Any chance I can give more than 5 Stars??? Because THIS place was a GEM One of the best sushi & Japanese restaurants I've been to and I've been to many. What I liked about it the most was the authenticity and the at home local feel of it. Even though we do not live in Midland we will definitely go here every time we go through to head Up North. Hibachi Shrimp was my favorite! Some of the tastiest shrimp with homemade spicy mayo style sauce, side of moist brown rice and vegetables perfectly cooked with delicious brown sauce. Our WONDERFUL waiter, VINCE was quick to rattle of his favorite rolls too which included Spicy Hawaiian, divine!!! I could have eaten 2 of those they were that good! My family also ordered the Hibachi Chicken, Lobster, and Steak and Clear Soup (very good). My father ordered the tempura and said it was excellent. Our waiter was patient allowing us to stay a few min after closing too, to take a family Polaroid picture that went on their picture wall. Let's start with their unimpressive, unwelcoming awful exterior: opaque windows with a few flyers taped up. The interior decor is underwhelming and without much effort but tidy enough. I was "welcomed" in by a sullen, surly "host" without any sort of greeting, and who led me to a table, tossed the menu on it without stopping and walked away with nary a word. I was then asked by the server what I wanted to drink before I even sat down or had my coat off. My order consisted of a salad of only iceberg lettuce with half a pound of dressing glooped on top. This is a really great place for sushi. It's located in a plaza and there's plenty of parking. The restaurant inside is clean and service is fast. The sushi always tastes fresh. Miso soup and edamame (not pictured) were really good. We got the Atlantic, California, Michigan, sweet potato, and crystal rolls. My wife and had dinner here recently and we were extremely impressed. The restaurant has a unique ambiance, but a very nice one. It has small table, small booths, and a bar where you can see the sushi being made. We were extremely impressed with the quality of the sushi, and I thought the prices were very reasonable. Found this place on yelp and gave it a try. It was I a strip mall. Very clean, and staff welcoming. As a matter of fact the staff never stop checking on you to make sure your are enjoying your dining experience. Had seafood soup, massive portion but was a bit bland. Went for the chef special sushi platter and it was excellent for the price. May not be my 5 star sushi, but the price quality ration are excellent, not to mention the great service. 2017-12-03. After checking out from Soaring Eagle and needing to head east, we had many places we could have went to for dinner. But we ended up stopping by Chippewassee Park on our way through Midland to let the kids play. I figured the more energy I let them expend now, the calmer they'll be for the ride home. Before I knew it, dinner time crept in and I found myself looking for a place for dinner. Kids wanted sushi, so it was 50/50 as Midland only had two places; Maru and Fuji. A quick yelp check for pictures and I decided to go with Fuji. Located right by Midland Mall, the place was quite small and the lighting was low. With seating for about 30 in a combination of tables and booths. We perused the menu and decided on the Love Boat for 4 as the prices for individual selections are insanely high. They rival those of major metropolitan areas like NY, LA, & TO! The Love Boat came with two special rolls and two regular rolls. We ordered the Sakura Roll and the Tiger Roll. I would have liked to try the House Roll as well as the Soft Shell Crab appetizer, but didn't want to overdo it with the food this time around. The Sushi. 15 pieces, no choice. Salmon, Tuna, what looked like Sea Bass, and Butterfish (aka white tuna even though it's not). The pieces were made with proper proportioning of rice to fish. The thickness of the fish was also nicely done; evenly cut and consistent with each piece 3/16" - 1/4" thick. Each piece covered the rice completely. The only miss was the lack of wasabi between the fish and the rice, but I will overlook this as I know they're only catering to their customers who may not be able to handle the wasabi (very, very few places will include the wasabi). Execution 5 stars, chef selection 4 stars (I'm not a fan of butterfish). The Sashimi. 20 pieces, no choice. Salmon, Red Tuna, Sea Bass, Yellow Tail, Butterfish, and a lone shrimp. A couple of disappointments here. 1st, the shrimp was not the freshwater sweet shrimp (amaebi); 2nd, I got more butterfish! Again, thickness was executed well. The pieces are smaller in length than the sushi, but they are made up for by being thicker, consistently and evenly cut about 1/4" - 5/8". Execution 5 stars, selection 4 stars (that damn butterfish!). If they would let customers select their choice of fish for the sushi/sashimi, the place would be a flying 5-star rating in my books (but to be fair, I didn't ask if I could choose... I'll definitely do that next time if I'm ever in the area again). Sakura Roll. Spicy Tuna, avocado roll topped with fake crab meat, a spicy mayo, and tempura flakes. Nicely done with the ratios here. Unfortunately there really wasn't much surprise to the roll, it tasted as expected. 3,5 stars. Tiger Roll. Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, topped with eel sauce and tempura flakes. Like the Sakura roll, nicely done with the ratios. But also like the Sakura roll, no surprises here either. 3,5 stars. Tekka Maki (tuna roll) & Cucumber and Crab Roll. These are what I call simple rolls, or kids rolls. Really basic stuff to introduce people to sushi. Ingredient wise, you get everything you do in sushi, it's just presented differently and in different ratios. You get much more rice than fish, and you get more nori (seaweed) so that it's easier to handle. The bite size pieces ensures that it's all in the mouth in one fell swoop and minimizes any negative visuals you can get from taking bites. There's really nothing to rate here... Overall, the ratios at Fuji are spot on IMO. They don't try to make these massive rolls and give the perception of value. Instead they keep to conventional ratios of fish, to veggies, to rice. Sure they look really small, but they taste much better. The fish on the sushi covers the rice completely with a nice drape as it should, and the Sashimi is cut consistently; slightly thicker than their sushi counterpart. Fuji also does a decent job with their own creations of their rolls, and while I'm not a fan of rolls and maki in general, they had some combinations that interested me. I would say the Fuji is a 5 star place for sushi/sashimi, but only a 4 star place for their rolls. Presentation is nice and clean. The luminescence they add to their plates is a nice warm touch. Their selection for appetizers, and cooked items seem on par to set them up with an overall 4 stars. Reviews are highly subjective as well as relative, in this case, relative would reference it's competitors. In Midland, that would mean only one other place; and while I've not tried their only competitor in town, I'm confident that the sushi and sashimi is as good as it gets for the Midland area. So I'm giving Fuji the honorary 5 star rating for Midland, my 15th such accreditation. Congratulations Fuji! From a big city in the West Coast, just visiting and this is my first time trying sushi in the mid-west. Usually, most sushi places in the West Coast have fresh fish due to being next to the ocean and plenty of fish supermarkets of course. However, this place also have the fresh fish as well.
