the fundamentals -- setting up a proper layout in Pro Tools -- and gradually worked our way toward more advanced concepts like creating mix buses for melodies, drums, and vocals. I really appreciated how he connected each step to real-world workflows, so you could see how it would apply in an actual studio session. What stood out most was Prophet's ability to make technical concepts feel simple and actionable. He kept the pace steady, encouraged questions, and made sure everyone understood before moving forward. It never felt rushed, and every section built logically on the last, so by the end, you had a complete picture of how a track comes together. In the future, it would be great to see even more hands-on opportunities and perhaps the chance to collaborate with artists directly -- which would make the learning experience even richer. Overall, the course was a wonderful experience that I'd recommend to anyone wanting to get started with Pro Tools or improve their production skills. Lost Oasis Records has created a great learning environment, and Prophet is a fantastic instructor who genuinely wants his students to succeed.
