So I was under the impression that this was a fish market. I love visiting fish markets because I LOVE seafood and I love stalled markets. Visiting a market to me is being on vacation. We were at a fish market in a different Norwegian city during this trip, so I had high hopes. This isn't a straight fish market in my opinion, it's basically a restaurant and a fish counter. It is a permanent structure and alone on this side of the harbor so it's very easy to find. The restaurant wasn't very busy when we were there and we didn't eat at it either. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The seafood counter was pretty much like a supermarket counter. It was much smaller than I expected it to be. The area for the shop was also very tight and unwelcoming. There were limited items and again, half of the stuff was imported and not Norwegian. I thought the service wasn't that good, we were completely ignore. So we ended up just leaving without anything. read more

Indoor and outdoor seating option. Indoor had nicer furniture, but the outside has a nice view especially during sunset. I was fortunate to get a table for the dropping in line and didn't wait more than 15 minutes. This establishment is a fish market as well as a restaurant. Moderate prices for this region And super fresh. I had the links fish fillet with a Bernaise sauce and king crab. Ironically, the starter cost more than the entrée. I'm giving it the highest review because of the freshness and the laid back dining experience. My bill came out to 100 US without drinks. Icy icy icy!!! The restaurant did not want our business and limited our stay to one hour and seated us in an empty room next to the restroom. My friend was wearing a t shirt that screamed 'Merican" unfortunately and wow, they really made it clear we were not welcome. The mussels and fish soup were delicious. The airBnB host recommended this place, we showed up, the host (Marcus) asked if we had reservations - we didn't. He was able to seat us anyway, even though it was only 1.5hrs before they would stop serving lunch. We tried their famous fish soup - liked it. Their selection of bread is amazing, especially the dark brown with nuts and seeds one. We had the catch of the day and risotto with peas and baby shrimp. Now I don't normally like tiny shrimp but it was good. All the food items were seasoned well, flavors were married together in an tantalizing fashion. Place felt exquisite and food scrumptious. We retuned the next day for dinner and it was the opposite of the day before. If you don't have a reservation - they can still accomodate you in the outside seating. Good: outside seating has individual blankets placed on chairs ample amount of heaters are available Bads: Different menu than inside does't seem to have the Fisketorget flair On this day we got spicy salmon salad and mussels - both were mediocre at best. Fisketorget is the real deal fish place by the harbor in Stavanger. Most of the rest of the harbor is drinking places for Norwegians. They don't want Norwegian food. They want beer, wine, hamburgers, tacos and pizza. Actually, they want beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, wine, hamburgers, tacos and pizza. If Chili's opened up a branch on the harbor, They would make ten million kroner in their first week. And food would represent only 5% of their take. * * * Fisketorget is another kettle of fish altogether. They have beer and wine and aquavit and all the rest. But they are really about the seafood pure and simple. The menu is limited. A large percentage of it is straight up fruits de mer, ungarnished shellfish fresh out of the ocean. The rest of the small menu consists of chef prepared seafood dishes. BIG. THUMBS. UP. My wife had the grand slam home run. Lingfish in a cabbage sauce (yes, cabbage sauce) with cauliflower, watercress and root vegetables. The lingfish itself was an extraordinary piece of fresh fish. The cook put a magnificent char on the fish that was die-and-go-to-heaven. The cabbage sauce was a mild thin sauce to add just a soupcon of green taste to the proceedings. It bridged the flavors of the root vegetables and the fish. Fine fine fine fine eating. I had a more orthodox mussels with green curry and fresh coriander. They brought me practically a full fisherman's net full of mussels. Seriously the serving was about twice the size of what we see in the United States. The sauce was all on the bottom covered up by the fisherman's net full of mussels. So at first I thought I was getting my mussels straight up and steamed. These were good mussels, well prepared and I was happy to have them. Finally, at the eighty percent mark, I found the sauce that was hiding underneath. This was like a date that you start with just a drink, then you go to dinner, then you go back to her place for etc. etc. The last part was definitely the best part, but the warm-ups were pretty nice too. That green curry coriander sauce was the last part which was the best part, but the warm-ups were pretty nice too. * * * I haven't had all the burgers and pizza at harbor side. So I can't really tell you what the best and the worst places are. But all indications are that Fisketorget towers over the competing establishments like Arnold Schwartzenegger towers over the Lilliputians. The food here is actually excellent. The bread basket includes three varieties to eat with some kind of delicious aioli. It's a bit salty but very tasty nonetheless. The service here, however, is lacking. While the waitstaff is friendly, the consensus is that every table has a complaint. The lady next to us is still waiting for her main dish after quite a long time. I see diners from different tables get up to tell the staff that they need water/bread/menu/food/check. It's really ridiculous actually. My rec is to come for the food but come with patience. read more

This place is awesome! They have a set menu, and you can pick which items you want. They also have fresh seafood to be served on ice. I ordered a fish soup because according to TripAdvisor, that's what everyone gets. I also got their first starter of the day, smoked cod. There was complimentary bread as well, sourdough and wheat. Both were really soft and fresh, but I personally enjoyed the sourdough more. My fish soup was amazing! Best soup I've ever had. It was really creamy but light and full of flavor at the same time. There was plenty of fish, and different kinds of fish at that. The soup also had croutons on the top and this sort of oil that made of more flavorful. It was so good, and I've never had anything quite like it. The smoked cod was full of flavor too, but it as slightly too salty. It was plated really nicely, and it came with a quail egg too. The quail egg was cooked to perfection; the inside was still runny and it was delicious. There was also some thick yellow sauce I think made from the yolk, and there was another dark red quite thick sauce made I think from beets. The yolk sauce was really salty, but the red sauce balanced out the flavors. Quite delicious too. The meal cost a hefty amount though; I would definitely not come here often if I lived here. Together, the dishes added up to 328 NOK, the fish soup being 159 and the smoked cod being 169. Wow! Amazing meal though. Right when I tasted the fish soup, I decided that it was probably going to be the best thing I ate on my trip. read more

A word to the wise: this place, on the whole, is definitely touristy, but still worth it. Bergen is probably the most touristy part of Norway in general, so this is to be expected. This was a delicious dinner we enjoyed while in Stavanger. We snatched an outdoor table to enjoy the views of the harbor. The indoor and outdoor menus are different, so be sure to note that when looking at the menu posted at the restaurant. Stavanger prices are pretty steep (as a tourist from the states), but we thought our meal of mussels (large portion), a shrimp sandwich and a glass of wine was reasonable in Stavanger standards. The freshest and most delicious mussels ever! You can image they were just out of the ocean. Boiled with a light sauce and lots of cilantro and shredded carrots. Just the perfect seasoning to bring out the best of the mussel. The portion is decent, if not too generous in my opinion. Very reasonable price as well. More like 4.5 stars. Properly prepared fish with the correct accompanying vegetables (see my review of Egon across the street). Lovely wine. Not only does the menu clearly show which dishes have gluten, but the server was very helpful in explaining why. My husband had the steamed mussels with green curry which was delightfully light and bright. The julienned carrots and green veggies were a nice touch. He wished for a bit of rice to soak up the rest of the broth when he was done with the shellfish. About my only complaint was the challenge of getting the server's attention to get our check.
