I had not yet had a burger in Norway and figured as it was my last night, why not get one? He seemed to love his meal. Me? Not so much. I guess they use frozen burger patties (our server had to come and tell us that there was a delay as they had to thaw one in order to make mine-I would not have ordered it, had I known). It had an odd flavor and texture. The hamburger roll was a bit dry. The fries were perfect and they gave me a tasty cheese to dip with to apologize for the delayed meal. Service was excellent. The restaurant is beautiful. Maybe if I was to go again, choosing a different option would offer a better meal.

One tip if you stay at Gamle Vaerket - get a room that has a window to the "outside" - ie: real nighttime air. We didn't have A/C in our room and it was one of the rooms with a window opening to the inside of the hotel. Those windows can let in hotel/bar noise, but they don't cool the room down much. We still liked our room, and they had fans which helped keep it somewhat cool. (Note - their web site lists air conditioning as a feature - either #201's A/C was busted or they are generous with their definition. The outside hallway was cool, so somewhere there was air conditioning, but our room tended towards stuffy and we didn't see an obvious way to cool the room other than the two fans. I'd book one of the outside facing rooms just to be sure.) Breakfast and wifi was included. The breakfast buffet was good, including a fair variety of basics with a few regional flavors for the locals or the adventurous (herring and brown cheese, for example).

As many of the New Nordic formats, they start you in the Orangeriet for snacks and aperitif. Then you move inside for the main courses and dessert. You then come full circle for the petit fours, caffeine and after dinner spirits back in the orangeriet. Only the beat local producers are highlighted on the menu. It was great to see some of the great ingredients the locale of Stavanger had to offer and with seafood being simply amazing. If I have to say what are the most memorable moments during my recent trip to Norway, I must say…read morethat this hotel/restaurant offered the most satisfying accommodation and best gastronomy experience on my 2-1/2-week trip in Norway. Its rooms are not luxurious but comfortable and so close to nature with modern convenience. We woke up early in the morning and enjoyed the beautiful mountain scenery surrounding our cabins, in addition to enjoying some wonderful moments with their resident goats. Both the dinner and breakfast were excellent, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The best is its refreshing drinking water which comes from their own well! I look forward to staying here again if I visit Stavanger area again!

Post hike to Mån and Månafossen, this is a well known local and famous Norwegian Inn, Gift Shop,…read moreand Restaurant. It does not disappoint in any of its offerings. I'll start with the gift shop. It's not to be missed. The gift shop is enormous. Upon entering, you see Norwegian and other European teas, coffees, candies, chocolates, etc. As you walk in further, you see where they make candles. You will then find a large array of beautiful handmade in-house candles of every type and color. Some are of animals (the owls were my favorite) and lovely tapers and other decorative candles. I was surprised to see they had Yankee candles towards the back of the room as well, seeing as their decorative handmade candles are far superior (even if unscented). There's a section where you buy tapers and then kids can dip their own tapers in different wax colors. You'll also find as well as beautiful hand carved and honed wooden cheeseboards and cutting boards, with cheese slicers and knives ranging from high end to more affordable to suit everyone's needs. There are typical tourist items such as magnets, troll figurines, postcards, etc. As you continue into the back, there is an amazing, well lit "cave-like" room of "stone" that has affordable and attractive jewelry made with semiprecious gemstones such as tiger eye, peridot, amethyst, rose quartz. There are also animal figurines made from quartz, as well as numerous types of uncut semi-precious gemstones and quartz that you can buy. I bought a lovely tiger eye bracelet for roughly $10US. The room also has a classic old car, several beautiful wooden carved chairs to take pictures with that are depictions of trolls and giants. There are large piles of high quality sheepskins, reindeer skins, etc. Scandinavians like to put these on leather and other furniture to keep you warm in winter and to protect the furniture. It has a large Christmas (Jul) section upstairs as well as a nice selection of Norwegian Hiking/Winter Jackets, socks, tourist t-shirts. I ended up buying a high quality, waterproof yet breathable Nordic Ski Jacket for around $60US on sale. It has the Norwegian Flag on the sleeve, which is pretty cool. It's going to be great this winter as I needed a new XC ski jacket. The restaurant: It's gorgeous. I can imagine it seems very inviting and cozy in winter with its candlelit, dark wood tables. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. I ordered the poached trout which was served with a side of dill cream sauce, buttery potatoes, salad of carrots and also coleslaw. The fish and potatoes were very good; I had never had orange trout before. It reminded me a bit of salmon. My friends got a traditional meatball dinner and a lamb shank dinner. I have to admit, that lamb shank looked and smelled amazing and disappeared quickly off the fork. I would definitely order that if I were to come again. The meatballs, stewed peas, potatoes were served with traditional brown sauce and lingonberry jam. That too was consumed with gusto (what do you expect after hike?) and my Norwegian friends said that the dish was accurate in its flavors. Pastries were had a dessert. I found them a bit too dry for me, but as I rarely eat pastries, I just had a bite. Behind and above the restaurant are lovely traditional hotel rooms. There is also a small viking replica village with goats and other animals (only goats were present while we were there). There are also a couple more large wooden carved statues and chairs to get your picture taken with. With the lovely mountain view in the background, it's a truly spectacular location.

Very solid pork chop with sauerkraut type cabbage, traditional meatballs, and a potato dumpling that is fried with sausage. having an ikea nearby is always convenient. of course there's a whole range of quality within the…read moreikea brand so i can't say i love everything they sell in that sense. there's also a range of styles to chose from although most of it is the contemporary scandinavian design concept available in more affordable prices. apart from furnitures, i like the ikea bedding as well as other household things like certain kitchen/serving items. the ikea restaurant is decent and has a lot of seating. very family friendly. tried the falafel and couscous the other day and for ikea food, it wasn't too bad. the falafels are the smallest ones i've seen. very cute. after the cashiers downstairs there's also of course the hot dog stand if you'd rather grab one and go. for 10kr, the soft-serve ice cream is also a nice treat.

Not only is it fun for us to go there, but the prices are great, you can get many home basics along with decorative items! I got everything I needed without going broke. Love it!
