A gem. Exceptional quality and even better service. I quietly spent a birthday here and without…read moreeven knowing the staff steered me towards one of the best dining experiences of the last few years. I sat at the bar and the meal and beverage selections made by the staff were incredible.

They have a nice patio area, but it's hard to comfortably seat more than 4 people out there. The interior has a nice view into the kitchen and lots of natural light. For wine, they had a blaufrankish on the menu, which was a nice surprise. The house bread is a country loaf that had a good crust and a nice softer / chewy center. They had a lunch special - a la carte or as a meal (with dessert and a salad). The meal is definitely a better deal - NOK180 a la carte vs NOK250 for the whole meal. We tried the bolinius (salt cod fritters) with pea purée and a cauliflower couscous, both of which were unique/good. Sandwiches are all open faced, served on rye with a slather of aioli. You can get 2 for NOK180 or 3 for NOK240. - Steak: topped with an onion ring; the meat texture was a little tough - Beef tartare: fresh, but a little under salted - Shrimp with egg: the yolk was still nice and runny - Fried cod: nicely fried Food took a little longer than expected (it was fairly empty at lunch), but everything was pretty solid. Service was helpful, friendly, and unpretentious.

We walked into firelake, quite frankly, with little to no expectations. We were looking for…read moresustenance after a long day of hiking to pulpit rock. Weary but happy, we dragged our exhausted selves to the lobby restaurant of the radisson blu Atlantic, where we were staying. We were seated immediately by the friendly maitre d. Our waiter for the evening, Martin could not have been nicer. He took our orders of a burger, mussels and chicken tenders for our daughter. They all tasted great! My favorite, however, was the complimentary bread basket, with the most delicious, soft bread with sun-dried tomatoes, a side of soft butter in olive oil and a sprinkling of sea salt and chili flakes. He also gave us a complimentary amuse bouche - salmon on a cucumber with crema and roe. Again, delicious and refreshing. The mussels came in a green curry sauce with a julienned veggies and Thai red chilis. The fries on the side were crisped to perfection as was the spicy mayo it came with. They have an extensive wine selection. As a New Yorker, I value a good wine bar scene with ambience but the prices here/ Norway are no joke. I went for a French red which was the cheapest at 200nok/ 20usd. To top it all off, Martin went the extra mile to give my daughter a vanilla ice cream, made in house. The service cannot be faulted. All to say, I can't recommend firelake enough!

I ordered the cheeseburger both times (I was missing good ol Americana from back home) because it was perfectly executed: cooked to perfection, delicious condiments, and fresh ingredients. It was definitely one of the better burgers I have had in recent memory. Recommend if you are a meat-eater and looking for a place that knows how to prepare, season, and cook red meat to perfection!
